Stellar Data Recovery is a well-featured, powerful software suite with multiple versions to choose from. Today we're analysing the Data Recovery Technician software which adds RAID support to the mix.

Some time ago we had a chance to look at Stellar's Data Recovery Professional software, a powerful set of tools for recovering your lost data. Now we have the latest version (v11.0.0.4) of the next step up the ladder, Stellar Data Recovery Technician, which brings support for RAID array data recovery to the already very well-featured software package.

Data Recovery Technician is a comprehensive package that supports data recovery from SSDs, hard drives and USB drives formatted with NTFS, exFAT and FAT (FAT16/FAT32). It also supports data recovery from a crashed and/or unbootable system as well as recovering files from scratched or partially burned optical media such as CD or DVDs. The Technician version also adds a host of RAID-supporting options to the mix; RAID data recovery from RAID 0, 5, 6, SHR, and Nested RAID 10, 50 and 60 arrays, recovery of RAID Volumes and RAID Reconstruction.

Along with the Technician version, there are five other Windows Stellar Data Recovery options: Free, Standard, Premium, Professional and Toolkit. Each step up the food chain brings extra features and recovery tools. It also comes in four Mac versions; Free, Standard, Professional and Premium.

It supports file recovery from approaching 300 different file types including office documents, PDFs, emails, images, databases, audio, video and archives.

Stellar Data Recovery Technician only takes a few minutes to install. Once installed you are met by the main dashboard. Starting off with the top toolbar, to the left is a hamburger shortcut to a drop-down menu. Next, there is a shortcut to Create A Recovery drive. Then there is a microscope icon which is a link out to Stellar's Laboratory Services. The next two icons are links to Stellar's comprehensive Help webpage and their online shop. To the far right of the toolbar is a grid icon which is a shortcut to more tools.

Hamburger menu
With this dropdown menu, you can access Settings (configure general, file types and recovery settings), Create a Disc Image, Save Scan (save scan information for resuming recovery at a later stage) Resume Recovery (resume recovery by using a scan information file), Submit Support Ticket and in the About option there is a link to the Help webpage.

Stellar Laboratory Services
If problems arise with data retrieval and the issues are too complicated or related to physical damage then there is the option to contact Stellar's Data Recovery Lab-Services.

Grid Menu
This menu provides links to other tools. You can create a recovery drive, repair videos and photos, monitor a drive and compare various versions of Stellar's data recovery software.

Repair Video

Use this option to try and repair corrupt and damaged videos with a preview option that allows you to check videos before saving. The utility supports HD, UHD, 4k, 8k, 360° and VR video formats and can repair videos recovered from corrupt SD cards, USB, CF cards etc.

Repair Photo

With Stella's Repair For Photo you can repair damaged, pixelated, distorted, disoriented, greyed-out, and corrupt JPEG and other RAW photo file formats with the added bonus of being able to repair multiple corrupt files simultaneously.

Monitor Drive

As well as all the data recovery options the software also supports a useful drive monitor. This monitors disk temperature, performance, and health and will send real-time alerts if a problem arises. It also supports disk cloning.

Compare Versions

The Compare Edition option links out to the Stellar website allowing comparison between all versions.

Thanks to the easy-to-follow dashboard, recovering data is pretty straightforward. The first job is to choose what data you want to recover, once this is done, clicking “Next” brings up the Recover From page. The Recover From section lists all the drives the software has found including external drives, optical drives, flash media and with the Technician version, any RAID arrays. Then it's just a matter of clicking the Scan button. We are using a 2TB Kioxia Exceria Pro PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD to test this software.

The scan can be stopped at any point. When the scan is completed a dialogue box appears with details of what the scan has found; the number of files, folders and how much data is recoverable. The complete list of data that has been found is clearly displayed. Scanned files are displayed in Tree View, File Type, and Deleted List formats and there is also a preview window that offers a preview of any found file that is supported by the software. This can be turned on or off. To scan our 2TB test drive took 5 seconds, finding 565 folders containing 7,396 files (301.29GB).

If the data cannot be found with the standard scan then there is the option of trying the Deep Scan mode (via an on/off button on the bottom of the Recover From page and a direct link on the standard scan results page) which scans the drive much more thoroughly. The Deep Scan took 6 minutes 3 seconds to complete on our 2TB test drive, with no new data found.

Once you are satisfied that all the files have been found, it's time for the final part of the recovery process, the data recovery itself. First off you have to select which of the files you want to recover (all or individual files), then when you press the Recover button, a location window pops up, and you then specify a location to save the data to. There are some useful tools under the Advanced Settings link at the bottom of the pop-up. Compression Option, Recovery Options and Add Filter.

Compression Option

Create a Zip using a couple of options; Zip up each file individually or Zip up all the found data to a single file.

Recovery Options

Here you can choose what files and folders are recovered; All files and folders (excluding deleted ones), All files and folders (Including deleted ones) or choose only the deleted files and folders.

Add Filter

Here you can add a file filer to include or exclude the chosen file types. There's a whole host of options or you can add ones that are not listed.

After you have chosen a location to save the files to it's just a matter of clicking on the Start Saving button. We chose to save the whole 301GB of found data. It took 43 minutes to write the data to a PCIe Gen 3 NVMe SSD, 50 minutes to a USB 3.2 Gen2 x 1 (10Gbps) external SSD and 5 hours 30 minutes to a NAS via a 2.5Gb/s network.

Data Recovery Technician supports a huge number (approaching 300) of file types by default, covering just about everything you might come across; office documents, PDFs, emails, images, audio, video, archives and databases. It also supports adding and editing custom file types. Support file types include:-

Acrobat Files
PDF

Archive Files
ARJ, CAB, 7Z, LZA, RPM, TAR, BZ2, HQX, RAR, SIT, SITX, ZIP

Audio Files
WAV, AIFF, RPS, MIDI, MID, M4A, AU, OGG, WMA, AAC, RFL, RNS, RA, RM, MP3, M3D, CDA, AU, OGG, WMA, AAC, RFL, SND

Database Files
MDF, DBF, CSV, MDB, ACCDR, ACCDT, ACCDA, ACCDB

Documents files
MDB, ACCDB, PDF, PS, C WK, FM3, FMT, WK1, WK3, WK4, DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, PPT, PPTX, SDW, QXD, QXP, EPS, QBB, QBW, WPD, DOT, WBK, DOCM, DOTX, DOTM, DOCB, XLT, XLM, XLSM, XLTX, XLTM, XLSB, XLA, XLAM, XLL, XLW, POT, PPS, PPTM, POTX, POTM, PPAM, PPSX, PPSM, SLDX, SLDM, ADE, ADP, MDA, MDN, MDT, MDF, MDE, LDB, AND, ACCDR, ACCDT, ACCDA, MDW, ACCDE, LLACCDB, XPS, ODT, OTT, ODM, ODS, OTS, ODP, OTP, ODB, HWP, MOBI.

Email Files
EMLX, PST, MSG, EDB, MBOX, NSF, GWI, EML, DBX, DCI, VCF

Image Files
NEF, CRW, CR2, CR3, ORF, SR2, SRF, K25, KDC, DCR, RAF, MRW, PEF, X3F, JPEG, JPG, TIFF, TIF, BMP, GIF, PNG, XCF, PAT, ARW, DNG, PSP, PCT, RAW, MOS, PSD, EPS, INDD, ERF, FH3, FH5, FH7, FH8, ARI, ARRIRAW, EMF, MNG, PPM, PGM, VSD, M3D.

Video files
AVI, WMV, ASF, MP4, MOV, M4V, 3GP, MXF, MKV, MTS, DIVX, OGM, MOI, VOB, MPEG, MPG, AVS, DVM, QT, ANM, SMJPEG, SCR, FLC, CLK, ANI, FLA, SWF, FLV, M4P, BRAW, AEP, AT3.

Miscellaneous files
MHT, MHTML, ASPX, JSP, PHP, DBF, QDG, QSD, ABD, CBK, CAS, CHM, HLP, NBP, QDF, RTF, TAX, TXT

Stellar Data Recovery Technician also supports multiple file systems such as

Windows file systems
NTFS, FAT, FAT16, FAT32, and exFAT

Linux file systems
EXT2, EXT3, and EXT4

Macintosh file systems
HFS, HFS+, and APFS

CD/DVD file systems
CDFS, UDF, and HFS+.

Stellar Data Recovery Technician can be used to also locate and restore lost or deleted partitions. In this example, we've deleted one of the partitions on the drive (in this case the 500GB G partition) and tested the software to see how good it is at finding the lost partition. First off, choose All Data from the What To Recover page and then choose the Can't Find Drive link from either the main Recover From page or the link at the bottom of the page. Then click Scan.

Data Recovery Technician then displays a list of drives it has found on the system. Select the drive with the missing partition and then press Search, a scan for lost or deleted partitions will be performed in the selected drive. When searching for the lost/deleted partitions, the Data Recovery Technician dashboard disappears but as soon as it's done searching it re-appears. It took the software just over 3 seconds to scan the complete disk to find the lost partition and its data on the Kioxia Exceria 2TB Gen 4 SSD we were using.

Once the scan is successful you can then move on to recover the partition via the Recover dialogue box. To recover the 500GB partition and its data and save it to a Gen3 NVMe drive took 33 minutes.

Stellar's Data Recovery Technician supports the creation of disk images, saving them as .IMG files. It supports imaging of hard disks, logical volumes on disks, USB drives and external hard drives. As with most actions when you use Stellar Data Recovery Technician you start from the dashboard but this time not via an icon. With the Technician version of the software, the Create Disk Image link is in the drop-down menu accessed via the "hamburger" shortcut. The software displays all the discs and partitions in the system. You then select which one you want to image, in this case, it was a 150GB partition. Clicking on the Start Imaging button starts the process.

You are then asked in the ‘Create Media Image to Save‘ window to select where the image is to be saved to, once this is done. Click 'Start Imaging' and the process begins

It took just over 4 minutes for the software to create an image of the 150GB drive.

Data Recovery Technician also supports the creation of recovery drives. To create a drive you will need an empty USB thumb drive (of at least 1GB size). You can access the 'Create Recovery Drive' page either by using the second icon in from the left on the top toolbar or by using the link in the 'Grid Menu'.

You then select the USB drive from a drop-down list and click ‘Create Recovery Drive’ and click ‘OK’ to begin the process. Once the process is completed, a new ‘Activation’ window appears to allow you to activate the software.

The Technician version of Stellar's Data Recovery software brings with it support for recovering data from RAID 0, 5, 6 and nested RAID 10, 50 and 60 arrays using FAT32, EXT4, NTFS, ZFS, BTFRS and XFS file systems. The software (Windows only - 11, 10, 8 & 7) doesn't need a RAID controller card to recover missing data and works with both hardware and software RAID arrays. It can also restore RAID data even if the Windows system fails to boot via an easy-to-make bootable recovery USB drive.

The software can retrieve data from a number of scenarios where RAID arrays fail with the potential of complete data loss. These include:-

Deleted or lost RAID Data
Recover data from logically corrupt, inaccessible, crashed, or failed RAID arrays due to accidental data loss, corrupted file systems, malware or power outages.

Incorrect RAID array rebuilds
If a RAID array rebuild fails due to mistakes during setup, including the wrong configuration being used, wrong stripe size or installing the discs in the wrong order, the data can be recovered.

RAID error messages
Retrieve data from inaccessible volumes and disks that produce read/write errors while accessing data.

SSD Raid arrays
Recover data from logically corrupted, formatted or deleted SSD RAID drives.

Formatted RAID array Recovery
Technician automatically rebuilds a virtual RAID array to recover data from a formatted array.

RAID partitions
The software can recover data from failed, deleted, undetected or corrupted RAID partitions.

NAS
Technician can also be used to recover data from corrupted or inaccessible RAID 0, 5 or 6-based NAS servers. The data retrieval process in this instance is a bit more complicated than the usual method as the disks have to be removed from the NAS and all of them connected to a PC at the same time.

Data Recovery Technician supports Iomega StorCenter, Buffalo Terrastation, LinkStation, Synology, LaCie, QNAP and other Linux-based NAS devices supporting FAT32, EXT4, NTFS, ZFS, BTFRS and XFS file formats.

Stellar has been in the data care business for the past 30 years and offers a huge range of software utilities to protect and recover all sorts of data for both consumers and enterprise market segments. They offer suites of tools like the Stellar Data Recovery series or single packages such as Photo Recovery, Repair For Video, iPhone Data Recovery and Repair for Exchange.

Attempting to recover missing data may seem a bit daunting to some and it certainly helps when the software you are using is more of an aid than a hindrance, for what is already a complex job. Stellar Data Recovery Technician is a feature-rich data recovery tool that you might think would be a bit challenging to use but this is not the case. To their credit Stellar has, by the use of a series of icons and tick boxes made navigating through the basic job of data retrieval a lot less painful than it might otherwise be. The preview window is useful to confirm that the files found are the ones wanted. There's also a very good online user manual for the software.

Not only does the Data Recovery Technician deal deal with data recovery from standard disc setups, but it also brings RAID array support allowing many data recovery options from failed or corrupted RAID arrays. At the time of writing though it only supports RAID 0, 5, 6 and nested RAID 10, 50 and 60 arrays.

As well as the data recovery aspect, Data Recovery Technician also supports disc imaging with the option of imaging the whole drive or a selected region and It also has its own useful built-in disk monitoring utility.

When dealing with something as sensitive as data recovery it's good to know that there is a decent level of support should things go awry. Stellar Data Recovery offers live chat, phone and online ticket support. You also get access to a comprehensive knowledge base and a decent-sized FAQ section. If all else fails and you can't get your data back then there is the option to contact Stellar Data Recovery Lab Services. Stellar's lab technicians try to troubleshoot the problem and recover your data from the storage medium at one of their Stellar Data Recovery Labs. They offer free quotations and offer a no-cure-no-pay policy.

While the Quick Scan option is indeed quick, the Deep Scan does take some time to complete. The actual data recovery process takes a while as well but in this case, it's better to be safe than sorry. The recovery performance can be improved if you know what file types you are looking for as you can specify exactly what file extensions you are trying to recover in the Advanced Options.

Although the specs for the software mention Intel Pentium processors as a system requirement, we used the software on an AMD-based rig without any problem. Each version of the Data Recovery suite comes with a free download option so you can evaluate it to see if it's suitable for your needs before purchasing it.

Pricing for Stellar's Data Recovery Technician Edition is currently £169 for a 1-year license (on sale from £249) and £339 for a lifetime license (on sale from £509), both for a single system. Bulk buying options for multiple devices are available for 5,10, 25, 50, 100 and 200 devices.

You can read more, or purchase Stellar Data Recovery Technician, directly from their website HERE.

Discuss on our Facebook page HERE.

Pros

Large range of data recovery tools.
Default scans are quick and efficient.
 Disk monitoring.
Huge range of supported file types.

Cons

 Deep scans take some time.
 Subscriptions are a little pricey.

KitGuru says Stellar Data Recovery Technician is an easy-to-use, but powerful data recovery tool that guides you through a tricky job with ease thanks to the use of check boxes and icons. It offers data retrieval options from the more basic for home use to advanced for business users.

@type":"ImageObject
https://
