Iuse 1Password pretty much to keep track of the hundred or so different userid/password combinations and was recently encouraged to install the Windows app as it was supposed to provide additional functionality in version 8. All I see from the Windows App so far is a considerable additional overhead in the Firefox browser. What am I missing?
Nothing, except that the desktop app provides more functionality than the browser extension. If the browser extension is all you need, you're fine. The desktop app helps you to organize your data better. It has tags for customized categories, and the editor is better than the web-based one.
It also has the advantage that you configure it in a way that it shares its unlock with the browser extension, and you can configure the desktop app to conveniently unlock with a pin instead of always having to enter the long master password. So you need to enter your master password only once after every machine reboot, but after that you only need to enter the pin.
I see the browser extension as read-only user of my data, while I see the desktop app as editor and manager of my data.
However, I'm not sure what you mean with "additional overhead" in the Firefox browser.
I likewise think of 1Password in the browser as my "daily driver" - I can do a quick lookup of credentials here, generate a new login, and so on. This is the app that also makes it possible for 1Password to auto-fill passwords into your browser, so I consider it a key piece of software for that reason.
When it comes to more full-featured editing, I much prefer the 1Password desktop app. This is where I do things with Collections, check over Watchtower results, remove any duplicates, erroneous items, or no-longer-valid logins, and work with Secure Notes.
When I need to fill a username / password combination into an app, or pull a login really fast for some other non-browser destination, I use Ctrl + Shift + Space to call up Quick Access.
I'm not sure if this is because I reset my password (begin recovery) and the 1Password desktop app is keeping my old secret key. The only thing that shows up on the desktop app is an input field for my master password. Any ideas?
I too am having the exact same issue after resetting my password (begin recovery). Logging in using the web works fine but even after re-installing 1Password for Windows, logging in using the app is a fail. Looking forward to the resolution.
Thanks.

Update:
I tried this and it worked:
1. Uninstall the 1Password desktop application.
2. Open %LOCALAPPDATA%\ and deleted 1Password. (This folder was left behind after uninstalling.)
3. Reinstalled 1Password for Windows application.
4. Open 1Password for Windows. I can now enter the usual items required when installing the app the first time (sign-in address, email address, secret key, master password).
Yeah, haven't tried it yet. I'm trying to get it on all employees computers and a few have had this issue so I'm scheduling them today, tomorrow, and next week. I'll keep this thread updated. Thank you, both!
If you've begun the recovery, you'd still be able to unlock the app with the original master password. However, if you forgot the master password completely and reset it on the web site, then yes, for the moment; you'd need to reset the local database by right-clicking on 1Password icon to select exit and rename the data folder in the %LOCALAPPDATA%\1Password.
We plan to update the app in the future to detect a recovered account and prompt for the new password without having to unlock with the main app's password (assuming the recovery account is the only account in the app as other accounts might be signed in).
With the 1Password app integration turned on, you can sign in to 1Password CLI with the accounts you've added to the 1Password desktop app. Then you can authenticate 1Password CLI the same way you unlock your device, like with your fingerprint, face, Apple Watch, Windows Hello PIN, or device user password.
Despite its simplicity, 1Password 8 is packed with features to help you organize your digital life. Create vaults directly from the sidebar, find recently deleted items, and focus in on the vaults and items you need with Collections.
Finding your items has never been quicker, and now creating them has never been easier. It all starts with a smart catalogue of suggested items to choose from, making it a snap to create what you need.
Protect your privacy and prevent websites from tracking you by using a unique email address when signing up to new services. With our new Fastmail integration you can create Masked Emails directly from within registration and signup forms. And you can easily block incoming emails directly from 1Password if you find your Masked Email receiving unwanted mail.
Item suggestions now appear exactly where you need them, directly within the webpage. Quickly fill a login or enter a credit card or address without leaving the webform. And on websites that use multiple pages for logging in, 1Password will automatically fill all of the login forms (including 2FA codes!) with a single click.
Smart Passwords enable you to use strong, unique passwords that are customized specifically for the site. Automatically fill these suggested passwords directly from within registration and signup pages.
The new browser experience integrates seamlessly with the desktop app, using a secure connection to ensure a consistent lock state. It also brings support for passwordless to the browser with Windows Hello.
Securely sharing items with others in your 1Password Families and 1Password Business accounts is super easy, too. With shared vaults, items magically appear for everyone you grant access to and everything shared in this way will prominently show who has access.
Windows Hello is integrated directly into the lock screen to provide a passwordless unlock experience. And those with a TPM 2.0-enabled PC are in for a treat later this year when our enhanced support for Windows Hello will allow unlocking 1Password, even after app restarts and system reboots (join our beta family to be the first to enjoy this once available). ?
I originally wrote about these at length but had to trim them during the editing process. I really enjoyed what I wrote so I collected them into a gorgeous screenshot gallery at the end of this post. ?
The development team and I will also be hosting an AMA this Thursday, November 18th at 1PM Eastern. We always have a lot of fun with these and I love giving out gold for questions, along with bestowing the Ternion All-Powerful award upon the best question. ?
Categories have delightful new icons and now sit atop your item list as an intuitive dropdown filter, giving the sidebar plenty of room to show all your vaults and their accounts. Things were so spacious we had plenty of room to include tags, Archive, and Recently Deleted items in the sidebar.
Add all your essential travel information to 1Password so you have it handy while crossing borders and while abroad. ?️ And when travelling use Travel Mode to remove sensitive vaults from your devices when crossing the border.
Securely share items with anyone, including those outside your team or family. Simply create a secure sharing link and share it with anyone. They can view your shared secret in their browser without installing 1Password.
The item editing experience is much more powerful thanks to autocompletion of usernames and tags, draft protection, and the ability to add attachments. You can also generate secure answers for security questions and allow 1Password in your browser to automatically fill them for you.
Watchtower notifies you when a site has been compromised so you can protect yourself by changing your password. You can also optionally enable integration with Have I Been Pwned? to see if any of your passwords have been included in a data breach.
Use the Large Type feature to view your information in a super big, readable font. Numbers and symbols appear in a different colour to enhance readability even further. And Large Type is available throughout the app, not just password fields.
When enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) for a website, 1Password can automatically scan the QRCode and save the 2FA secret. The current one-time password is then automatically copied to your clipboard for easy confirmation.
The lock screen displays your account avatars to help prevent potential phishing attempts. It also has a reveal option for your password, which is perfect for those times youre positiv yo didnt misss typpe yur pasword. ?
Expected behavior:
Prior to the latest beta update, autofill was working as expected. Now, Quick Access is no longer detecting what site Orion's on, and it also isn't sure if Orion should have access to the fill. When it's overridden, it still can't fill.
Vlad The issue doesn't appear to be that 1password has associated my login credentials with Orion. I've checked and none of my logins has an app association. I can use cmd+\ while in DuckDuckGo browser (which doesn't support extensions of any kind) and the creds fill in fine.
Jimothy Orion RC is not yet in trusted browser list for 1Password's global autofill (as 1Password have a list of bundle identifiers to verify before showing autofill suggestions), as it uses different bundle identifier than Orion beta. So there's no regression ?
The switch went great and everything worked well. Then, about 4 or so weeks ago the Firefox extension for 1Password just stopped working. Clicking on the extension icon did nothing and selecting login fields on webpages no longer showed 1Password suggestions.
When the classic uninstall/re-install advice from 1Password didn't resolve the issue and a few quick searches on Google also proved fruitless, I gave up. This was a minor inconvenience but because the 1Password desktop app was still working fine and I didn't want to waste any more time trying to fix it, I let it be.
