I'm working on a grant funded project, wherein our funder (the Knight
Foundation) has explicitly required us to use open source software to
develop the games they've funded.
I was not at all surprised to hear that a number of other grantees have
been grumbling about the requirement.
I've just posted a blog entry on the PBS Idea Lab (another requirement
of the grant ...) about why I think that their decision to push their
grantees to use open source software (they've never said "free") is
actually a good thing:

I'd love any feedback that you might have. It sounds like they may scrap
the requirement in their next round of funding -- I'd rather see them
figure out how to do it well and I think that hearing from people who
can articulate the reasons that software freedom matters could help.
Thanks!
Amanda
