Good morning
Its interesting you brought up the name of Sam Jonah.

Someone said to me,
MR Sam Jonah, defines GREED of the African , this guy , according to credible sources has riped Ghana off big time.

He sold off Ashanti Gold "dead cheap" to the British and South African mining giants, took his cut and run off .

He now owns a very exclusive one million pounds property, in the most exclusive residential area of London.

According to treasury records he bought the property for 700, 000 pounds.

Where did he get the money from ,at the time when he was working for a State owned company , Ashanti Gold Company????

What did the poor people of obuasi , Ashanti ,get out of this deal i hear you ask?

If you go to Obuasi, Ashanti which has mined majority of Ghana, s Gold since 1890 you would weep for the people.

Guess what, all this happened during the reign of Chairman Rawlings.

I shall send you the link later

Regards

Ps we are supposed to be tolerant and give all these to Some God!

You guys give it to God , if you want Some of us will fight for Justice.

Steve,

The Rawlings generation, no offense to the very rare entrepreneurial ones, simply want to reap where they have not sowed.

I have never seen such a generation like that! Selfish, greedy and fast talking! You should see some of the Legon boys!

Crooked means to earn their fast buck! I had a chance to work with some in 2008, and I wish Fred will have his chance and report back to us. It is easy to start a company in America and hire people, ten times easier than in Ghana even though some think people are looking for jobs!

The generation behind will see less of the Science and Engineering and more of those trying to get into Banking and Finance and Economics, because that is where the chances are for making money in Ghana, as the kids see these phony capitalists whose output or products are shady at best, siding with political parties in order to earn gargantuan gains.

Sad for a nation Kwame Nkrumah and others sacrificed their lives to bring about. After all of them, the big 6, could have fronted the Foreign firms and become rich like Sam Johan did helping the British control the mining enterprise and finally taking over the full Ashanti Gold.

Tweaaaa!!

K. Danso

A teenager obsessed with designer labels was given a birthday cake in the shape of a Louis Vuitton handbag after she helped steal £150,000 from a string of bank accounts, a court heard.
Aamna Aliani, 18, bought Christian Louboutin shoes, Dolce & Gabbana clothes and dozens of handbags on an incredible spending spree.
The teenager, together with accomplices Derrick Mensah, 20, and David Kwarteng, 27, hijacked confidential credit and debit card details from 22 Lloyds TSB customers before they hit the shops.

Jailed: Aamna Aliana was one of a trio of fraudsters who splashed out on a wardrobe-full of designer clothing after siphoning off almost £150,000 from a string of bank accounts

They blew tens of thousands of pounds at Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Prada stores in London's exclusive Mayfair.
Thousands of pounds in cash were also withdrawn from bank branches in Hammersmith, west London; High Road and Cranbrook Road in Ilford, Essex; East Gate, Harlow; Wood Green, north London; and Knightsbridge, southwest London.
Aliani also used the cash to purchase a gym membership from Fitness First for £534 while Mensah bought £200 gift vouchers from John Lewis, Southwark Crown Court heard.

The two month-long scam unravelled on May 14, 2011, when police became suspicious after spotting Kwatreng waiting in a BMW for Aliani, while she was shopping at Louis Vuitton in central London's Conduit Street.
Aliani had purchased two designer bags worth £1,130 and also had a further £860 in cash on her.
Five envelopes in the BMW were stuffed full with a total of £12,800 while the car boot was also heaving with trendy clothing.
Prosecutor Nicholas Mather said the total loss was in the region of £144,000.

'There is also the enormous inconvenience to the card holders and the banks.'
When police arrested the gang they found pictures of designer clothes, wads of cash and the handbag birthday cake which had been taken on their mobile phones.
Aliani, who was just 16 at the time of the scam, and Mensah were each sentenced to a year in prison, suspended for two years. He was also ordered to complete 240 hours unpaid work.
Kwarteng, who has previous convictions including handling stolen goods, was immediately jailed for one year. Relatives in the public gallery wept as the sentence was passed.
Mr Justice Nicol said: 'All three of you were involved in the use of replacement bank cards which the banks had been talked into sending to a false address.
'The cards were then used to withdraw cash or buy expensive items of clothing.'
Addressing Kwatreng, the judge said: 'Your offending was part of a professional operation but it was only over two days.
'The offence of possessing criminal property is intended to discourage the criminal activity which generates such property.'
Mr Justice Nicol told Aliani: 'Your role was the most serious of the three defendants and you used the cards most extensively, in total spending £22,700.
'It's clear you have had some difficulties in your family background and the lure of the lifestyle which this offending held or appeared to promise obviously proved to be too much.'
James McCrindell, for Aliani, said: 'This is someone who can be punished in the community. The focus can still be in respect of rehabilitation rather than sentence.
'At the start of her criminal conduct she was just 16, turning 17 when she was arrested. She is now 18 and has looked back on her conduct and realises she went the wrong way.
'She recognises and accepts responsibility for her offending and says she only has herself to blame. She is a good young person who, notwithstanding disadvantages, has always tried to do the right thing.'
Jeremy Ornstin, defending Kwatreng, said grew up in a 'challenging environment' but 'against the odds' is now embarking on a degree at the University of Hertfordshire.
Ray Hedlam, for Mensah, urged the judge to take a merciful course.
Aliani, of south Tottenham, north London, admitted 12 counts of fraud and possession of criminal property.
Mensah, of Newington Green, Stoke Newington, north London, admitted four counts of fraud.
Kwatreng, of Canonbury, north London admitted fraud, two counts of possessing articles for use in fraud and possession of criminal property.

Steve,
How are you going to fight for the justice.
You have to plan well, because as a
Ghanaian proverb goes, as you are looking
for a stone to throw at a bird, it is looking
for a place to jump to.

We should be cautious in what we put in the public domain that has the potential to affect the reputation of others.

The Ashanti merger was endorsed by shareholders who had access to the proposal and had enough time to review. They could have voted it down if it was not in their interest.

Sam Jonah ascended to the Ashanti Managing Director role from humbling beginnings as an Official learner just as some of us and he was commensurated as any expatriate, being nominated into the role by Lonrho at the time. Since leaving Ashanti he has taken exploration risks to develop mining projects in Liberia and other African countries that are maturing into profitable businesses. He has developed other non mining businesses with his partners across the African continent that generate many jobs. He serves on many boards and still provides advisory.

Let us not rely on hearsay and unsubstantiated facts to publish material that potentially impacts on the reputation of individuals. Good morning from Brisbane, down under.

Phillip, Steve,

The British reward their Good Old boys.

Many were handsomely rewarded during the slave trade, even selling their own kind.

I read or hard Sam Jonah went to Mining School, and I understand the British owners handpicked him and trained him in UK, and promoted him up the ladder.

He was paid like any British or Foreign Executive CEO with large base in the millions of dollars per year plus performance bonuses which is usually larger than the base. Ashanti Gold may have been on our soil but it was owned, at least managerial ownership, by the British boys. I think when AngloGold or Ashanti Gold hit the NY Stock Market Sam made good money, and eventually they lost the company through hedging losses, which later allowed the British to buy the whole company outright. I understand they bet and lost on pricing in the futures market – a high stake gambling. In all cases there is so much money CEO walk away with several million dollars in addition to whatever they have accumulated. Carly Fiorina when fired as the first female CEO, walked away with about $43 million.

When I was in high school a very old man in an Association we belonged to told us that the “British are very konning (cunning)”. He used to work for tem during the 1930s-50s. We used to make jokes about the word “konning” for years. Americans don’t use the word in normal parlance.

Steve, Philips, these boys have outsmarted us for a long time!

And now our own people in charge are selling all lock stock and barrel.

Jailed: Aamna Aliana (left) was one of a trio of fraudsters who splashed out on a wardrobe-full of designer clothing after siphoning off almost £150,000 from a string of bank accounts. Aamna Aliana, 18, is also pictured with Derek Mensah, 20, outside Southwark Crown Court

Police found this picture of Aamna Aliani's birthday cake, in the shape of a Louis Vuitton bag, on a mobile phone

The collection of Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana designer bags Aamna Aliani, 18, bought

'In short this case involves the taking over of individuals' bank accounts and the use of the credit and debit cards that are attached to those accounts.
'A memory stick was found on Kwatreng which was full of financial information relating to a number of different bank accounts.
'The information included dates of birth and addresses and confidential data such as telephone banking passwords.
'Someone has had access using the information on the memory stick to 22 individuals' bank accounts.
'The method used is identical - the bank would be telephoned and the (account holder's) address would be changed to one of two addresses in Harlow, Essex.
'The bank would then be informed that the card was damaged and a new card sent out to the false address.

Let me make some corrections in your message below.

Ashanti had an initiative called the Officials Learners Programme. It was designed to train Advance Level holders and later sponsor them to various courses. Sam Jonah went through that scheme and then got sponsored to the Camborne School of Mines in the UK. Many others went through the programme including myself.

None of us were hand picked into any managerial slots when we returned from Camborne School of Mines. When I returned for instance, I started at the bottom and went through blasting, technical assistant and gradually worked my way up. Sam also did same, working as Shiftboss, Mine Captain, Underground Manager etc before being appointed as Deputy MD and later MD.

There are still professionals in Ashanti who are graduates of the scheme including our own Prince Gaisie who took the metallurgical route. No one was handpicked and we all worked hard to justify promotions.

Hope this clarifies things.

Henry,

Thank you and I hereby remove the word handpicked.

However, let me assure you that to climb up corporate ladder, there is no
specified exam. It is not by longevity.
It is who management wants and feels comfortable in. It is based on many
factors of competence, and how you are perceived, in terms of communication,
decision-making, and an intrinsic likeability factor not unlike how some
people like Obama or some politicians even with the same party.
It is the same in America.

Thanks,

K. Danso

Prince,
Good Evening. Did you check where the allegations are coming from?

You still have not shared what you found, but for the sake of clarity please check this link. That report came out late  last year and it was not only our Richest Ghanaian alive, whose name popped up but a lot of other super  wealthy businessmen.

You can see the property (picture) if you filter through Ex Ashanti Gold Boss name in the Filter Map below.

Now This property was bought according to this report in 2003.

Did Ghana Government know he had such amount of monies?
Did he declare them when he was a Ghanaian Citizen?
Did he pay his taxes in Ghana?

What kind of assets did he declare and how much taxes did he pay to Ghana since he also uses the roads, hospitals and Ghana Police?
There are more questions, I dont have to provide answers but since you know the Guy more than us please can you anser on his behalf.

Prince these are just legitimate questions.

Please NOTE, I am not accusing Sam Jonah of anything. I am just relaying facts I have come across.

I hope you get me Right.

In Ghana we don't create Data Bases and the "thieves " get away with murder. The Ghana Government can't even collect taxes in Ghana or Safegaurd Public Funds How Sad!.

You cant do that in the fast moving world  we live in today. Every thing has a an AUDIT TRAIL .

I understand some Ghanaian Political Leaders former and Current once have also used the same means to hide their ill gotten investments using Cayman Islands and British Virgin Islands offshore companies. All these things will come out one day.

I won't name them on this forum because the evidence I have got is still NOT Cast Iron yet.

Lets all do our bit for Mother Ghana and stop following people because they have money or because they are our tribes men or kingsmen.

Lets stop the naked unfettered robbery taking place in Ghana.

It,s Ghana and all of us that suffers.

Nuff said, have a Nice Evening.

So my brother, me and you , who is PATRIOTIC????  You are Shooting the Messenger rather tha concentrating on the message and finding out more for yourself.

At least I know my eyes are not "wide shut" and believing everything.

No . Show me the EVIDENCE . Whilst at it I have my ears to the ground as well.

Offshore secrets: UK property purchases - interactive map

Properties being bought through the use of tax loopholes and the secrecy offered by the British Virgin Islands (BVI). Click on the house icons to see the approximate street-view location and details of each property. Or click on the dropdown menu to see all the properties owned by individuals investigated in our report

• This sample register of properties has been compiled from records obtained by the ICIJ in Washington. Any inaccuracies will be corrected promptly if brought to our attention. There is no suggestion that any of the listed transactions were illegal. Street views of residential properties are general panoramas of the road rather than the specific property. The owners do not necessarily reside there. Since the date of these transactions, some properties may have been transferred to other owners

Please see the Market Watch Interview link here

Naturally I was interested to find out more about the Sam Jonah Information because at the time he was alleged to have purchased the London , Regents Park Luxury Property in 2003, and allegedly subsequent others ,  Ghana's share in Ashanti Gold was being Sold to Anglo Gold. and Sam as, the Chief  CEO  and responsible for Ghana Governments share, was recommending the sale , saying Ghana must get out of Owning Gold Mining shares.

Please see link to that interview with CBS News in 2003, when he bought the London Property.

he owners of BVI companies. Britain's land registry controversially allows offshore property owners to keep their true identities secret, despite its official status as a public record.

Owners identified by the Guardian on Monday include:

• Peter Vastardis, who used legal loopholes to sell a London flat to a Latvian businessman without paying stamp duty;

• Raheem Brennerman, a 29-year-old of Nigerian extraction, who borrowed £118m from the Royal Bank of Scotland;

• A Hertfordshire businessman, Lawrie Alderman, whose BVI entity bought London office premises;

• Sir Sam Jonah, former president of Ashanti Goldfields in Ghana, who bought a luxury flat near Regents Park

• Bruce Rockowitz, billionaire head of a Hong Kong garment firm, who used a Cook Island trust as well as a BVI company

• Bobby Wahi, who said he was a United Nations "goodwill ambassador" and acquired 42 properties around Skegness, Lincolnshire before going bust;

• Andreas Stavrinides, who owns care homes and the Skylark Hotel in Southend;

• Yoram Yossifoff, an Israeli lawyer who has acquired more than £1bn of UK property for himself and clients;

• A Rotherham builder, Keith Wilson, who set up two BVI companies to carry out a barn conversion.

The Land Registry's chief executive, Malcolm Dawson, said: "Our register records the legal owner of property, both residential and commercial, whether that is an individual or a company and regardless of whether that company has been registered in the UK or not."

He said the Land Registry was to look into "our practice for capturing price paid" but had no evidence that it was being deliberately concealed.

A worldwide investigation aimed at stripping away the anonymity that binds together one of the most shadowy aspects of Britain’s financial industry: the offshore company. In a unique collaboration, the Guardian and BBC Panorama have sifted through many gigabytes of data obtained by the Washington-based International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. Among the findings was information that helped us to identify more than 20 offshore incorporation firms operating out of the UK, several of which help supply sham directors

Dear Stephen and Kwaku Danso
You are reporting of a fraud details in the news from uk information available to you
The track of bring Sam Jonah into the fray is quiet unfortunate
I arrived in Obuasi on 10th January 1984 to start work after the one close down of the universities in 1983 when we had only six weeks to complete the academic year.
We had burnt down Ashanti Goldfields Corporation buses  at the Teck junction during a change over of a NUGS leadership on UST with all leaders from the then Universities in Ghana.
Sam Jonah was born in Obuasi and was going to school here . He later went to university to Mining Engineering and came to work in obuasi.
The structure of the Mine then had a Managing Director and his deputy as UK citizens and all those appointed are automatically given the UK citizenship.
Sam Jonah was a supervisor underground an d when they had blasted an area in the underground all the walls surface was glittering gold , he radioed surface and called management to underground. They then called security and sent bags to underground to collect all the blasted material. Due this incident , he was sent to Camborne  school of Mines in Cornwall For Post gradate and business studies, after he came back and was appointed deputy managing director.
Due to the conditions stated earlier above he was given the UK citizenship.
When I arrived on the Mine the gold price was $850.00 an ounce. It descended to $230.00 an ounce and has now come to $1900.00 in September 2011 .
We have made different strategic decision until we were merged with Anglo America to create Anglogold Ashanti in may 2004. Sam Jonah was appointed Vice PRESIDENT AND POSTED TO HIS OFFICE IN SOUTH AFRICA.
He later resigned and formed Jonah Capital for projects in Africa.
His honesty underground was what elevated him to the AGC management and subsequent to Anglo Gold Ashanti.
Please next time get your facts right before bringing people who have built reputation into such fray.

So Doc,
Why oohh Why in 2003, when he was negotiating the sale of Ghana Governments shares in Anglo Gold, he buys a plush property near London's Regents Park, through an off shore company from British Virgin Islands ( WINDSOR PROPERTY HOLDINGS) to keep his identity SECRET . Why??

That is what intrigues me.

If you have evidence of wrong doing, fraud, non disclosure of taxes etc please report to the appropriate authorities. To use the forum to make allegations to individuals who are not on the forum and unable to defend themselves is wrong.

Please Google "off shore" secrets " its all there.

Lets get one fact straight.

The Report did did  not come from Me.  Its there and these are the investigative reporters who put it in the Public domain. I have tried to email them to provide more info.

It looks like Sam Knows about this and apparently  has responded to queries put to him by the investigative  journalists.

This was his explanation to the source;

He has explained himself!

So you see I am not the one alleging. I am just the Messengerooooooooo!

May be I would have to stop sharing these sort of information and keep them to myself , since some of you wont even accept, in the face of facts and  the evidence.

Tawiah,

And the young men coming up at Legon and KNUST, all they aspire to in life is to join the politicians.

I met Okudzeto Ablakwa, err,, Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa, a very nice soft-spoken man, with a friend who was a savvy world-wide Marketing man in my office and I could see through the minds of these young people. They would use any method in the book for short term gain. I told the story how this Marketing Manager was trying to pimp out one of the employees to go and solicit advertising contract form a Businessman. I had to fire all of them after 2 months as this Rawlings Generation had no clue how to work hard to earn a living!

I have no doubt that some of them think like our friend Dr. Fred McBagonluri who was a young admirer of Rawlings and now planning to make his move home to join them but sizing up the adults like me who he claims we have not been effective, condemning us, and getting himself endeared to them. They think we were born yesterday?  They seem to have their strategies set – “join them and take your share”.

Eeeei!! Ghana!

Tawiah, what did we do wrong as a people, black people?

Awudis3m nkoaaa!! (Awudis3m = murder or acts that can cause great harm to others)

To quote my friend Ofori Ampofo, it’s all “p3s3menkomenya (selfishness), adufidip3 (greed), nkontompo (lies)”!

Let me add one more: anadwo-mana-s3m.

This is advanced Twi, so forgive us.

Look, Ghanaians paaa! A single inquiry by Steve Nyako as to why there was a million dollar real estate purchase with questions, implies smear?

This was published and even Sam Jonah responded to it.

“Hand-picking” of executive is the name of the game, my friend. I have been around for a long time in industry and if you are not a co-founder, you are hand-picked as they hand-picked Carly Fiorina for HP.

Nothing derogatory about it. However, nobody said it is done at random.

Opanyin Henry

Akwaaba. I heard you are in Montreal for a board meeting next week. Please link up as I am in Canada for the next three weeks.

Thanks for the factual messages to debunk unsubstantiated facts about one of African finest businessmen. Dont people set up shelf companies in friendly business jurisdictions for taxe effieciencies? They call it "sharing" but then they engage in hearsays to tarnish Sam's image. Didnt Ashanti have a board of directors and shareholders when Sam was in charge?

For those who dont know, Rawlings launched a thorough investigation in Sam Jonah's taxes and activitives to try and get him in jail when he fell out with him. He even sacked his own Mining Minister, Ohene Kena and the CEO of Minerals Commission then to pave way for the investigation into Sam's activities. Little did we know that Sam was one of the highest tax payers in Ghana.

They say Peter Amponsah Mensah was handpicked when he became one of the youngest Managers at Ashanti. They say you were also hand picked but you did not have patience and left Ghana too quickly.

When Ashanti was riding high through its hedging programme and expanding into Guinea etc when gold companies were shutting down no one noticed. As soon as things bust and the company was in trouble it was all Sam's fault. Didnt the board of Ashanti and shareholders endorse the merger proposal with Anglo?

Opanyin Danso: Henry serves on the boards of companies in Canada and other countries, a respected African professional and businessman providing expertise to many governments in the Middle East and other countries. He does not have to get to Sam Jonah's status to defend him. Let us stop such smear campaigns on our successsful professionals.

Enough said.

Hi Emmanuel,
No one has maligned anyone.

No doubt Mr Jonah is now a top private business man in Ghana and rest of Africa. He has operations in South Africa, Botswana etc etc, and obviously has made a success of his own Jonah Capital business, and now has  means to buy what ever palaces or Mansions he wishes to buy to live in or for investments. We are all happy he is a successful Ghanaian Global  Businessman who has been knighted by the Queen of England.

The information that came to light recently and published by the investigative Journalists in Washington DC and  the Gaurdian Newspaper in London is about some business dealings he dabbled in ,  10 years ago in 2003.

The facts were put to him by the journalists, and he did not deny it. I lie? He gave reasons why he did what he did. I lie? So who has maligned who? Emmanuel ?

The Journalists who investigated and came up with, and published the facts,  and put it in the public domain or those who found out about the report and  shared it on GLU????

As far as I am concerned he has given an explanation which is good for me. However are you saying that given what we knew about Ashanti Gold in 2003 , when he was a Ghanaian Citizen running a $Billion Dollar Company in Ghana we should not ask certain legitimate questions?

When does asking legitimate questions, following investigative facts coming to light  constitute Maligning some body?

If you have missed the information go back and read it properly . The links are in the PUBLIC DOMAIN, but  I can give you all the links again if you wish.

I live and work partly in the UK so I pay taxes in this country as well as in Ghana where I have a small house.

If the UK Taxman gets an inkling that I have purchased , Dr Danso's $700,000 dollar, Danso Plaza in  East Legon, Accra  for investment and repatriating the rental income to the UK, the UK tax man will be breathing down my neck in less than no time. You bet!

Why do you want to complicate these things , I don't know.
Have a nice evening.

P:S

There are even more damaging revelations yet to come, of the shenanigans of Ghanaian Leaders and politicians and their dealings with offshore companies in  British Virgin Islands and Cayman Islands.

Just go back and read the facts and let us discuss without emotion. Nobody has maligned anybody, the facts are in the public domain in London and Washington DC.

I must add that  It was not Only Sir Sam Jonah , whose property investment affairs in London were looked into , there were countless other very wealthy individuals from all over the world.

Good Evening.

France budget minister Cahuzac resigns over tax probe

Jerome Cahuzac, file pic from 19 March 2013Jerome Cahuzac gained a reputation as a vocal crusader against the use of overseas tax havens

France's Budget Minister Jerome Cahuzac has resigned after an investigation was launched into alleged tax fraud.

Mr Cahuzac has denied any wrongdoing following a report by an investigative website that he had an undeclared Swiss bank account until 2010.

He was to be replaced by the Europe Minister Bernard Cazeneuve, said a statement from the president's office.

Mr Cahuzac gained a reputation as a vocal crusader against the use of overseas tax havens.

On Tuesday, prosecutors announced a full investigation into the Swiss bank account that the minister allegedly used to hide assets from the tax authorities.

But investigators said they had not turned up enough evidence to charge him by name.

The website, Mediapart, said it had a recording of a phone conversation between Mr Cahuzac and one of his aides in which the minister allegedly expressed concern about the UBS account which was reportedly used to siphon funds to Singapore.

He has dismissed the reports as "crazy claims" and launched a defamation suit against Mediapart.

"I have never had an account in Switzerland or any other place abroad," said Mr Cahuzac in December.

Steve,

Not to worry.

Any savvy person will know that the British Queen will not make any man a Knight without the person having contributed to their royal welfare beyond normal work.

Don’t let us kid ourselves. Once you are the CEO of a multi-national company, it is political. How the heck does a black man get to be knighted?

We should be bold enough about such things. I said hand-picked, and I mean hand-picked as a good old “obedient servant”. That is the way colonial letters used to be signed. Anybody of the old older school ahead of my generation was an “Obedient servant”! Period!

Sam Jonah was an obedient servant who helped the British maneuver through tough times, from Nkrumah through all the revolutions in Ghana. I won’t put it past the British if they collaborated with the CIA  to get Nkrumah out!

I said I have tough opinions, but this is not personal – it is the nature of the beast. I am a slow deliberate thinker when it comes to forming opinions, but a deep one and takes me a long time to voice out. The British did not like our Socialism and they were in for themselves, period! Nothing wrong with strategy! It is legal greed and selfishness if they hired a good obedient servant! Nobody will blame them for being smart.

Look, if Sam Jonah wanted the goodwill of Ghana and the poor people of Obuasi, he could have negotiated for the city to be developed like Nkrumah did Tema!

Did he? No!!

Obuasi could have been negotiated to have underground sewage, and he could have used his power and influence to convince and persuade the tough guys to do as I am describing! Come oooooon!! Even in America that is how politics works. I am sure some of you know how Congressmen fight for development in their homes towns here also,, and that would have been nice if he had pushed for such changes in Ghana.

My assessment is that he could have been a good CEO but San Jonah never cared much beyond his immediate circle! Just like Kofi Anna, he was an obedient servant and at least Kofi has built something to train others. I is possible Sam Jonah has built a school also but in terms of what affects everybody’s life, nothing we can cite! Nothing!

I mince no words for those who were blessed with fortune in Ghana. No I don’t! The power of persuasion is real in a democracy. It is how we use the money. You think if Ghanaians MPs and Ministers can be bought for small gifts in Korea, a Ghanaians savvy CEO with his own private Jet could not wine and dine these MPs and Ministers to do the much needed changes in Ghana? Come ooon! If Sam donated $10,000 to each of say 100 MPs, that is only $1 million. If he wanted openness in government, redesign of the highways, or other issues, trust me he could have persuaded them!!

Do you think if Sam Jonah had bought shares in the Ghana Water Company and sat on the Board to see for the delivery of water he could not have done it?

I hear he was on the Board of Ghana Airways but never influenced change.

Look folks, money is a blessing from God or whoever you imagine the creator to be, and so is core cognitive skills called intelligence! We need to use them to serve others! Period! What pleasure do you all get in eating more than your share of cake? Look in your refrigerators! Look in your garages and remember there are many in Ghana who could use your used clothing, shoes, books, and the old Laptop and Cell phones in the drawers!! Sometimes I look at my refrigerator and I feel sad! I have apples that are getting rotten because Costco sells them 24 per package and this one was not crisp enough as I like,, and so in 2 weeks,,sitting there! I just threw away a bag of lemons yesterday.

Look, either San Jonah was not a strong man who cared much for the rest of his people, or he was just a good old obedient servant and even then if he cared, he could have influenced Ghana far more than he did.

Let this be passed on to him and I am ready to debate him,, of course with my Dagate friend Fred and Steve on my side.

Dear Wofa Danso,
Its been a while sending you a personal mail like today even though I have always felt your prolific writings at the GLU Forum.

If you may recall I had discussed with you the possibility of my attending the Annual Association of American Geographers (AAG) Conference in Los Angeles from 7th - 14th April, 2013. Unfortunately I could not make it because my niece will be marrying in June 2013 and I have to be in New York and the cost implications is too much for me.

However, I have two young colleagues in my Department who will be attending the conference. They are Mrs. Regina Obllie Amoako-Sakyi & Mr. James K. Eshun (both are lecturers). Given the current financial challenges public Universities in Ghana  faces to  fully support such trips they got only partial funding (i.e. Return Flight Ticket). Thus it has become necessary that they secure accommodation and you know how expensive hotels in that part of the world is. Tickets have been bought already and they may not be able to make it without accommodation.
It just dawn on me today when I open your mail and the thought just resonates to inform you (Uncle) if you will be available during the period and possibly host them on behalf of your nephew. So Wofa Danso that's my complex story and appeal if possible.
Kind regards and hope to hear from you asp.

Dear Kwabena,

I thought I had replied this in private but maybe you did not get it.

As I said I’d be more than willing to accommodate the colleagues, but I am 3,000 miles from New York and 400 miles from Los Angeles. It would be great to meet you, Regina and James. My good friend Kissi who was in New York moved to Ghana last year.

Now that you have put it on the open forum, folks, anybody in LA who may be able to accommodate these two colleagues of Kwabena and fellow Ghanaians, please let them know, since they are copied. Even if you can accommodate one it may be fine.

It is unfortunate that Ghana would send lecturers out to conferences and not fund their hotel bills, when from all know the executive travel in entourages, and take the most expensive hotels. Are we not all human? These lecturers, in my opinion, are providing a service that may be equivalent if not more than that of some of our honorables whose performance output often leave our people thirsty and in the dark!

I hope this disgrace will not be allowed to continue. Ghana is wasting enough money in judgment debts, acts of mismanagement, uncollected toll revenues, interest accumulation on unpaid loans, deliberate mistaken orders of $165,000 BMWs with road contracts, and at the end of the year we claim to overrun our budgets by some 25% or more. Enough of this!

I am sorry but once this is put in the public domain, I can’t help but comment.

Folks, if anybody in LA has a room let them know and may God bless.

Regina and James, stay tuned.

Cheers,

Folks,

These people have a conscience, a reputation to protect. They have family names, legacies, etc. it is critical for one to behave so the kids behind will enjoy the good name. Look at names like Kennedy in America for public service. You can add Bush also.

I think we used to have that when I was growing up. Reputation was very important when we used to live in small communities where everybody knew each other.

I can’t wait for the say when people will not have to come to crowded Accra and spend a day to register their vehicles or for passports. It is wrong. We can make changes and we should! Once we start having power centers in districts or town, contacts being signed and responsibilities, there is no doubt in my mind that economic activity will be in real exponential growth that touches peoples’ lives, and not b fixing the curve.

I stand to correction. Nobody can predict the future but I know and observe how the Gas groups and Ewe groups, Fante, Kwahus,  and Ashantis take pride in activities relating to them. We cement that before we go national, especially when it comes to services.

Folks,
Didn't the former UK Energy Minister, Chris Huhne, go to jail recently for some misdemeanour or unethical behaviour, as simple  as dodging, or trying to avoid a driving ban, by telling a lie and "forcing" his wife allegedly to take responsibility over 10 years Ago?

Only if we upheld ethics in Ghanaian society in both POLITICS and BUSINESS, would we even smell the air that blows across the "promised land " from afar.

In my experience We have no ethics in Ghanaian society, so how are we going to move forward?

How can we keep GREED, PREDATORY and other UNSAVOURY human instincts in check, or minimize or keep socially undesireable consequences at bay if we don't ENFORCE ETHICS in Government and in Business??

I am surprised at some of the reactions , especially from our  our learned, and now well established former Ashanti Gold fields executives on this forum, who think they MUST attack the messenger rather than the message, when this case cropped up.

Prince, Emmanuel, Henry, Peter et al, No one has done anything wrong by revealing this information.

Let me just break things down into bite sizes if I may this morning.

Look the conduct of economic and business affairs is like engaging in SPORTING ACTIVITIES, just like our beloved FOOTBALL GAME.

For the game to proceed in an orderly manner, rules and regulations are required to maintain a  sense of FAIR PLAY. That is why some of us  do all we can to point these things out and  ensure Ghana develops PROPERLY and achieve its FULL POTENTIAL.

Don't  the players and a  refree in a football game,  have to abide by certain accepted standards of moral conduct and good  behaviour on the pitch?

Look you guys worked or are still working at Obuasi, I lie? Isn't One of Africa's GREATEST TRAGEDIES lies in its apparent inability to take advantage of our abundance natural resources including Gold, Oil etc.

I was only a child of the early 60's, and since my birth I have been witnessing how Ghana , our beloved country, has been struggling with development, somersaulting all the time and UNABLE to solve  mundane issues , with nothing to show for it after 56 years of independence.

As far as I am concerned we have reached the CRUNCH point.

Is it not shameful that  We have reached such a shameful stage, when we even  have to even go and borrow or be gifted less than $1million Dollars from the Chinese Government, for us  to equip our National Parliament with Computers, scanners and fax machines.

Wow!

You guys have had the priviledge of working at Obuasi, only if you can tell us why Obuasi , the home of Ghana Gold, remains DIRT POOR, after 120 years of Gold Mining, then I am all ears!

This is what we should be angry about not  being defensive about some facts that have come up in the public domain about a former colleague.

I really would wish to engage with you guys, because I am on a learning curve, and we all need to think about mother Ghana, not about tribes or where we come from. I  not in the school of thought that thinks reciting your NATIONAL PLEDGE  or singing the NATIONAL ANTHEM, without missing a stanza is the ONLY badge of democracy we have to show.

I am Ghanaian and no one can PIGEON HOLE me! Period.

I have every legitimate right to question things that relates to Ghana, and the welfare of Ghanaian citizens.

If you guys are saying we should not share this sort of information in a public forum which discusses Leadership issues then I am not really sure what you stand for ?

You may have made your monies big time and are probably called NANA, CHIEFS or TORGBES in Ghana, but how can we get to the promised land if we don't deal with such ethical issues in Leadership?

I would really like to bounce off ideas with you guys, to see how we take Ghana forward if we do not ensure ethics and fair play prevails in everything we do to move Ghana forward??

My question again is why is Obuasi, the home of Gold Mining in Ghana, which has been mining Gold for over 120 Years, in the same league with Johannesburgh, South Africa, is such a DIRT POOR PLACE? Lets bring out the Statistics.

Emmanual,
I thought we were having a civilized argument?

Please argue the point rather than being inflammatory?

It looks like you are one of those people I have not met who will not make or defend an argument based on facts.

If you cant, Dont be rude??

The issue is if you feel Sam broke any laws when he purchased the property in the UK it is not too late to report to appropriate authorities in Ghana or the UK. You are indirectly insinuating wrong doing by drawing an analogy with you purchasing Dr. Danso's $700,000 property. Rawlings used the state security and investigative apparatus to investigate Sam when he fell out with him. It was all in the public domain as Sam responded through the media and opened his personal dealings and the books of Ashanti for scrutiny. Rawlings did not find any wrongdoing. Either report to appropriate authorities is you are not happy with Sam's response or shut up.

Emmanuel, Henry, and those in the Mining area, Steve,

I think the title may have contributed to the misunderstanding.

Somebody may think Steve or whoever started the topic may be linking Sam Jonah, errr, Honorable Sir Sam Jonah, to the “Two Ghanaians Busted in London”.

I think the association is unfortunate.

I am glad that Sam himself has responded to the newspaper allegations.

Folks, there are heroes in every area of specialization and Sam Jonah is definitely a hero in the area of Business and we should applaud that. However this forum is more for accountability of public officials and what we can do to effect some ethical and socio-economic changes. Sam Jonah was a private individual, never took or sought public office(smart Kwahu-like man) and hence we should leave him alone. His tax situation can be checked on by the British and the Ghanaians officials, and at that point only does it become a public issue, since, as Steve pointed out, the taxes we all pay is what builds the roads,, potholes or no potholes.

Let’s move on. I’d love for Sam Jonah to join us. He must be my age bracket, perhaps a few years older but his marbles intact and does not need to explain anything save somebody like me would like to know what he could have or should have or would have used his money to do to help – but so far it was not illegal, even if he sounded greedy and selfish, flies his private jet, it was at the private level, and he is no different than Bill Gates, Carlos slim  and all these so far as he pays his contribution towards renovating the airport so he can use it.

My first mail.

Peace!

Don’t forget to let your voice be know on public issues. Ghana belongs to all of us, be they some of the “greedy bastards” try to make laws to prevent others or not. It is a temporary phase – till the next strong man shows up. It is hoped that this time the “strong man” will also be a caring man with sympathy and love for others in society and hence help accelerate the development of Ghana for all and not for a few.

'The card would then be used either to make purchases of luxury goods or withdraw money.

'The total loss from compromised cards, whoever was responsible, whether it was one of the defendants or others, is something in the region of £144,000.

If he had used his money to influence say the Legislative and Executive in developing infrastructures that we all use, I’d be fine with him.

As it is private jets and all that never even influenced the people n office to help develop Obuasi, let alone build decent roads, etc!

    Tweaaa!!

What is the leadership, then? Any CEO is a corporate leader. In the West corporate leaders are engaged in the community development efforts – at least some of them.

Sam seems to have done a good job for the objectives for which he was hired – lead the mining employees who were working to earn their living and hence obedient servants to make money?

Difference between the rich in the West and those in Africa.

No problem – no secrets here.

Left to men alone, we can sleep on the living room floor if need be (at least some of us with backgrounds of Abetifi Presbyterian-type Boarding Schools) who have not lost our roots.

However, women usually have some standards that make it hard to accept visitors – since they do most of the decorative work. It’s funny how my wife fuzzies about how things are placed – good example this formal Dining Area Table that I am using as an office outside the main office which is upstairs but lonely since I watch TV whiles working.

Folks in LA area – if anybody can help, I think our colleagues Regina and James may not be as fuzzy and may accept whatever you have instead of paying $500-1,000 for a week stay in Hotel.

BTW – Kwabena, what exactly in LA – address will help. Remember LA is a very large city and unlike New York or London, we in California have some land; hence the city spreads across a 60 miles diameter and more highways that in the whole of most countries. Travel to the conference could therefore take two hours travel depending on where they get accommodation.

If you have evidence of wrong doing, fraud, non disclosure of taxes etc please report to the appropriate authorities. To use the forum to make allegations to individuals who are not on the forum and unable to defend themselves is wrong.

    Steve,

Sorry I skipped mail and responded to that of Emmanuel before reading yours.

I think the issues are clear.

Sam Jonah was a private Businessman employed to bring maximum profit for his employer the stockholder of Ashanti gold.

From what we have read, he was simply a Businessman like any other and did not violate any laws of Ghana or UK. The title was under a case of tax evasion or wrong doing,, and caused others to defend him.

Until he is found to have done what he did illegally, we should leave it alone and ask the other question you put in a different topic.

I would love to engage Sam Jonah as to why they did not do much for Obuasi and I am sure he will say they paid their taxes to government and were not responsible for the town. I think we should hold the Government responsible and only discuss the ethics of Business with Sam. I did a term paper on Business Ethics and it is very interesting. Sam has no responsibility at all for Obuasi. Period. However, most CEOs do some acts of kindness in the community as a PR measure. These discussions fall under the philosophic principles of Ethics and is very interesting. A short extract forma term paper I did:

    ____________________________________________________

    3. Ethical Issues on Dr. Waksal’s case

In their article on the hypothetical relationship between accountability and ethical behavior, Danielle Beu and M. Ronald Buckley (2001) start by saying that unethical behavior occurs in all sectors of society, including business, government, religion, education and sports (Beu & Buckley, 2001). The authors examine society, ethics and accountability, and suggest that some kinds of controls or accountability seem to influence ethical behavior. We examine the case of Dr. Sam Waksal using various ethical theories.

    A.Egoism:

Human beings are described a having an inner urge or desire to act in their own self interest. Executives and corporations donating to communities and expecting some return for such acts are said to be acting with prudence. However, the ethical egoist argues that “all choices either involve or should involve self promotion as their sole objective” (Beauchamp & Bowie, 2001, p.12). The psychological egoist argues that every individual is motivated to act in their own perceived self interest. Even the so-called altruistic acts are considered only as “enlightened self interest”.  However this theory poses serious questions for moral theory because the question remains to be answered if there is really a truly altruistic act or moral motivation. Were people like Madam Theresa or Gandhi of India acting in their own self interest? If so where or when is the expected gain? In the gain expected to be in the Christian Heaven and the life after? Can we compare the case of Dr. Sam Waksal to the acts of Gandhi, and say that both acts are of equal moral value because both receive some reward, one on earth, and the other in some space called Heaven? Of course not.

The other egoistic philosophy that offers even more challenge to common morality theories is ethical egoism. This theory argues that “the only valid standard of conduct is the obligation to promote one’s own well-being above everyone else’s” (Beauchamp & Bowie, 2001, p. 14).

    >>>>

    B. Utilitarian Ethics.

Utilitarian Theories of Ethics contend that the moral worth or value of any action is determined solely by their consequences.  An action is right or wrong depending on the balance of how much good or bad it results for all parties affected. The purpose or function of morality is “to promote human welfare by minimizing harms and maximizing benefits” (Beauchamp & Bowie, 2001, p.17). The developers of this philosophy were mainly David Hume (1711-1776), Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832), and John Stuart Mills (1806-1873).

    >>>>

     C. Kantian Ethics:

Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) proposed a moral theory and philosophy that is based on respect for people and respect for their dignity as rational human beings. Human beings should not be treated purely as a means to an end, and neither as ends. As such, failure to respect people means treating them as a means to satisfy one’s own ends. According to Kant, if one shows lack of respect for another person, it implies “either to reject the person’s considered judgments, to ignore the person’s concerns and needs, or to deny the person the liberty to act on those judgments” (Beauchamp & Bowie, 2001, p.24)

Danso, K.A. (2003) The Ethics of Personal Arrogance or Fraud? – The Case of Dr. Sam Waksal.

A Paper Presented in Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements of ETHICS and SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY  July – September, 2003

    _______________

Hope that helps refresh some memories and teach those not aware of why the white man behaves the way they do in Business – Utilitarian philosophy – most businesses and businessmen think that way.

    Good Morning Doc,

My Little piece on ethics was not about any individual.Your points raised here, though I suspect would bore a lot of people, but  are very important for all of us . It is the cause of our problems. our  Leaders, especially the political ones are and have always been   so unethical, our problems compound in multiples each year with no end in sight.

We seem to be stuck in a DARK LONG TUNNEL and if we dont deal with ethical issues and corruptiuon in Business and in Government then No chance. But then who needs to set the Example and make sure the Laws are enforced ? I hear you ask?

In other for us not to be accused , lets discuss this issue of ethics and corruption in Ghanaian leadership, politics and business on another thread, that I would start and take out,  Honourable Sir Sam Jonah's name out of the subject  discussion, or some might interprete it as casting a slur on his reputation.

The issues I discussed below was purely referring to the lack of ethics and corruption in Ghanaian Political leadership that has blighted our lives from year dot and we keep chasing tails. Its about the LOOTING of public resources for Private gain.

There is a lot of information floating around especially in European Aid organisations and NGO circles, about how some Ghanaian have behaved so corruptly. Buying properties in the name of third parties and hiding their ill gotten wealth

Its not only about the current ones but the past ones as well.

Kuffuor and his Ministers to the current Leadership. Some of the allegations relate to illegal acquisition of wealth , some being hidden abroad in shell companies and in the names of relatives and friends and children.

Just look at how Political Leaders and public officers deliberately mismanage to to create Judgement debt liabilities for Government so they can share with corrupt Foreign and Local  Businessmen?

There is a classic example where its being alleged that a couple of Ghanaian oooooppssss!

Good Morning doc we shall discuss later.

Ps  If I come across credible information I would expose them, so that at least when I meet  Opanyin Opong the ancestors in life yonder I can explain, I did my best  I did not ONLY recite the National Pledge with Gusto or forget any Stanza's of the National Anthem, or even flew the flag higher when BLACK STARS were Playing , but did my best for the land they left for us.

    Emmanuel,

    Not to worry.

Running a nation,, well, any human organization, is tough! We are all learning on this forum, including Steve N. Sometimes we all talk like in Politics, sometimes like in Business, but I wanted to bring that Ethical and Political distinction. You and some of us may see the failure of our government as we go along,, and even Fred will agree with us, and if he sees an avenue or the right formula to engage our government constructively than holding their shirt collar (smile), or dripping some honey on their tongues from Development partners, we will all welcome it.

Every evening on ABC I find out how little I know by watching an American programs called “Jeopardy”, a quiz show that can earn winners lots of money. Last week one winner had won continuously for 7 days a total of over $125,000.

Let us all remember that to them much is give, to them much is expected. We overseas have 24/7/365 electricity, heating or cooling. IN Ghana that is a luxury. The least we can do is make calls to relevant government offices and tell them loudly (as the angry guy in a New York apartment did through his window? I forget the name of that movie):

WE ARE TIRED AS HELL!! AND WE WILL NOT TAKE IT ANYMORE!!

WE ARE TIRED AS HELL!! AND WE WILL NOT TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!

WE ARE TIRED AS HELL!! AND WE WILL NOT TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!!!!

That is the first lesson in Democracy 101. Politicians respond.

You bring a lot of wisdom to the discussion and I am glad you have laid the case to debunk Steve's continuous attack on the miners for the current state of Obuasi. Where in the world does mining companies build towns? That responsibility is for local councils and government. Miners have to play by the rules and pay taxes, royalties and corporate social investments. Didnt the Ghana Chamber of Mines suggest to Ghana government to cycle some of their royalty payments to  development in mining communities? Did the government listen? When you operate a business and you are told to send community development contribution to local council and government who has responsibility for the development of the town, do you take the law in your hands and take on that responsibility?

If Steve and others think the miners are not paying enough, tell government to legislate and ensure compliance, period. Johanesburg is in the current state because the South African goverment built the infrastructure from its share of minerals revenue. The mining companies in South Africa did not build Johanesburg.

Sam, Henry, Peter, Jacob and all the others who made their careers at Obuasi and now doing well in business are not responsible for the beaufication of Obuasi. For over a decade the then PNDC will not even give the Adansi chiefs what was due them from mineral royalties. The likes of PV Obeng who come from Adansi intervened without success. Steve should leave the miners alone and direct his attack to the government. Havent Steve been educated on this topic enough by Jacob, Henry, Prince and now Wofa Danso?

    Steve,

    I think we all agree.

POINT to note and distinguish for future dialogue is

    [GOVERNMENT EXECTIVES] vs.

[PRIVATE EXECTIVES working for WESTERN CORPORATIONS].

    That’s all.

Peace to Sam J., Emmanuel, Henry, Peter, Jacob.

We can agree that if a Ghanaians works for Western corporation, they will be handsomely rewarded but if they do the Ghanaian boogie and siphon money, they will go to prison! That is for sure. I recall as a child in the 1950s before Independence and even after during Nkrumah’s era, hearing of managers for corporations put in prison.

I can almost bet that Sam Jonah, whiles working for the British controlled firm, Ashanti, would behave just like a British and even better in terms of discipline. Give the Ghanaian environment, would change people.

We are not absolving anybody who steals public funds, but I think until we get further evidence, Sam Jonah really made money and he can pay his taxes f they collect, and move his money around if the laws allow him,, that is all I am trying to say from Utilitarian and Egoist Ethics. Most people do as they can get away with but come April 15 in America, everybody knows the laws! Period! Nobody will say you did not know! If they catch you, you go to prison! Not all are caught, but they try and question is do we in Ghana have systems like these in place?

    If not, then why not?

What was the use of the education?

Dr. Eric Sekyere and Prof. Kwaku Azar seem to think it is for lack of knowledge or competencies, why our Water and electricity etc, are now working,, but I have met too many top Engineers overseas to use that excuse anymore. Do you guys know the President’s own brother here, a friend of mine is a Transportation Expert!! And this is not a private matter. Has he called his brother for any advice about our 3 hour traffic?

One Ghanaians Engineer here whose mother is a politician (won’t mention her name) – is a Water Resource Engineer – top highly paid Engineer! Has anybody in government called on him?

One guy here in our area is a top Architect and City Planner!! Has Mayor Vanderpuije or some of his mates from school called on him?

And BTW these people went to KNUST before coming here.

The blame, dear Steve, is not in our stars, or in the likes of Sam Jonah, but in our LEADERSHIP, period!!

And the only way under a democracy to influence change when things are not going right, is through citizenship activation!!

All supporters of Mr. Sam Jonah who believe how great and wonderful he had been to Ghana and shareholders of Ashanti Goldfield might care to revisit this article published a couple of years ago:

    Goldman Sachs 070810

Goldman Sachs, the global financial institution, with fraud allegations levied against it has a long history of setting up its clients for a fall...and making handsome profits.

This is a story of how this global investment banking and securities firm screwed Ghana

In 1998, Ashanti Gold was the 3rd largest Gold Mining company in the world. The first "black" company on the London Stock Exchange, Ashanti had just purchased the Geita mine in Tanzania, positioning Ashanti to become even larger. But in May 1999, the Treasury of the United Kingdom decided to sell off 415 tons of its gold reserves. With all that gold flooding the world market, the price of gold began to decline. By August 1999, the price of gold had fallen to $252/ounce, the lowest it had been in 20 years.

Ashanti turned to its Financial Advisors - Goldman Sachs - for advice. Goldman Sachs recommeded that Ashanti purchase enormous hedge contracts - "bets" on the price of gold. Simplifying this somewhat, it was similar to when a homeowner 'locks in' a price for heating oil months in advance. Goldman recommeded that Ashanti enter agreements to sell gold at a 'locked-in' price, and suggested that the price of gold would continue to fall.

But Goldman was more than just Ashanti's advisors. They were also sellers of these Hedge contracts, and stood to make money simply by selling them. And they were also world-wide sellers of Gold itself.

In September 1999 (one month later), 15 European Banks with whom Goldman had professional relationships made a unanimous surprise announcement that all 15 would stop selling gold on world markets for 5 years. The announcement immediately drove up gold prices to $307/ounce, and by October 6, it had risen to $362/ounce.

Ashanti was in trouble. At Goldman's advice, they had bet that gold prices would continue to drop, and had entered into contracts to sell gold at lower prices. These contracts were held by a group of 17 other world banks. Ashanti found themselves being forced to buy gold at high world prices and sell it at the low contract prices to make good on the contracts. The result? In a few weeks time, Ashanti found itself with 570 million dollars worth of losses. It had to beg the 17 banks not to force the execution of the contracts.

Who served as the negotiator for the 17 banks and Ashanti? Goldman Sachs. The same company that designed the contracts for Ashanti(making a profit in their sale.

The basic bankruptcy of Ashanti drove its stock price from an all time high of $25 per share to a paltry $4.62 per share. Thousands of investors - your blogger among them - lost their investments almost overnight as Ashanti was declared insolvent.

In the end (2003), Ashanti was purchased by their largest African competitor, AngloGold, a British company headquartered in South Africa, who bought them for a song. The Financial Advisors to AngloGold? You guessed it: Goldman Sachs.

The destruction of Ashanti Gold by Goldman Sachs was saturated with fraud and conflicts of interest: Goldman Sachs served as Ashanti's Financial Advisors; profitted form the contracts they designed and marketed for Ashanti; was involved in the manipulation of the gold prices on which the contracts depended; represented Ashanti's creditors when the contracts went bad; and profitted as the Financial Advisors to the company that picked up the Ashanti corpse for pennies on the dollar.

    ---

Moral of the Story:  The White man Always Wins -  He just needs to find a black man (an "obedient servant") as your pawn to do your dirty work.  Incidentally, Mr. Jonah recently was hired by another American financial big shot, Bank of America - a company I could tell all kind of stories.

    Kwame,

    Thanks you! Thanks you!!

I knew there was a story like this but could not put my hands on it.

Well, I am sure one can argue this was not a deliberate fraud on the part of the Sam Jonah, but it reflects on lack of cognitive skills and knowledge of the double-dealing Goldman Sachs.

So Sam Jonah is still working? Bank of America hired him to do what?

I thought he was old and retired. I may be wrong.

    Thanks.

    Sure, I see the plan.

Remember Vodafone is a takeover of Ghana and so Sam Jonah is the right person for this new assignment. The Big Boys know what they are doing. These are the same people who have had the money from generation to generation for over 300 -500 or more years in Europe through the slave trade time. Ghana, Africa is only a playground.

Do we have anything on his Jonah Capital (Pty).Ltd?

Has he financed any projects any of you know about? I think he surely was blessed with lots of money and in the right field of Capital since Ghana and Africa needs capital. I will believe Bank of America when they open a branch in Ghana and give loans there. A good friend retired from there as Vice President and tried to settle in Ghana but came back,, his Mankesim investments at a standstill like most we know of.

    Massa Kwame

I thought we had concluded this discussion with the wisdom Opanyin Danso provided. This is old news and most of us know the ups and downs of the Ashanti mine. Miners take risks and it is this risk that took Ashanti from a single operation in Obuasi to acquisitions in Ayanfuri and Bibiani in Ghana and Tanzania and Guinea. When gold mines were closing down, Ashanti was flying with success because of the hedging programme. Was it sustainable in the long term? Matybe not but when the bust happened Sam did not walk away. Whether right or wrong he negotiated for a merger which was approved by the board of Ashanti and shareholders including the Government of Ghana.

What sparked this discussion did not bother on managerial competency or incompetency but linking Sam to a fraud case and making a big deal about buying a property at the time that he was negotiating the merger. Many dont even know that Sam and other executives of multinational companies in Ghana were paid the equivalent of other executives in the western world. The intent is to give them incentives not to take similar lucrative jobs overseas. Hence they could afford building dormitories for secondary school, award scholarships and sponsor students on various programmes etc.

Would Ashanti have  been better off without the hedging that let them ride with success when others were closing down and later got them into trouble?  That is a question for shareholders who endorsed those decisions. I maintain that Sam Jonah, Jacob Osei Yeboah, Henry Antwi, Peter Amponsah Mensah and many others are real success stories and we should applaud their contributions to the economy of Ghana. If however any of them have broken laws, lets us not shy from providing evidence to the right authorities.

The discussion progressed to why Obuasi is at its current state and Opanyin Danso provided some wisdom that governments develop towns, not miners. If Steve and others care to know, the Mills-Mahama administration increased mining royalties. When a mining company in Ghana breached environmental laws and they were fined millions of dollars did the government use the money to help the community which was affected? How much of the royalty increase have been used to help mining towns? Let us get our facts right and direct our disappointments to the right authorities.

    Good Morning Kwame,
Thanks for bringing some relevant information to this discussion. I bet a lot of Ghanaians did not know this. I was aware of this in those days, and that is what makes me question certain actions, but instead of looking at the facts some people will attack the messenger. Its 2002/2003 we are talking about.

Do we all love Ghana as much, I hear you ask ?

I don't have the power of prayer, because I just dont believe it works, when one is consistently, making the wrong decisions and taking the incorrect actions.

    We are all learning.

Look the " path to development is a well trodden one, we do not have to reinvent the wheel" My Last comment on this matter.

    Good Morning again.

P.s Eeeeiiii Kwamina Ahwoi still does not want  to engage to bounce off ideas, about the decrepit Local Government system he has fashioned out for Ghana for the past 30 years which has not worked and ended us up in a Ditch!.  I am still waiting.

    Folks,
Incidentally I have had lots of discussions with someone who hails from Obuasi and is now one of their MP,s  and I gleaned a lot of the facts from him when I met him in London many years ago.

How I wish we can bring him into this discussion for the Views of the people of Obuasi.

The sad thing is in all of these discussions , virtually no one is Championing the views of the People of Obuasi,  and what they think of the whole Ashanti Gold Issue and its terribly sad. that the people, Ghanaian Citizens affected by all these, are not being consulted for their views. They are now bearing brunt of actions and inaction of people who did not just care for their welfare.

As far as I am concerned this is where the INJUSTICE lies.

What is the population of Obuasi? Any one ?

    Regards

    Folks,
    Context is everything.
Now that Kwame Tuffuor has introduced the CONTEXT into this I wish to add that THE BEST OF  Ashanti Gold and ANGLO Gold Ashanti is NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

There are several other operators in the mining industries around the world who even though pay taxes and everything to central Government have managed as part of their SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY POLICIES improved the living standards of their host communities.

According to Minelinks, at the OBUASI over the years 25 million ounces of Gold have been mined.

At BOGOSO, since mining operations  began in 1873, more than 9 Million ounces of Gold were produced, largely from extensive underground operations.
Minelinks .com. ( this was about 4 years old information)

Folks Last  year the Obuasi operations alone contributed almost $5 Billion Dollars to Anglo Golds Over profits. Guess how much taxes and royalties they paid to Government and to Local people?

Fiund out for yourself and you would understand why I always like CONTEXT.

    Good Morning, my last posting.

What is the Gold Price on the London Markets this morning?

    Steve,

    Kwamena Ahwoi?

You think a member of the PNDC will contact you? These people sleep with machine guns by their beds.

I told you how I tried to contact dr. Kwesi Botchwey at Harvard when he came to the Kennedy School after leaving his post or being fired from the NDC Ministerial post, and he never responded.

There is an Akan proverb I forget a little that goes like “if you eat okra (cat) meat, you be prepared for your nightmares or dreams” – something like if you join the mafia. In the last 30 or more years there is not a single person who has joined the P/NDC or even NPP governments, who has been able to maintain the same open conversation with his friends as he did before. Look, one of my friends, a former student, who came here, told me, right in my family room some three years ago, some of the benefits that go with being a Director of a Public Agency! Incredible! It is set up like the colonialist did, a major rip off of the government where they skim for the very top!

When last you heard of a public servant, at the Managerial level, being fired?

Ghana will never be to have genuine economic growth that affects all the people unless and until we change certain structures and systems of compensation and accountability! Period!  Some may argue but it takes experience with other systems and organizations to even dare try. I have spent all my life solving problems not only at the microscopic level as some of you out there have done, but also in the personal and commercial real estate Financial systems. By “problem” I mean when things are not going right or are difficult. When things are right, all incomes and credits, nobody seeks a broker to help them.

Steve, let’s leave Sam Jonah alone. I am very sure the British boys knew what they were doing and everything eventually was for their interest and Sam Jonah was just a happy cooperating tool with specific goals to make money for his investors, and so far as we cannot nail any specific crime committed, let’s move on and leave him alone. The fall of Ashanti Gold seem to be a mere gambling mistake, and of course all these executives walk away from the table with mega millions.

    Steve, Folks,

I want us to hold government responsible for the schools, libraries, greening of the towns, public parks, streets, etc, and that is what GLU is for.

Central government has failed and historically even in the Roman Empire, almost impossible to take care of the needs of everybody and every town and district. Kenya is moving forward and Ghana is still stuck in the PNDC mentality. People have died in Kenya and they are moving forward. In Ghana when people are killed it comes from one man and his friend taking the nation under a coup and pronouncing sentences on others without laws, not spontaneous demonstrations.

That is the difference why Kenya is learning and we are not.

Let’s give Mahama his 100 days and I sincerely believe a panel of engineers and people with managerial experience should meet the government about the projects under serious  issues in Ghana now – WATER, ELECTRCITY and SEWAGE SYSTEMS (aka TOILET).

If those in Ghana are unable to do this, when a member of the forum has become Secretary to the President, then what do I tell my late grandfather? That we talked on the Internet for nothing?

    Steve, let’s move on!

Let those in Ghana reading this stand up! I want men like Peter Amponsah Mensah, Michel, Jacob, Ofori Ampofo (if he is reading), Nana Yaw Amaka Otchere, Nana Ofori Darko, Nana Kyei Amponsah, Nii Allotey Brew Hammond, Kwasi Kissi, Sam Twerefour, and any others  who can attend, to lead a delegation to the President to discuss the issues of WATER, ELECTRCITY and SEWAGE SYSTEM.

We need 20 of you minimum and I will call to set p the appointment.

    Steve,

    Nations live under laws.

The burden and responsibilities of negotiations with a private company is the GOVERNMENT!!

    Period!

Let’s push our government to do better!! It is not their fault if they bribe your chiefs and leaders and get away with murder, some of them even dumping toxic chemicals!

I just replied to one of this series asking 20 GLU members to come together in Accra and meet the President. I will make the appointment.

    Emmanuel,

I guess your definition of "success" is a lot different than mine.  You can call  it a success if you want and praise all these people you mentioned who worked for a company that took advantage of the environment and its local people and never gave back anything in return, but I won't.  Life is not all about personal gain, you know.  There is something call business ethics and social responsibility, which unfortunately is a concept foreign to a lot of our "big boys" (and now some gals), especially those back home.

You mentioned  that Sam and other executives of multinational companies in Ghana were paid like their Western counterparts that allowed them to be able to build dormitories,  offer scholarships, sponsor students and programs etc.  The issue is if he could do all that with his riches and influence, then  why didn't he do so and why is Obuasi is in the dilapidated state it is in?    Even the oft perceived "greedy" Americans such as Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and Oprah Winfrey and others find it their responsibility to give back  with their wealth (with Oprah doing so in far away places as South Africa).  What have all these people you would  like to praise as success stories done besides enriched  themselves in a country where the basic necessities of life such as water, electricity and toilet is still a problem?  I just wish  the people of Obuasi and other places had the guts to stand up and make these companies such as Ash. Gold  and others be accountable for their deplorable actions like the folks in Nigeria are trying to do towards Chevron,  Shell, Exxon Mobile and the other oil companies.

Wofa K and Stephen,  this is not the place for me to divulge a lot of things, but I'd suggest you may want to contact Professor Kwame Aboraa (KNUST).  I think he is still on the GLU forum and might actually be reading this.  He was right there from the beginning of Sam Jonah's reign of Ash. Gold and can share with you some very interesting stories. If you need his email and/or cell number just let me know.

    Wow! Kwame,

Thanks. I have not communicated with Dr. Kwame Aboraa in a long time. The KNUST and Legon people don’t have time for us, I guess.

Honestly, I hear what you are saying but if Sam Jonah did indeed build dormitories and offer scholarships, and sponsor students, it is equivalent to what Oprah did or other Western CEOs may do.

Oprah never built the roads and water system in South Africa or where she lives in the US.

So far as the company he worked for paid their allotted and negotiated dues and taxes including some that are meant to go to the localities, he has done nothing wrong.

A friend told me on phone today that in addition to the gambling which led Ashanti to collapse, Sam Jonah had convinced Kufuor to release some contract in the agreement which gave Ghana some 12% we call poison pill, making Ghana have a say if the company was sold. Three months after the contract was released, Sam Jonah was able to lead Ashanti to be bought by Anglo-Gold and Government of Ghana had no say. Sam was rewarded as the CEO of Anglo-Gold, after two years of which he resigned or was fired or retired, with an estimated more than $100 million in hand (my own projections).

Some people are just not interested to influence society. If Sam was one of them, fine. However a CEO of any organization is leadership. People do not become leaders of any organization, without by definition, influencing others. It is possible Sam Jonah was so removed that the could care a hoot about influencing society also. If he sought reliable electricity with designed redundancy for his factory area, question is why did he not seek the same for others? Why did he not seek to influence change in society where it was obvious people were living in sub-human condition and roads were not well done and so forth? Assuming he supported Kufuor with money,, and Kufuor won, wouldn’t he have some pet projects he would like Kufuor to work on and hence influence change which would also affect other people?

It is a puzzle for me, but honestly, I think it is unfair to blame him for the failure of our government to levy enough taxes, assuming they were not enough, to develop the local mining areas. Period! GOVERNMENT HAS ROLE!! I wrote a book on this!!

In America large trucks are required to gear off the highway after every so many hundreds of miles and weigh their truck and goods,, and they are taxed based on the weight! Cool way to let eh big boys pay more since they ruin the roads for all of us.

Why can’t we use our minds also?

Why can’t we elect those who care?

It is our fault! And not that of Sam Jonah, and assuming he was selfish, he was not violating any laws. Moreover he did charity work also,, which makes it hard to call him selfish. Well,, who am I to judge! I guess it was not in our cards to get rich,, else ,,,
