Trent has been writing about video games for over ten years and playing them since he stumbled on the shiny gold Legend of Zelda cartridge as a kid. Since then, he has played anything and everything from AAA RPGs to ultra-niche visual novels and dating sims, reviewing many of them right here.

I can see where the review is coming from, but at the same time the Switch still is a portable system like mobile so I can see people enjoying a game of this kind on it and even more so since thankfully the worst parts of mobile games are gone and at such a low starting price - definitely not a priority for me considering the difficulty spikes etc., but I still don't exclude eventually getting it myself.
That said, the Metal Slug game I'm looking forward to the most (other than playing the older games available on Switch at some point, have never finished them in arcades) is Tactics, fingers crossed that will be much better than this one!

Bit surprised to find out there's a scaled back roster considering how ridiculously massive the roster seemed to be to me when I loaded up the game and went through them all... guess they will be added in periodically.

I could get behind this as a way to kill some time with mindless amusement on the go as I do love a bit of Metal Slug, but equally I could see it being a quick route to lobbing my Switch through the nearest window. Quite the pickle.

I'm still on the fence on this one. On one hand, I don't terribly mind the grindfest and unmonetized gacha collections, on the other, the Switch might be portable but it's not like I can slip it from my pocket and play this while I wait in line at the bank.
If anything, I'm glad the game has been preserved outside the dreaded mobile gacha cycle of doom

@Solomon_Rambling The Battle Cats is available on Switch, by the way... Only in Japan and SEA(South East Asia). English language is available in the SEA version.
Edit: It will be available on NA eShop on July 2nd!

I wouldn't hold your breath for a physical compilation release.
But ya, I wish Arcade Archives would have individual display/Background artwork for each game they release rather than the nearly all black void with the ugly grey stripe.

Would be interesting if Marco instead pursued a series of trade alliances that made it economically prohibitive for the Rebel Army to continue operations. But I suppose that would be a different kind of game altogether.

I haven't played this game too much (I haven't played the Switch that much in general lately for some reason...), but yeah...it has...difficulty problems. Something that Battle Cats did on the Switch (which is finally coming to NA eshop next week) was balance things out a bit since they removed the micro-transaction stuff as well. No idea if this game did the same thing.

As such, I'm sure it's a mostly mindless and humorous auto-battling type game, where the fun lies in unlocking and wielding outrageous units and weapons in your little army. But yeah, I imagine you have to grind and gacha your way to victory, so it won't be for everyone!

This is truly an incredible game that keeps giving back, and gets better the longer that you play. It's a spinoff of a spinoff. MS Attack was a remake of 2014's MS Defense. This has the best of both of those mobile games. $10 is a steal for the amount of playtime is in this game. It isn't for everyone because there is grinding.

@Teksetter you are spot on. This game deserves way higher than a 5. They did really well transitioning this from a mobile game. There is so much content for ten bucks. And the game gets better the longer you play it seeing as how you unlock more features. Half of them they didn't even mention in the review.

Decided to play the game some more now, forget what I've said about the difficulty spike...I haven't truly reached a wall yet. After you grab some new units and stuff and level them up, equip them with stuff...you won't have too much trouble.

I get that this game isn't for everyone, but that's true of any game. Grindy? Sure, but some of us grew up with NES RPGs. Those were like 95% grinding. I never minded it and I still don't. It's not really that you HAVE to grind, it's that you GET to grind. If you view it as a means to progress, an obstacle, this game isn't for you. I'm not interested in high skill fighting games, but I wouldn't give a high skill cap fighting game a low score because of it. I'd say this is a misunderstood genre.

The thing about these gacha games is that you grind for an item, then you feel pleased when you complete another set of items for a character and the character ranks up. The biggest problem is that you need activate a couple of units manually to hit specific hidden locations in several stages. Since a lot of this game is automated, that particular mechanic gets a bit annoying, it doesn't really blend with the rest of the design, it forces user engagement in the wrong place.

As for the lamentations over where Metal Slug has "gone" - I sincerely doubt that they took a development team away from developing metal slug to do this. Every franchise gets one or several mobile gacha games. That didn't mean those franchises are "going" in that direction, it's just a presence in popular space. There's just no way this somehow took away from the future of Metal Slug.

I love Metal Slug. The Art style and the humor. I pulled the trigger on this one, but wish I hadn't. It's really very very "surface level" and grindy. Oh and yes, the difficulty spikes are NO joke at all.

@wiiware
Unfortunately, yesterday was the final day of the demo.
How lucky am I, right? Lol.
Still, I've heard mostly mixed reactions to it so far and it's not exactly what I want from this IP anyway.

I played the game demo for a while and I think the game is more like expanded "into the breach" rather than "final fantasy tactics", maybe it's gonna be different in the final game. I hope there's another demo soon.

Originally one of the worst sets ever, and also dormant for ages, we now have a new set of true forms for all the preexisting ubers and then a new uber on top of that. However, with previous standard having one uber in particular being especially terrible, and the best uber in the set being ok at the time, these true forms have the potential to make the set way better, so lets see how it turns out.

I'm gonna talk about the ubers without their true forms as well due to how short this list would be otherwise. Hopefully we can see som comparisons between how these ubers and the set have gotten better, if they have at all.

For being not only the worst uber in the set and arguably the worst uber in the whole game, Huge Hermit somehow has more positive elements to his kit than everyone else in the set. In fact, I'd say Huge Hermit should have been the best uber in the set by a long shot. Unfortunately, he's basically unusable for the simple reason of excruciatingly low health for a tanker. Most uber tankers, specifically the good ones, have 120k health or higher. Huge Hermit only has 50k, which so freakishly bad that he begins falling of in early SOL simply because Titan, Roe, the Islands do so much better. Heck, even Mecha Bun outclassed him, which should show you the level of quality we have here. Offense is another failing point, as although his dps is super high, he attacks super quickly and his damage can't be sustained. That would be fine if he had a bit of range, but he's a melee unit, so it doesn't help. That being said, outside of atrocious damage and health, his kit is otherwise very good, sporting especially good mobility for a tanker, and a pretty good niche. If he had resist instead of strong, and 120k health, he'd be a very strong unit, and his offense could be justified better since he'd rack up value overtime with high enough health. Alas, the results say otherwise.

Every single stat Jupiter King has, outside of health, is either average or below average. His cost is fine, his health is high, and his range is nice, but he has average dps, a mediocre recharge, sluggish speed, mediocre knockback count, and a kind of iffy niche with equally iffy performance. His generalist performance can be summarized as average. Yes, you can use him in like 60%-70% of situations in the game, but he basically never shines. As such, we're left with niche performance, in which he is a clumsy version of Mizli. He already has a niche that requires some added thought in utilizing, but he also has pretty eh uptime and only 50% chances for the knockback or the slow and none of the bulk Mizli can use as a failsafe. He takes a good while to attack as well. Even in the non-uber category, if you really need to knockback an alien, Racquet is right there and she does super well in those situations. Even then, I think it's clear that he's probably supposed to be the set generalist, but he doesn't hold any value as a generalist despite that.

Basically just Jupiter King but less mediocre. As a generalist, he has lower range and higher dps, and lower health but an extra knockback. Generalist value is basically the same, but I personally find him a bit more flexible from his quicker recharge and speed while maintaining the same cost. The bigger differences between Morden and Jupiter King is that Morden has a vastly quicker attack rate and higher bulk, allowing him to see more usage in the same knockback league. He's still mostly unimpressive, but he can actually be kind of cool in the right scenario via his high aggression.

Simply from having the best niche, Hido has the best usage out of all the ubers in the set. While his overall generalist value is still kind of meh, and he's actually very expensive unlike every other uber in the set, Strong + knockback against floating is a pretty good niche for him to have, as he actually has 9k dps against the trait, and a quick attack rate on top of that. He has overall strong compatibility against the trait, and his knockback further adds to his aggressive nature, allowing him to be a strong counter to the trait. As a bonus, he has extremely good speed. High enough to reach the frontline quickly but not too high as to endanger himself. He also has some pretty good health. He still has the mobility issues despite high speed since he's very expensive and takes a while to recharge, but you have a reason to work around these issues and you don't with the other guys. Therefore, he's the best one. Not amazing, but pretty good.
