Outspoken member of the governing New Patriotic Party, Kennedy Agyapong, has accused Ministers of his party of scheming to destroy former Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko, prior to his dismissal from office.

Although he failed to mention any name, Agyapong, who is also the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, said he has information that the ministers in question plotted Agyarko’s downfall during a meeting at Alisa hotel.

“NPP ministers went to meet journalists at Alisa hotel to destroy Boakye Agyarko. But I think he is okay, he doesn’t have a problem. When he was not a minister he survived. I think he is a good man but his era has ended. Let him move on,” he said on Ekosii sen on Asempa FM on Tuesday.

Akufo-Addo on Monday, August 6, 2018, sacked Boakye Agyarko for supposedly misleading government on the new Ameri agreement sent to Parliament.

The new deal sought to bring a new company on board to handle some power plants managed by Ameri Energy.

But some stakeholders within the sector kicked against the deal claiming it was a total ripoff.

The Director of Communications at the presidency, Eugene Arhin, said Boakye Agyarko’s dismissal was due to his handling of the reviewed AMERI agreement.

“In a nutshell, it [the dismissal] is to do with the issue of the controversial AMERI deal. That is why the President has relieved the Minister for Energy of his position,” he said.

But Kennedy Agyapong said he believes Mr. Agyarko was hounded out of office because there was a lot of pressure on the president to fire him.

“Whether you like it or not he [Agyarko] is a brilliant guy and you can’t take it away from him today or tomorrow. They don’t like good people. In Ghana, if you speak the truth like Boakye Agyarko people will not like you. There was a lot of pressure on the president,” he said.

Don’t accept any position again

Kennedy Agypong also advised Mr. Agyarko not to accept any government portfolio again.

“I don’t think he has to accept any post again. Why do you want people to ridicule you? Is that the only way he can serve?”
