I'm currently staying in a studio so the fridge is close to the bed. Unfortunately the fridge is quite loud, which is slightly annoying during the day but can make it hard to sleep during the night. I could of course turn off the fridge altogether, but I have food inside that I'd like to keep refrigerated.

Update #2: the fridge's compressor ended up breaking down completely a couple of days after, so I've received a replacement fridge which is a lot more quiet. So looks like something was wrong with that fridge after all.

...[O]ne should be careful with foods that spoil particularly quickly e.g. raw fish, or unpasteurised/lightly-pasteurised milk. E.g. I would trust typical US supermarket milk for a few nights like this, but not farm-bought milk or UK supermarket milk.

In a pay/per/night kind of establishment like a hotel, go to the front desk and complain. They should be able to accommodate you (either by moving you to a new room or by swapping the fridge or by reimbursing you some amount).

In a landlord kind of establishment like an apartment, inform your landlord. Unless stated otherwise in your contract (US only, IDK about other countries), the landlord is responsible for the general working upkeep of appliances in the apartment.

I've been in apartments where the fridge was crap, and I got a better one off of the local paper / exchange / whatever for cheap. The landlord had always approved the swap for a newer, better model. (But make sure you get permission! Because you can lose your deposit, among other, worse, things if you do it without first getting approval.)

In the first case, listen to the machine to determine where the noise is coming from. It could simply be that the compressor is causing something to rattle, such as one of the refrigerant lines to knock against the housing. If that is the case, only a very small push or pull to bend the line a little away from the thing it is contacting is all that is needed to quiet it.

Fortunately, the lines are very malleable and are designed to bend. Don't be aggressive, though. Just push it only enough to prevent it from striking the frame. If you break it you are liable, and any competent professional who looks at it will know full well that you broke it if you do. And a refrigerant leak is not your friend.

Check the laws of the country you're staying in. A particularly loud fridge that keeps you from sleeping might be a reason for reimbursement of parts of the payment or the contract in total. With that go to the desk and tell them the fridge is too loud they need to replace it otherwise you refuse payment.
By German law this would enable you to reimburse.

3M earplugs in 50/100 boxes for next to nothing and I wear them every day, it's just a habit. go to bed, forgot earplugs? run and get them, sleep perfectly. I wear them all day sometimes, out in the street, in the car, I don't notice I still have them... For sleep they are especially essential. If it's only a noisy fridge, sell it to someone who will put it in a basement and buy another one with a low Db rating, or keep the old one and switch it back when you leave and sell the new one. if the earplugs get tarnished put them in soap water they work many times, you can even find what oil people put on them because they come impregnated with silicon oil or someting.

I do not suggest ear plugs when staying in a rented place(hotel/motel/hostel/B&B) as you do not know the other tenants or employees and their ethics...and I want to be woken up if someone comes in the room or an alarm sounds/gunshots in the hallway, etc...

If you do not have much food, it is often possible to put the food on the window shelf from the outer side for the night. and switch the refrigerator off. For the day, when it may be much warmer and you may not like the food to be visible from outside, you can put it back into the fridge. It works better if you have as single plastic box for all food that stands reliable on the shelf and closes well.

After we left, I also tweeted Marriott and expressed my discontent about the situation and the manager of the hotel reached out via email and offered me 5,000 Marriott points which was a nice touch after the fact, though I wish the hotel would have done more to make us a priority during the situation itself.

What do you get when you take a seemingly ordinary kid and throw him into the bad place? Lincoln Loud finds himself working at a hotel in the depths of Hell itself helping sinners try to find redemption as well as a way home. But perhaps there's more to his situation than meets the eye.

It can be read here. This fanfic provides examples of:

  • Actor Allusion: When Charlie tells the Hotel crew that Lincoln may be "The One", a skeptical Husk remarks "If it's true, I'm a newt king from a land of frogs."
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Cherri Bomb makes her debut in Chapter 4 before the fanfic version of "Welcome to Heaven".
  • Affably Evil: Cherri Bomb is a Mad Bomber and proud of it, but she's perfectly friendly to Lincoln.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Valentino sees Angel kiss Lincoln as a friend and concludes that the porn star is into kids, lamenting that they could have made porn about it if he'd learned this earlier.
  • Cool Big Sis: Charlie dotes on Lincoln, treating him like a kid brother. He, in turn, is completely devoted to helping her achieve her goals.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Lincoln's voice message to his friend Clyde in the first chapter mirrors a certain princess of Hell trying to find support from her Mom when she tries to contact her in the pilot.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Vaggie is staunchly loyal to Charlie and isn't unsympathetic towards Lincoln's dilemma, but she still expects him to earn his keep while staying at the hotel (via sprucing the place up and helping with ad campaigns) and is unflinchingly strict with him.
  • Nice Guy: Lincoln. He wholeheartedly embraces Charlie's vision, and is disgusted by the vicious lack of respect her subjects have towards her.
  • No-Respect Guy: Charlie is the princess of Hell, but her subjects treat her with open contempt, to Lincoln's astonishment and outrage.
  • Spit Take: Husk spits out his beer when Lincoln reveals Lisa's age, following with a Big "WHAT?!". Later, when Lincoln finally mentions how many siblings he has, Husk does it again.

(The sisters all gathered around to read the message. It read, "Hey guys, it's Lincoln. We wanted to message you guys something. You see, there is a big storm coming towards the hotel. So because of that, I will be staying here for a few more days. Oh, and this doesn't count as a call, so the bet's still going on. Love, Lincoln.")

(The sisters rushed upstairs and grabbed Lori's phone. She dialed Lincoln's number and put it on speaker. They waited for a few seconds, then... they heard the voice they wanted to hear from the phone)

Lincoln: Well, the past few days have been so much fun! The staff were really nice people, giving me food, drinks, and help whenever I needed it. There was this great water park, with slides, guns, and a giant bucket to tip water all over you! The food was great too, and the games in the hotel were nice too! My bed is great, the view is amazing, and I can get free Wi-Fi here!

Lincoln: Yup. Even though I've had an amazing time, sometimes I felt a little bit bored without you guys around. Everytime I did something, it kept reminding me of you guys. When I went swimming in the pool, it sorta reminded me of the time I went to the resort with Lori.

(Over the next hour, Lincoln continued to tell his sisters about all the things he did during his stay at the hotel. The sisters were all so happy to hear Lincoln talking to them, and they couldn't wait for him to come home tomorrow)

(The girls then heard a car pull up outside the house. They remained patient. Until, the door slowly opened, and in came Lincoln with his suitcase. As soon as Lincoln saw the sisters, he threw his arms back)

(The sisters cheer from this. So Lincoln spent the whole day spending some time with each of his sisters, and making them all happy with his presence. Towards the end of the day, all the sisters sat on the couch with Lincoln sitting in the middle. They all snuggled with Lincoln, with both them and Lincoln happy to be together again)

And while noise topped the list of irritants cited by respondents to a 2011 J.D. Power and Associates North America Hotel Guest Satisfaction Index Study, most travelers soon learn to tune out the most common sources of hotel room noise.

Hotels enforce quiet hours so that all guests can enjoy a restful night. Sometimes, though, guests ignore the rules and make noise well past midnight, disturbing everyone else on the floor. If you find yourself next to noisy neighbours, know that you have options.

Front desk can dispatch security to deal with noise complaints. Before calling for help, though, consider the nature of the noise. For instance, a crying baby or obnoxious snoring cannot really be helped, so what will complaining achieve? Conversely, barking dogs, parties, shouting and loud intimate moments are valid complaints.

Because I planned to wake up quite early the next morn, I went to bed immediately following Angel (and a superbly creepy ep it was!) at 10 p.m. eastern. Just as I turned out my light (and figured out all those pillows) I heard the occupant of the neighboring room enter their door. Immediately followed by the sound of their cell phone ringing. They then had the nerve to actually engage in a phone conversation in a hotel room! Can you believe it?

Like I said, this person undoubtedly had no idea how clearly their voice was carrying into the next room. And I am sure their friends consider them friendly, entertaining company with their generous and ready laugh. But lying in the dark with my teeth clenched, wanting only to fall asleep, such complimentary characterizations did not spring to mind.
