When to use Git and when not to USE GIT

Hello People,
I am a NEW PHP MVC (cakePHP) developer i build small applications...
And i do it alone, should i use git for future team development.


And i have a Zippied copy of CakePHP. inside that i have two projects
1. *_production
2. devapp

how can i create branches of *_production to devapp .......
and then merge the devapp to *_production.

I want to do it all locally do not want to use GitHUB
