intro and question on msys-perl

Hello,

Just introducing myself.
I'm looking around the SDK to find a small piece to try my hand at. My initial idea was to look into the msys-perl version upgrade.
I'm not a Perl exper by no means, but I usually can find my way around it :)

It seems the original project at SF http://sourceforge.net/projects/mingw/files/MSYS/Extension/perl/ is rather in "zombie" mode, stuck at 5.8.8 perl.
If I were to start, what's your advice: start with that or look at Strawberry Perl (http://strawberryperl.com/) as an alternative?

And in general - any starting points, advice, scorn (please be merciful, though) would be much appreciated.
