TitanStation, colloquially known as the Sprawl, was an EarthGov space station built into the last remaining fragment of Titan, one of Saturn's moons and the site of the first planet crack in the 2440s. Titan Station itself encircled the Shard of Titan as a large metropolis, with inner structures such as schools, malls, skyscrapers, and a Unitologist church. The population of the station exceeded one million people.
The Titan Station Security Force was the law enforcement on Titan Station. Project Telomere, an EarthGov research program studying Marker-related phenomena, was established in the station's Government Sector around 2508.
Public Sector took the form of a large semicircle surrounding the Titan Shard, with large towering buildings and structures on its upper and lower sides (the lower side was known as the inverted city, and the two were connected via gravity-adjusting elevators). The most notable structures of this Sector were the Titan Memorial Medical Center, the Titan Heights apartment complex, The Concourse shopping mall, the Cassini Towers apartment complex, the Church of Unitology, the Titan Elementary School, the Solar Array, and the CEC Facility.
Government Sector was located above the Titan Mines, on the Titan Shard. The Government Sector housed a Shuttleport, the EarthGov offices and a research lab, which was being used as a Marker research and manufacturing plant. The facility contained Project Telomere, which was responsible for research into the Site 12 Marker and several other Red Marker replicas. Isaac Clarke and Ellie Langford used a drilling machine to breach the Government Sector, allowing Necromorphs in from the Titan Mines.
In the early 25th century, Titan, a moon orbiting Saturn, was selected as the site of the first "moon harvest" - an early form of Planet Cracking. A large colony was established on the surface of the moon to study its geology and prepare it for mining. The moon was successfully cracked and 'harvested' by the 2440s, satisfying the immense resource needs of humanity, who believed their extinction was imminent.
Titan's harvest was halted for unknown reasons before the entire moon was dissasembled, leaving the small shard where the colony had started. As planet cracking became more common, the station experienced rapid growth as it functioned as both a critical research outpost and a way station for deep space mining operations, quickly expanding with busy malls and streets filled with commerce and fleeting visitors, as well as supporting a growing cityscape of its own.
Titan Station felt the effects of the USG Ishimura incident in the years leading up to the Necromorph outbreak of 2511, due to the decline of the planet cracking industry. Unemployment rose as both mining support services and the CEC posted heavy quarterly losses.[5]
Over the course of three years after Isaac Clarke was rescued from his escape shuttle, Director Hans Tiedemann and his lead scientists committed Isaac and Nolan Stross to the Medical Center. While committed there, the blueprints and codes of the Marker were extracted from their brains, and using this information, Isaac and Stross were used by Tiedemann to construct a monumental Marker so he could obtain its power. After its completion, many citizens, especially children, became anxious and violent outbreaks of homicide and suicide were committed like before on the USG Ishimura and Aegis VII.[7][8][9]
Thanks to the efforts of a Unitologist group led by Daina Le Guin, a sabotage operation in the Government Sector undertaken by Karrie Norton unleashed the first Necromorphs. While these Necromorphs were initially contained within the Government Sector as Karrie realized what her actions had caused and attempted to fix her mistake, she was further manipulated by the Unitologists and unintentionally released the creatures into the Public Sector.
The Necromorph infection spared no one, butchering families and children indiscriminately. Martial law was declared by Director Tiedemann, who also (against previously set protocol for any sort of Necromorph outbreak) ordered the station to begin evacuations; it is unknown how many people actually managed to be evacuated before the Public Sector was declared "beyond acceptable recovery conditions".
During this time, Isaac Clarke managed to elude Tiedemann's forces, resulting in Tiedemann cutting off power and life support to the Transport Hub in an effort to deter Clarke from reaching the Government Sector and destroying the Marker. When this gambit failed due to Isaac reactivating the decommissioned solar arrays for the station, Tiedemann resorted to directing the focused beam of energy from the solar array to slice through all of the connections between the civilian areas of the Sprawl and the Shard, effectively cutting the Sprawl in two.
This once again failed to halt Isaac's progress, who proceeded to use the gravity tethers of the docked USG Ishimura to drag the Shard back towards the rest of the Sprawl, allowing him access. Once on the Shard, Isaac and Ellie Langford managed to penetrate the EarthGov compound via a mining drill, which also allowed the Necromorphs to infiltrate the facility. Isaac was almost killed by a large group of EarthGov soldiers blocking his way further into the station, but managed to avoid them and proceeded to cut the power to the area, which opened the doors and let in a massive horde of Necromorphs, including a Regenerator-type Necromorph known as the Ubermorph, which then overwhelmed and slaughtered the barricade of EarthGov soldiers. The mass of invading Necromorphs were able to reach the Marker, triggering a Convergence Event, which was halted at the last moment by Isaac destroying the Marker through mentally fighting a hallucination of his long dead girlfriend, Nicole Brennan.
In the end, the damage caused to the Sprawl by the massive release of energy from the Marker's destruction, along with all the other damage it had sustained, destabilized the station's reactors, causing a meltdown. Shortly after, the Sprawl was completely and utterly destroyed by the ensuing explosions. The Titan Station disaster caused a crisis for EarthGov as anti-government sentiments drastically increased among the general population.[10]
A two-story shopping mall located in the heart of the Sprawl. The stores were locked down when Isaac arrived, and the many abandoned shopping bags and pools of blood indicated that the Necromorphs attacked during normal operation hours.
An apartment complex on Titan Station. Unlike Titan Heights, the Towers seemed to be inhabited mostly by Unitologists. In the center of the two apartment wings, there were four statues dedicated to Unitology. One of them was a large Marker statue that stood close to the window, and south of it were three masked Unitologist statues. Behind the three statues was an entrance to the Church of Unitology.
Titan Station - colloquially known as The Sprawl - is the central location of Dead Space 2. This civilian space station was built into the last remaining fragment of Saturn's moon Titan after the moon was planet-cracked. Titan Station itself encircles the Shard of Titan as a large metropolis, with inner structures such as schools, malls, skyscrapers, and a Unitologist church. The station supported a population of over a million, virtually all of whom perished during the events of Dead Space 2.
Following the Second Aegis VII Incident, CEC engineer Isaac Clarke was brought to the Sprawl so that EarthGov could conduct experiments on him in order to produce a new Marker. Isaac endured a horrific three years in custody as he was regularly questioned regarding his experiences aboard the USG Ishimura and his contact with the Red Marker on Aegis VII, while the whole time the researchers working under the orders of Sprawl commander Hans Tiedemann probed Isaac's mind for Marker codes. With Isaac's unwilling aid, the Site 12 Marker was built and Tiedemann intended to harness its power.
Of course, after the Marker was completed, widespread anxiety and depression ensued among the Sprawl's population, with mass violence quickly following. Homicides and suicides occurred frequently, and soon after the victims of these horrific occurrences would become Necromorphs. The station descended into mass hysteria as the Necromorphs multiplied and committed wholesale slaughter.
As the outbreak progressed, Isaac Clarke was released from the Medical Center and managed to escape amid the chaos. As well as the Necromorphs, he also had to contend with Tiedemann's forces who were determined to end him as he now posed a significant threat: as the man responsible for making the Gold Marker's construction possible, it was within Isaac's power to destroy it.
Isaac was joined by fellow inmate Nolan Stross, a survivor of the Necromorph outbreak aboard the USG O'Bannon, and also Ellie Langford, a CEC engineer. While Isaac believed that Stross would be essential to destroy the Marker as he also had a hand in its creation, Stross proved to be a liability due to the advanced stage of his Marker-induced insanity. The closer the trio got to the Marker site, the more unstable Stross became until he attacked Ellie, gouging out one of her eyes. A while later, he confronted Isaac and tried to kill him, but Isaac overpowered him and put him down.
Using a mining derrick, Isaac and Ellie breached the Shard, though parted ways afterwards after Ellie boarded an escape shuttle and Isaac remotely commanded it to take off. He continued onward with only a Marker-induced apparition of his dead girlfriend Nicole Brennan accompanying him, breaching Tiedemann's defence perimeter and allowing his remaining troops to be overrun by Necromorphs as the horde converged on the Marker.
When Isaac eventually reached the Marker, it was surrounded by Necromorphs as the monolith sent out a signal pulse to begin Convergence. Standing at the foot of the structure within the dead space field was Tiedemann who attempted to kill Isaac, but Isaac overpowered Tiedemann and shot him with his own Javelin Gun. Now in proximity to the Marker, Isaac was once again greeted by the apparition of Nicole which proclaimed that he now had to die. As the creator of the Marker, Isaac's body would be the last to be absorbed during the Convergence. Within Isaac's own mindscape, the tortured engineer fought against the malicious spectre of Nicole and destroyed her, breaking his link to the Marker and stopping the Convergence. This caused the Marker to stop functioning and begin to crumble, but the damage caused to the Sprawl by the Marker's gravity pulse left the station on the brink of collapse. As the Shard dome began to fall apart around him, Isaac waited for death, but suddenly Ellie's shuttle returned, breaching the dome in order to rescue him. Isaac boarded the shuttle and he and Ellie fled as the Sprawl was rocked by multiple explosions.
