I have been using kinkless since it gets my job done, but talk about a
kluge!
Today I came across GhostAction and have tested it all day long. It
really fits my needs better than all the others, if you include the
need for a simple but workable interface. What works for me:
1) Reading/writing iCal (which I then sync with my Palm). I can't
tell you how many others do a partial job of syncing.
2) Regarding iCal - I love the way a project name is included in the
action title. With the others, I can't tell you how often I'd look at
an iCal todo, but couldn't remember what the title referred to (which
project). GhostAction solves that problem nicely.
3) That little calendar! So many other apps require me to type in a
due data (some of the more sophisticated ones let me enter something
like "next week"). Having a calendar where I can click on a date is
sooo much more streamlined!
4) The overall simplicity of the app! It's very much like EasyTask,
but without EasyTask's sync-back-from-iCal problems.
What additions I'd like (most are minor, though):
1) Having a start date in addition to a due date. If the start date
hasn't occurred yet, then the action is not synced to iCal. I found a
simple work-around; for all actions that I don't want to appear in
iCal yet, I assign them to the @unassigned context, and in iCal I keep
that calendar unchecked.
2) Having hierarchical projects (projects within projects). I rarely
need this, but for very large projects made up of a number of
subprojects, it would be nice to allow subprojects. Again, this is
quite a minor addition for me, and it may not work well with
GhostAction's current architecture.
3) Having QuickSilver integration. I've just tried High Priority,
but it tells me I have no iCal calendars (yes, I have lots of
calendars - I've emailed the author for help). I think High Priority
would be a nice way to add to dos, quickly. But QuickSilver is handy
in so many situations. Many of the other GTD apps I've tried have QS
integration.
If you've tried Midnight's Inbox, you'll probably salivate over its
ability to suck in emails and turn the ones you want into actions.
Too bad that app is so full of bugs, is totally incomprehensible (and
there's virtually no documentation)., and has probably more features
than I need.
So, congratulations to the author of GhostAction. Well done! And to
others who have just found out about GA and are reading this forum,
please give it a try.

Start dates will be implemented in a future version of Ghost Action.

Sub-projects might happen in a future release if I can solve it
without compromising the simplicity or usability of Ghost Action.
However, there are plenty of other improvements that will happen first.

Also a planned feature.

Some kind of email and action integration might be a future direction
for Ghost Action, but it's not going to happen in the near future,
because there are many other basic things to fix first.

I'd just like to support some earlier requests:
Start dates: I look forward to seeing these, too. At the moment the
lists in my projects are so long it's overwhelming. Hiding some would
be really useful.
Re-ordering actions within a project: Often the actions needed in my
projects don't have specific start and end dates, but they do have
some intrinsic ordering. I find assigning the 1-9 scale priorities
fiddly and ad hoc. It would be great to be able to just drag actions
up and down.
Sub-projects: Like everyone else, I'd hate to see Ghost Action
compromise its simplicity. But like pvonk, I do have a few
hierarchical projects. (I'm an academic, and large research projects
consisting of sub-tasks fall into this category). As a work around,
I've created projects with prefixes eg. "LCS reading", "LCS
measurements", "LCS presentations". But being able to see all these
subgroups in one pane if I choose would help to clarify links between
subprojects, and check there's no duplication.
Thanks for the great work.
