Joe Maffei and Karl Telleen authored design examples of concrete walls, including a cantilever wall and a wall with coupling beams, published in the SEAOC Structural/Seismic Design Manuals. The most recent edition of the examples is based on the 2012 International Building Code and referenced standards. The examples follow the provisions of the building code and also discuss recommendations for design and detailing based on research and examples from past earthquakes. Joe and Karl have presented seminars on the SEAOC manuals throughout California and in Oregon.
This document summarizes a research project on dissipative base connections for steel moment frames. The project involves several collaborators and is funded by PEER, AISC, and others. The overall research plan includes experimental component studies, simulation studies using developed component models, and validation using instrumented buildings. The objectives are to develop design methods and details for frames with dissipative bases that localize yielding, and to inform code changes. Experimental testing of new connection details is underway. Additional work includes simulations of frame response, biaxial bending studies, and reliability analyses. The end goals are design guides, code changes, and manuals to enable the use of dissipative base connections.Read less
