Australian Immigration - About Immigration
Introduction
Australia's culturally diverse society includes its Indigenous peoples and settlers from countries all around the world. Immigration is an important feature of Australian society. Since 1945, over six million people from 200 countries have come to Australia as new settlers. Migrants have made a major contribution to shaping modern Australia. People born overseas make up almost one quarter of the total population.
As the economy of Australia is booming and the population growth in the country is not matching the growing workforce needs, Australian immigration is getting more and more popular around the world. In the year 2007 approximately 150,000 people migrated to Australia in different categories from almost 120 countries of the world, this figure is expected to grow by 30% in year 2008. Most important migration category is General skilled Migration Program (GSMP).
This category is especially for those people who are not sponsored by an employer and who have skills in particular occupations required. The federal government sets immigration intake numbers on a yearly basis. Australia's immigration policies are non-discriminatory and all applicants to migrate must meet the same selection criteria.
