Fitting to the name of the song, the intro sets the tone for the album with introspective reflection. A smooth beat is matched by an equally smooth flow and impressive bars from Topaz to start things off. A really soothing chorus comes in from Leven Kali, somebody that Topaz has some history with now in collaboration, to close out a solid intro.

Topaz opens over a really slow beat with an effortless flow and lyricism. The relaxed intro finds Topaz drifting in a dreamy nostalgia, reflecting on his youth once again. Halfway through this song, we get a beat switch and a switch of time frame. Now looking at the present, refreshing and feel-good production comes in and Topaz matches it with a variety of flows and a flawless delivery. One of the best songs on the album, with such an entertaining structure and a great performance.

The rapping ability on display is the highest that it has been at any point of his career and the writing throughout the album is phenomenal. Topaz presents a wide array of highly-skilled and refreshing flows, deliveries and intonations, hitting a diversity of vocal delivery that few artists in modern hip-hop can match. Topaz picked a lot of fitting beats that were able to convey a nostalgic feel with lots of relaxed soul and funk vibes, while also incorporating a modern twist in areas.

From busking on the streets of Melbourne to going viral with a live bedroom recording of the song "Jungle," Tash Sultana has become one of Australia's biggest breakout success stories of the past year. After releasing the debut EP, "Notion," Sultana went into the studio to write, record, and produce the new album, Flow State. It's a powerful album that brings Sultana's DIY aesthetic into a hi-fi environment.

Flow State is a body of work that flirts with being a jam session and exposes Sultana's expansive musicianship. The debut album stays true to the guitar looping one-person band that the Aussie songwriter gained notoriety for, and the songs explore new themes from R&B, calypso, and even heavier riff laden songs that reference some prog rock influences. The album has an exhaustive amount of different musical changes and directions and feels like it could be part one of a multi-album release.

Tash Sultana proves that they harbor boundless creativity and a soulfulness that wasn't as present on the introductory EP. For a debut that was one of the most anticipated of the year for Aussiephiles, Flow State showcases all of Sultana's talent as a songwriter and producer which you can hear from the vibey third track, "Cigarettes," to the haunting production on "Pink Moon." The album isn't without the loop driven songs like, "Salvation," and "Blackbird," but the production, all handled by Sultana, adds a new dimension to music.

Tash Sultana's debut album, Flow State, is out now on Mom+Pop Records.

Judith Owen pays homage to LA's troubadour sound of the 1970s with her new album, 'Ebb & Flow', out May 6. To get that sound, the "London-Welsh" singer-songwriter assembled a backing band straight from the source: guitarist Waddy Wachtel, bassist Lee Sklar and drummer Russ Kunkel, who played on seminal albums by Carole King, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Jackson Browne and hundreds of others. 'Ebb & Flow' marks the first time the three musicians have played together in the same room in 15 years.

The album, produced by Owen and David Z in London and Los Angeles, features potent songs about love and loss, dreams and despair, exploring the duality of the human condition. "You're Not Here Anymore," about the early loss of her mother, and "I Would Give Anything," about the recent passing of her father, contrast perfectly with covers of Mungo Jerry's "In the Summertime," whose chords and melody Owen reworks to sound more pensive than boisterous, and a rousing version of James Taylor's "Hey Mister, That's Me Up on the Jukebox."
