I am enjoying the experience of learning OS X, but it's not quite
ready for prime time.

10.1 will be a big relief in Sept., as will Office X.

Campus seems pretty slow to adopt it. Not many references to it in
OIT's stuff.

These things take time. :-)

Please tell me you're just trying to be funny. MacOS 10 is built on
FreeBSD, so it should be pretty stable, but I couldn't find a way to get
out of the GUI and to a shell prompt when I was playing with one.

You need to run the 'Terminal' app. Click the Go menu, choose
Applications. Then open the Utilities folder. You should find Terminal
in there(among a few other geek goodies :) )
