Hello from Columbus Community Hospital Rehabilitative Services in
Columbus, NE. I recently attended the Columbus Downtown Run Around 5
mile and 2 mile race and picked up information about CCC Hastings 2011
Ram Run & Walk set for September 10, 2011.
This will be a great race you won’t want to miss. It is a competitive
race for all abilities and for differently-abled entrants with teams
as well. Inspired by Team Hoyt, Dick and Rick Hoyt, we’d like to put
competitive runners and wheelchair running teams side by side for this
Race. We are expecting very a exciting finish-line atmosphere inside
Memorial Stadium at Pawnee Park.
Details:
October is Physical Therapy Month but it’s not too early to start
preparing for Columbus Community Hospital Rehabilitative Services’ We
Can Run, Walk & Roll 5K & 1 Mile Event in Columbus Saturday, October
15th, 2011!
In the spirit of the commitment and compassion seen in the real life
story of Team Hoyt (Dick & Rick Hoyt, (
www.teamhoyt.com), we have been
inspired to present this great community event to eliminate the
barriers of physical disabilities and allow competitors of all levels
and abilities to race together. Our goal is to dispel the common
perception of disability from the minds of all participants and to
promote community wellness while providing a race that is for everyone
from beginners to competitive runners, joggers and walkers. It
includes the opportunity for individuals using wheelchairs to compete
individually or with the assistance of a team of up to 3 pushers
during the race.
That makes the We Can 5K & 1 Mile Event perfect for you to enter and
participate. Even if someone has never entered a race like this
before, this is just the event to jumpstart healthy activities and
help train with a purpose toward some great goals.
Where? Pawnee Park West, finishing at Memorial Stadium, in Columbus,
NE
When? Saturday, October 15, 2011, 10:00 am
What and Why? The race will cover the typical 5K (3.1 mile) distance
through our community’s park and include a 1 mile distance as an
option for entrants. Both distances will have an exciting finish on
the track at Memorial Stadium. Entrants can run, walk or roll by
wheelchair to the finish of either distance. Awards will be given to
top finishers in several categories.
The We Can Run, Walk & Roll 5K & 1 Mile Event is brought to you by the
therapists and staff of Columbus Community Hospital’s Rehabilitation
Services Department, Premier Physical Therapy and Wiggles & Giggles
Therapy for Kids™.
Commitment and Compassion are part of the Core Values of Columbus
Community Hospital. In Rick Hoyt we see the very face of patients who
come to us. We see the potential they CAN achieve with someone
committed to be behind them, giving them life and encouragement and
abilities they couldn't achieve without someone’s commitment to them.
In Dick Hoyt we see his inspired and inspiring human commitment to
his son.
Compassion moved the younger Hoyt, at age 15, with Cerebral Palsy from
birth, to desire to participate in a 5-mile benefit run for a
paralyzed Lacrosse player who was injured in an accident. Rick and
his father Dick have never stopped running since. Along their
inspiring journey for over 30 years, they have competed in literally
more than 1,000 races, including several marathons and IronMan™
triathlons, and moved literally millions of people to see the
potential of commitment and compassion. Their message is simple yet
inspiring: "Yes you can."
We hope for this Event to be meaningful for every entrant, every
volunteer and every spectator and for it to grow annually to an Event
you won’t want to miss in our community.
Proceeds from the Event will go toward the purchase of special
equipment including wheelchairs or jogging strollers to be loaned for
this annual race or checked out by families to participate in other
races like it.
