Unfortunately, there is still a long way to go to achieve full equality of rights and opportunities between men and women, warns UN Women. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to end the multiple forms of gender violence and secure equal access to quality education and health, economic resources and participation in political life for both women and girls and men and boys. It is also essential to achieve equal opportunities in access to employment and to positions of leadership and decision-making at all levels.
The UN Secretary-General, Mr. António Guterres has stated that achieving gender equality and empowering women and girls is the unfinished business of our time, and the greatest human rights challenge in our world.
In 1985, the World Conference to Review and Appraise the Achievements of the United Nations Decade for Women: Equality, Development and Peace, was held in Nairobi. It was convened at a time when the movement for gender equality had finally gained true global recognition, and 15,000 representatives of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) participated in a parallel NGO Forum.
Gender equality will be achieved only when women and men enjoy the same opportunities, rights and obligations in all spheres of life. This means sharing equally in the distribution of power and influence and having equal opportunities for financial independence, education, health access and the fulfillment of ambitions. Gender equality demands the empowerment of women, with a focus on identifying and redressing power imbalances and giving women more autonomy to manage their own lives. When women are empowered, entire families benefit, along with future generations.
Women and adolescent girls need greater agency, choice and access in order to have more decision-making and bodily autonomy over their sexual and reproductive health and rights. When women and adolescent girls live free of discrimination and violence and have the capacity to take action and pursue their goals, they are exercising their agency. When they have the power to exercise choice, they can chart their own decisions about their lives and bodies. When they have access to acceptable, accessible, available and quality services, they survive and thrive. UNFPA will support these efforts through identifying pathways of change to gender equality that will enhance and accelerate agency, choice and access. UNFPA also identifies Gender Transformative Approaches and a Human Rights Based Approach as the basis of all of its programmes and as an accelerator of its Strategic Plan.

Equity: Equity ensures that all individuals, regardless of their social, economic, demographic, or geographic background are afforded the same opportunities. It is the belief that no one is less than nor should they have poorer life chances based on where they come from, the way the were raised, what they believe, or whether they have a disability. Likewise, equality in healthcare is the belief that all individuals, regardless of their background, receive the same treatment with respect to health determinants, access to resources needed to improve and maintain health, or health outcomes. Health inequality entails a failure to avoid or overcome inequalities that infringe on fairness and human rights norms.
UN Women and UNFPA Indonesia opened applications for Comedy for Equality on 30 October 2021. The brief asked comics interested in gender equality to submit a short video clip or script of an original joke they had devised.
