Is there any way to access other newsgroups such as alt.* newsgroups from
my on-campus Macintosh other than going around GT's NNTP server?

And, no, it's not for any of those alt.sex or alt.binaries groups. I'm
looking for alt.photovoltaics, in particular.

There's lots of services out there, if you're willing to pay a
little. Here's one that I'm familiar with:

There are also alternate news servers that will serve up the alt.*
newsgroups. I don't remember exactly where they are, but a short
seach on the net should bring up a bunch of leads. Then just point
your news reader at them instead of news.gatech.edu and see what
happens.
