Generally, nothing.

The Git-scm web site is for documentation and explanation about Git, and as a convenience will link to various (as best I understand it) convenient distributions. Importantly, for Windows users, it offers a link to the latest Git-for-Windows distribution.

The gitforwindows.org site provides the same download link.

Obviously, you should check the hash values to check if they are in sync.

OK,

Now I see two differences.

The main git-scm website download link, links to a subsection of html on it's own server, making it seems at first like it gets the software from it's own server.

In that subsection of html it finally links towards the github repository of git-for-windows proving that it indeed links to this software.

It also supplies an automatic download, not sure where that comes from, it says:

http://objects.githubusercontent.com ??? not sure what this is, possibly some cache server ?

Could also be that it stores it on it's own server.

This idea of storing it on it's own server has adventage and disadventage.

If github goes down more redudancy. if git-scm gets hacks then ofcourse problem with code injection possibility, same could be said for github but then vice versa.

This cache server githubusercontent.com is a bit suspicious though, could be a nice intermediate to inject "observation/monitor code" by CIA/NSA ! ;)

Bye for now,
  Skybuck.

GibHub provides (open-source free) the hosting for the git-scm site.. So yes, a big happy family ;-)
