Ayoung man raised in Thailand returns to Korea under a false identity to work in the Blue House... and enact some serious vigilante justice against the people responsible for his father's death. But when he falls for one of the other Blue House agents, his plans get complicated.
Two agents survive the blast, LEE JIN-PYO (left) and PARK MU-YEOL, best friends and spies in an anti-North Korean unit. In horror, they take in the carnage of their compatriots in the wake of the blast.
Back home, a secret council of five high-ranking government officials receives reports that point to North Korean involvement, and try to decide what to do. The most decisive among them is CHOI EUNG-CHAN (below right, the future president), who leads the group in deciding that this is an act of war and a counterattack is in order.
However, for political reasons that involve South Korean relations with foreign nations, their plans to assassinate North Korean officials in Pyongyang must remain between the five of them. Not even the president will be made aware of this black ops mission.
The black ops team successfully infiltrates Pyongyang dressed as North Korean soldiers and assassinates their targets efficiently. Mission complete, they make their way offshore to await pickup, which arrives in the form of a submarine.
And yet, at the same time in Seoul, the council of five is informed that the president has taken the official stance that South Korea will not retaliate against the Burma attack. That means they must disavow knowledge of any state-sponsored act of war, but worse yet, in order to tie up loose ends, they must forsake their own. Choi Eung-chan is horrified, because he has sent those men out on an honorable mission and strongly opposes the idea of turning their backs on them. He accuses his colleagues of only caring to protect their own positions of power.
He chases the three remaining gangsters through the fields, trying to fire and run at the same time. But when a telltale click goes off under his foot, he immediately stills, recognizing the ominous sound of a land mine being activated by his weight.
He fades into unconsciousness but survives, and throughout his pain-fueled recovery, Jin-pyo is assailed with flashbacks of his life, begging his friend not to die while also apologizing to his wife.
I was SO surprised when i watched it because it wasn't "shitty".
And then i thought, maybe this will get recapped at DB since it's actually kinda...good (and of course cause it has Lee Min Ho in it).
What are you going to do, JB? I can sense your love for this boy, which rivals my love for this boy. Surely you can't this drama slip by the wayside. So just chew lots of chocolate-covered javabeans and get to recapping sixteen dramas at once.
All joking aside, excellent, excellent recap. I was hoping for your sake that the first episode would be totally shit so you could catch a break by default. Alas, 'twas not to be. After all my incessant mocking, I might have to admit that I was wrong and say that this drama is, you know, GOOD. What are you going to do, Beanie-unni???
thanx for the recaps!!!I jut felt weird reading the recaps while listening to ICE CREAM IS LOVE..hahahha...just soo weird..(humming...Ice Cream and Saram..dubi dubi dudu)try it...so weird, like watching action and eating cotton candy...eheheh
Haha! Wouldn't it be something if LDH's new drama would beat out YEH's most anticipated comeback? Though they are of different genres, and Miss Ripley is on the bottom of most people's lists, they would air on the same day and same timeslot and I really look forward to the ratings starting next week.
I've noticed that those with crappy teaser trailers are doing very well now (ex. Best Love). I was excited about LTM because of the fun and zippy teasers and look how that turend out. Yeah, really hope Miss Ripley has a good writer even though I don't like the cast too and I'm mostly into rom-coms.
Oh man, now it looks like I'll have to check this out too! Gwarrrrr!! I wish there were more hours in the day just so I could watch all my dramas. Forget about going outside and smelling the roses, I'm inside drooling over insanely hot men and growing paler by the minute.
thank you very much jb, I am waiting for this the whole day. I always opening this site just to see if you recapped it already. I am glad that you like it. For me, I really really love this action drama.
this sounds like what I thought athena would be like. I'm lucky because I can read the recaps now and watch it later when it comes out on us tv. which should be in about 4 weeks ( 49 days is up episode 13 and 14 this week). by that time I'll have forgotten most of it. I love my memory!!!!
The first episode exceeds my expectation for this drama.
Great storyline, fantastic cinematography, the best actors i think " Le Min HO Bio Dad & the one who raise him" and of course Lee Min Ho who doesn't disappoint me. Hope it will continue or surpass todays episode. Thanks JB for the recap. I watched the raw and still hooked in this drama.
If I were you guys, I wouldn't know if this is what I would want to write about. Revenge for the sake of revenge is tough stuff to string along for 16 hours. In the movie Munich, they had to kill more people, and it only lasted 3 hours!
I guess that's why we have a goofy side-kick, a DA, and a bodyguard, to say nothing of the vet.
I agree about how great this looks. JB said "dark and atmospheric."
The slow mo action scenes worked well in hiding featuring LMHot's stunt skills. They edited in a way to give us the impression that he looked cool, when if we watched this in real time, he would have looked pedestrian. If they can do that the whole time without us seeing the strings holding the puppet, it'll be fine.
I am so so sad that Park Sang Min had to disappear so early. I would ADORE seeing that pair have conversations a la MKIKSS or the US film Frequency. The father, for whom the revenge tolls, as advisor or cheering-on-er could be a nice touch and very touching. Especially with PSM's handsome, staid and earnest face across from beautiful, conflicted and emotional LMHot's. Think about it, the father's motivation was clean: country, honor, family. The son's is the opposite.
Its funny how all the may dramas with the most hype (with the exception of BL) have not lived up to expectations and the dramas that almost got slated are turning out well.
The verdicts on LTM, BFB, RT, manny, BL and now city hunter are out. All that is left is Ripley in a few days.
City hunter got 10% rating which is good i think. I think i will watch this.
Personal taste did not utilize LMH enough but i think he will do just fine here.
THank you JB and looking forward to you Paeksang Award Post!
please continue recaping this drama! i live vicariously through these recaps when i don't have time to watch the episode. I usually load up the recap on my phone and read it on the way to uni on the train
I really like this first episode. The hour flew because I was very entertained. At first I tought it was too much set up, but when I got to the submarine part, I understand where they were going.
Lee Min-ho is very good in the character. My image of him when he acts was built by watching Personal Taste, reading your recaps of BBF and watching some videos of it. I was very pleased and a little surprised
to watch him playing, smiling running and kicking ass because Ive never seen him like that. We lose that by the end of the episode (obvious reasons) but I hope that something of his 17 Yoon-sung remains in him and sometimes floats to the surface,
Yes, the revenge plots are good, because first we will see the first ones fall and there will be a point (im sure) when he will doubt, and major decisions will have to be made. I have a few complains, tho. Why skinny pink pants? WHY? He loves them. In the photos you posted he wears them a lot. And the hair...well, He is hot even with that hair.
I loved the sound of the water in the submarine part. It was a tense and sad scene but it had appeal. I think the colors and the water, I dont know, Im not good at technical stuff.
Im anxious for episode two. please City Hunter, dont fail me.
Darn.. and here i was thinking that flag from the blow-up scene in the beginning looked familiar... but i was like.. Nah, can't be...I guess my Hangul is still a bit beginner. Man, I miss Yangon.. rather the whole country.. Happy to see it partake in a K-drama though. It was a good surprise.
I watched this unsubbed yesterday and was pleasantly surprised. Even without understanding the dialog the story was clear, richly told and emotionally evocative. I am definitely going watch to see what comes next.
omg,,,,,its so good........ thanks you very much,,javabeans for your wonderful recaps....... lee min ho is so hot....... i fall in love with city hunter... n i love dramabeans very much for all koreadrama recaps.............. thanks your............
Oh my!!! I love you!!!!! ^___^ I've read other recaps of episode 1, but i only understood the whole thing through yours!! I'm so happy you decided to recap this!!!
I watched the first episode raw.. but the only thing I absorbed is: Minho is a hottttttttttieeeeeeee!!!
LOL.. I suck in korean.. THAAAAAAANKKKKK YOUUUUUU!!!
I actually prefer this revenge/action vibe to any of the other choices offered by the various promo posters like melodramatic romance or workplace comedy. I'm already getting my comedy dose from the other wed/thus kdramas. And I'm such a sucker for a taut revenge story. It actually reminded me a little of the Time of Dog and Wolf. Which is a good thing since that kdrama had lots of action and crazy cliff hangers at the end of many episodes. But now I too, am in a similar predicament as javabeans. I'm starting my internship next week which means watching all three kdramas will probably be impossible. What to do, what to do......
On the car ride, Nana squirms at the level of very public foreplay going on in the backseat, missing out on the fact that all Yoon-sung seems to be doing is staring in the rearview mirror at HER. Um, awkward.
