FYI, Danielle Houtz (Mongo's mom), saw this same rabbit YESTERDAY and was EXTREMELY concerned. Said the eye looked really bad. I pushed back on the inspector as much as I could while still being fairly polite, but I don't know if anything will happen...

Mark,

We have two reports to the contrary, weepy eyes, skittish, in distress/discomfort, and concerned customers and store employees. May I ask the criteria on which this animal was evaluated? Was it the black lop in question? Our witnesses relayed that immediate veterinary attention was needed.

I don't mean to call into question the department of agriculture or your inspectors, I know you have a lot on your plates and handle several cases. Please let me know any information that you're able to share.

Thank you very much for taking my complaint seriously and acting so quickly, I really appreciate it!

Best,
Shelley

Shelly,  The inspector checked on the rabbit that you were concerned about.  This store is licensed to sell rabbits as pets and the hutches are designed to house rabbits.  The rabbit is not showing any signs of illness or discomfort.

Thanks for your observations,

Mark

Mark, thank you!

If there is any concern for the welfare of the rabbit, please let me know OR I encourage you to contact the Georgia House Rabbit Society if the rabbit gets impounded. Their number is 678-653-7175 and email is in...@houserabbitga.com

Thank you again!

Hi Mark,

I'm a concerned citizen!

There is a rabbit, black with lop ears (they hang down - floppy ears, etc), who is at the Pet Supplies Plus at 191 Alps Road in Athens, GA 30606

Phone number is 706-353-0650.

The rabbit has an eye infection that is being left untreated. He's also on a wire floor, which is very bad for his feet. He seems to be in pain/discomfortable from this eye infection. There are other rabbits being sold at this location as well.

Can someone please check on this poor rabbit? Who else can I email or call about this?

Thank you!

Shelley

If the inspector won't do anything, can one of us see if we can talk the pet store into letting us take him?  Or even buy him, just to get him out of there since he is sick?

Sorry  we can't buy him or take him in.  The store needs to be responsible for their animals.  They have to be called to accountability - anyone can call or speak to a manager with concerns.  Take a photo of the eye and send to Dr. Colby and see what he says.  If someone goes in there call the manager over and show them the eye and tell them why it needs attention.

Great idea about taking pictures and sending to Dr. Colby!  And I see what you are saying and understand that about what needs to happen.

Shelley, since this store is in Athens, do you think Danielle could take a picture?
