Hi,

Since somewhere last week git has started to freeze on most commands issued.

Even just running git --version causes the program to freeze. The only way to unfreeze the windows terminal is by killing the git process. Hitting ctrl-c does nothing.

I can reproduce the issue in git bash and windows CMD.

My current git version is: 2.28.0.windows.1
My windows build is: 10.0.18363

Any pointers would be apreciated.

Update: I identified the issue. It was a piece of security software on my computer that was causing it.

Case closed.

Hello,

I'm facing a similar problem.
Could you share some details about what was the exact cause and action taken to solve the problem ?

Regards,

Olivier

Hi Olivier,

I had found (Using Procmon) that there was a silent employee monitoring software from Variato installed on my computer. By renaming the folder where the executables and DLLs were located I prevented the service from being able to inject the DLL into the process and the hang stopped happening instantly.xsEBgpI37W.gif

Hi Avrum,

Thank you for your feedback.
In the mean time I've also fixed my problem.
It was something completely different ... I had left a USB key with a Linux distribution on it connected to my laptop.
It seems that the Linux partition not accessible by Windows are generating the problem with Git-Bash.
I've just remove the USB key and Git-Bash is back to normal operation, if I plug back the USB key, the problem reoccur.

Hmmm, that's interesting. Regardless I wasn't using git bash. But nice find.

More than two years later, and this conversation helped me a lot.
I was having the same issue, and the reason was similar to Avrum's: "Webroot SecureAnywhere" antivirus.
Just shut it down and the issue was gone.
Thank you guys!
