Usingthe latest upgrade of hardware and software (see signature for details) of my EDIUS based editing system for the first time for real, I am noticing a very annoying "sluggishness" of the user interface. For example, when trimming a frame off a clip (using -key) it takes about five seconds before the display reacts (timeline as well as video output on external monitor). Meanwhile, playback control (e.g. J, K, L-keys) is as quick as can be and so is rendering to file. Also, the system is very stable (no crashes or other such misbehaviour).

At times when the system "goes away to think" I noticed that Windows Task Manager shows a CPU load for "EDIUS" of 49-50% whereas the remaining 49-50% end up on the "System Idle Process". For all I know this looks as if EDIUS is only using one of the two processor cores (using Intel Core2Duo E6750). However, from the many posts I read on this forum and elsewhere I gathered that the hardware I have now got is in widespread use by EDIUS users, so I am a little surprised that I am having these problems.

Just checked: there are two processors shown under DeviceManager, though I did notice the driver version was of 01.04.2004, seems a little ancient. Also, DVStormRT card is sharing an IRQ with the UltraATA Storage Controller, but I don't think that is the problem as there is no problem with playback through the DVStorm card.

Blindly fiddling with device drivers (e.g. graphics card or motherboard chip set), BIOS or WindowsRegistry settings seems pointless considering that such activities can lead to disaster, and I rather do "educated fiddling".

A wee message to Canopus UK Technical support was promptly answered today.

They suggested to install version 4.24 as long as I was wary of the later upgrades. Apparently 4.24 should solve a few of the problems I found (including the one mentioned in another thread with audio "blibs" where the SoundSoap filter is used).

I will keep that one till later. I had IRQ conflicts on my old PC at one time (after it had worked perfectly fine for years). In the end I re-installed Windows so that I could do a non-ACPI installation (one of those great hidden secrets where you have to press F6 (I think) during the early stages of Setup) and assign IRQs manually for the DVStorm card and everything else that previously got in the way. All this, as I mentioned, after years of trouble-free operation and without changes to the hardware or software.

Anyway, if it was an IRQ conflict I would expect problems with recording or playback when data is actually going through the card at high rates. However, the problems I have are more the other, software, end where the user interface appears to be awfully slow.

Also if you're using Soundsoap, don't, although it comes bundled with Edius, it isn't correctly implemented - you get awful delays and the Edius VST bridge is crap causing pops at the file entry points on the timeline. Use it in an external audio platform such as Soundforge or Vegas or Audition where it works fine - then re import the file.

Just a quick note, I had the same sort of issues, I changed the display resolution, from my high setting down to the standard 1024, ran edius was fine, changed it back to the 1600 and tried again, problem gone? so i figure your problem could be graphics related? It didnt matter so much cus i then upgraded to version 4.54 and there was no problems what so ever. May I just say that the upgrade is awesome, yes a new design style but wow is it slick! As always my 4p worth.

The bad news: I am not entirely sure which of the system tweaks have done the trick. However, I am keen to undo individual tweaks until I know what caused and fixed the problem. I will be in touch once I have got to the bottom of this problem.

Meanwhile, you might find some interest in the "WindowsXP" section at TweakHound ( ) where the modifications that have solved my system problem have come from. I have found the author of this site very knowledgable and very thorough in his tweak testing and documenting - a huge benefit amongst the general poorly informed dabbling found elsewhere on the Internet.

There are quite a few pages to read but it is really useful stuff. Have a look yourself.

Aimed at an intermediate through advanced level audience, Edius 5 is a powerful real-time editing system offering a number of professional features, which include multi cam editing (up to eight sources), waveform and vector scope capabilities.

The package contains three discs including the Edius 5 Installation DVD, TitleMotion Pro Installation CD and a Bonus Contents DVD. The Bonus DVD includes Corel DVD MovieFactory SE, NewBlue Art /Film /Motion Effects, ProDAD Vitascene/Mercalli, iZotope Audio VST Plugins and a collection of stock footage by Art Beats. Also included are a Quick Start Guide and USB Key.

Once running, the program functioned quite well and provided a good, rapid workflow. It showed strong stability as it ran very solidly through the testing period on a Dell workstation (Intel Core 2 Quad CPU, 4GB RAM, 64-bit Windows Vista Business and ATI Radeon HD 2400 video card), with no hiccups, burps, or stalls of any sort.

Edius 5 aims for the advanced user and for the most part succeeds. It is deficient however in its effects collection and this lack will undoubtedly leave the advanced user wanting. A collection of third party applications has been included in an attempt to compensate for this weakness. The result is a collection of different interfaces and overlapping effects.

The interface is a bit primitive. It continues to use pop-up windows for transitions and effects while Premiere and Final Cut have abandoned these in favor of more efficient integrated panels and customizable workspaces.

In spite of its quirks, Edius 5 is a powerful program with much to offer. If your computer meets the minimum requirements, you like the idea of real-time editing and are undaunted by the learning curve, lack of effects and pop-up windows then you might like to cruise on over to desktop.grassvalley.com/products/EDIUS/index.php for a free 30-day trial.

Prior to public defense, the doctoral candidate, whether or not they request an embargo for the dissemination of the thesis for one year, must register such document and enter the data required by the app Teseo.

In Teseo, the first step is to register as a user in the section 'Register as a PhD student' where you must fill in your personal details and enter a password. Once registered, you must "Log in as a registered user", "create", "register the thesis". You must fill in the information requested, always go to the last tab so that all data is saved. It is important to indicate, in the Department section, information regarding the support staff for the program so that, if necessary, they can have access to your Teseo file.

Take notice on the fact that in order to enter the thesis address and committee details, you must enter the ITIN (NIF)/Passport number of each person; this information is available in the USC Xescampus application which support admins use to complete the form.

The EDIUS will be validated, in the month following that of the defense, the Teseo files of the PhD thesis defended and the pdf will be incorporated, considering what is indicated about the dissemination by the PhD student, and the file will be pending publication by the Ministry.

Minerva Repository: you do not have to do anything in the Minerva Repository since, as you will see in the explanation, the Publications and Scientific Exchange Service is in charge of adding the information provided by the School.

In accordance with art. 14.5 of RD 99/2011 of 28 January, of the Ministry of Education (BOE of 10 February) which regulates the official PhD classes, the universities will have to deal, once the thesis has been approved, with its open format electronic file in the institutional repositories. Thus, EDIUS will send the .pdf file of the thesis to the University Press, which will take care of creating its index, as well as the final preparation of the .pdf file, the allocation of URI identifier (handle) and final location in the USC Minerva institutional repository ( ).
