There are a number of books in the Gutenberg collection that are computer generated audiobooks.  Here is one for War of the Worlds.

This is a low gutenberg id number (8976) so this record was probably useful when it was released. But I don't think it makes sense for GITenberg to keep.  A repo for this record was created automatically.

For now, I've done the following to the GITenberg repo:
+ removed the content from the master branch
+ added a .nobook file to tell ebook builders to ignore this repo
+ added a README describing why there is no book
+ put a copy of the content in the pg-mirror branch

I used the .nobook file before when we found a book that wasn't in the public domain.

Does this sound like a good thing to do for all of the computer generated audiobooks? (when we have a way of identifying those repositories)

My first instinct was to respond, “Exactly right.”

On second thought, there may be ereaders that have a way to connect an audiobook and ebook (so that, say, the page advances in the ebook being displayed while the separate audiobook is playing).

So I want to particularly note the two steps:
+ removed the content from the master branch

+ put a copy of the content in the pg-mirror branch

Which would not preclude building such a connection.

Therefore, my question to this group is — are there other potential uses of audiobooks by ebooks that might be blocked by such action? That would be the only reservation I have.

Let me point out that ebooks and audio books in a foreign-language might especially want to be connected only to the corresponding version, because word changes/corrections in the text might be especially confusing if the audio didn't match.

So, "computer generated audiobooks," doesn't mean anything to me in a concrete fashion.  If, however, I click through, I hear the voice of a text-to-speech persona named "Perfect Paul" from a mid 1980s DECtal text-to-speech implementation.

Derived files are rarely a good fit for source version control and files derived using such antiquated tools even less so, but who knows what's best...

And the coup de grace for the computer generated audio files is that there is a (dubious) copyright claim on them:
Audio performance Copyright (C) 2003 by Mike Eschman.

This is an audio eBook created by Mike Eschman.
If we accept the copyright claim at face value, we don't have the right to host them in gitenberg.

I highly doubt the copyrightability of Text-To-Speech generated audiobooks.

I do want to support audiobook integration in anyway we can.
This html5-read-along project syncs up audiobooks and books.
It is one of my very favorite demos online.

But audiobook integration is better served by linking to permanent URIs to Librivox audiobooks IMO.
And linking to Librivox audiobooks is one of the stated goals of Eric's metadata initiative.
