कान्तारं परितो ज्वलत्यतिबले दावानले दैवतो
गोमायोर्गहनां गुहां परिपतन् दर्पोद्धुरः केसरी ।
यद्व्यापादयति स्म तं न कृपया तेनैष तस्मिन् वने
सिंहानामभयप्रदोऽहमधुनेत्युत्पुच्छमुद्धावति ।।
kāntāraṃ parito jvalatyatibale dāvānale daivato
gomāyorgahanāṃ guhāṃ paripatan darpoddhuraḥ kesarī |
yadvyāpādayati sma taṃ na kṛpayā tenaiṣa tasmin vane
siṃhānāmabhayaprado'hamadhunetyutpucchamuddhāvati ||
As a strong forest fire raged through the woods, a proud lion fortunately found shelter in the deep hole of a jackal, but out of compassion it did not kill the jackal. However, the jackal runs about the forest, with tail held aloft, proclaiming that it had now become one who could give shelter to lions.
