Hi all,

We’ve just released a new version of the Time Machine Creator.  This is the first version that’s designed to run on just about any PC or Mac, and it has a nice graphical interface to make it easy to create a Time Machine.  It’s also much faster and more efficient than the previous software, which we typically only ran on the big Warp cluster at CMU.  On a typical machine, this new software takes around 30 seconds per input image to create a time machine, but if you have a fast machine with lots of cores you can take advantage of this too.  (And if you have something that’s still larger than can be done on your local machine, let us know and we’ll help set up the computation on a cloud service, or here at CMU).

The graphical interface currently supports a very simple form of capture -- it assumes you have a single camera mounted on a tripod, taking multiple pictures.  Depending on your camera, this gives you a reasonable amount of zoomability -- some cameras now are as large as 20, 30, or 50 megapixels per frame.  You can find more information about how to use it here.

If you’re instead capturing mosaics, either with mulitiple cameras in parallel, or a single camera mounted on a timelapse GigaPan-style rig, you can use the richer interface from the command-line, documented here.  We anticipate adding the mosaic capture modes to the graphical interface in future releases.

Also new in this release is the ability to immediately see your results before you upload to a web site.  You can browse your Time Machine using your local web browser pointed to a file: URL (just click the “View Time Machine” button).  (This opens up the “view.html” page inside the “.timemachine” folder you created).

And it’s now easier than ever to put your time machine on a website.  Simply copy the contents of the newly created “.timemachine” folder to your website, and link to the view.html.  It’s also pretty easy to copy the code from view.html into your own page to embed.

And finally, if and when you’d like to upload to timemachine.gigapan.org, let us know and we’ll help out.  We don’t yet have automation for that step, but will work to add that in a future version.

If you try it out, please let us know how it goes! If you do have comments or suggestions, please signup to our Time Machine Creator google group.
