Iturned on my computer this morning, and instantly got an Avira alert saying a threat has been detected and that some files had been quarantined.I go into the Avira quarantine section and find 32,000 files there, all from the wolfram/mathematica folder on my computer. I click on the mathematica shortcut on my computer and get a pop-up windows saying "The item 'Mathematica.exe' that this shortcut refers to has been moved or changed, do you want to delete the shortcut?"
No, I couldn't, so I just reinstalled mathematica. But then the question is what happened with the registry when avira quarantined the files? Did it remove mathematica from registry? Did it really thorougly clean it? It feels like something was left behind as my mathematica system settings don't seem to stick.
I have the same issue with Cubase and Wavelab files. few hours ago Avira removed 6050 of my files to quarentine.what can be done? in order to restore I need to click "ok" for avira message 6050 times (so annoying!)
A recent update for Avira antivirus software for Windows seems to have a negative impact on system stabilization for some users. For a couple of days, Avira users have reported issues with the antivirus software on their Windows machines.
Most users report freezes on startup. One user, who reported the issue on the Avira forum on Reddit described the issue in the following way: "Today, my PC suddenly started to freeze on startup. I tried disabling all background apps until only Avira was left. 2 other people I know had the same issue (both have Avira). Fixed it by going into safe startup and uninstalling Avira."
Other users chimed in and reported similar issues with Avira. German publisher Heise suggests that the Friday update for Avira products has caused the issue on Windows. The issue affects Windows 10 and Windows 11 according to Heise's report. For some users, windows PCs are usable for about two to three minutes before they lock up completely and can't be used anymore. Other users mention freezes during startup so that they can't log on at all on the system.
Affected users resolved the issue by uninstalling Avira from their PCs. It is unclear if this is the only solution to the issue, or if there is a less drastic option. Deactivation of a single component might also lead to restoration of system stability, but this has not been confirmed up until now.
Windows users who can log on may uninstall Avira by selecting Start > Settings > Apps. There, you need to search for Avira, activate the three-dots menu next to the entry and select the uninstall option. A restart is required to complete the operation.
Users who can't log on anymore because of the freezes may need to access the advanced options of Windows during boot. If the login screen loads, one option to access it is to click shutdown, hold down the Shift-key on the keyboard and select Restart. Another option is to use Windows Recovery Media, if available, or hope that Windows' own detection kicks in and displays the advanced boot options.
Avira security software is not the only software that has caused stability issues on Windows in recent time. Not all cause Windows stability issues, as some may affect certain applications. Mozilla addressed an Avast Bug in late 2022 that caused Firefox to crash.

Why is the Avira Firewall temporarily disabled on my computer?
We are aware that a recent update of Avira has caused an issue for some Windows 10 and Windows 11 users. The issue is caused by the Avira internal Firewall under a rare condition. It results in new Windows processes not being started.
I was going to mention this in the RC1 thread but it is not really firmware related. Before Sophos got into the UTM business, I had always thought of them as an AV company but mostly for Macs. I have noticed an alarming trend lately, Avira catches more viruses than Sophos, however sophos is the recommended engine in XG and UTM9 (due to PUA detection) and sandstorm functionality.
I got a couple of random files from virustotal and tried them on UTM9 and sophos XG v16.0.5... In both cases sophos passes the virus. Sad part is that even windows defender catches these files as Trojan:Win32/Spursint.F!cl[:(]
Great answer as always Luk, dual scan makes the surfing speed a little slower so I do like you and use sophos endpoints with avira on the gateway. I am not trying to point out the shortcomings of Sophos because like you said, threats appear so fast these days that protection in layers is the best protection. I am sure there are viruses that are in Sophos database that avira is not aware of.
I know this is an old thread but I too would like to know what the users around here do in regards to single/dual engine and which they select as default? Right now I have single engine scanning on, and the engine set to Sophos, but I am starting to feel more and more that having dual engine scanning is worth a small tradeoff in speed.
