Attached is a dribble(gif) showing a user's reaction to splash screens.
That got me asking, are splash screens relevant in today's mobile-app-centric  world.
Some applications ditch them (Hangouts), whiles others still keep them (G+).

As a developer, what influences your decision in keeping/letting go of the splash screen?

There's a blog post title in here somewhere. :) +all-tech-bloggers

That's true Efo Kirk, and the many points raised in that article linked above says it.
And yet splash screens still persists. Why? Case in point the Google+ app on a recently refreshed 6.0 (Marshmallow). IMO an app from foremost experts/pacesetters in all things android.

Google is trying to follow their material design spec. They call it Launch screens in the design spec.
The new Launch screen pattern that Google is now embracing in its new apps was a major discussion on reddit.

But with Google starting to bring back splash screens -- as they played a major part in frowning upon splash screens, I don't think makes splash screens cool.

Whether splash screen or no splash screens, what evilish is it? I hardly recognize apps with splashs and those without.

For me, its presence is negligible. I wouldn't ask for it in my app, neither will I command to take it off if/when added.

Surprised to see a discussion balloon around mere splash screens.

Trust me, splash screens are going to be a core part of web pages in coming years. You can or might laugh at me, but look Google frowning on splash screens some time ago, but now gradually embracing? Well, days are coming, when you wake up from bed, the first thing you'll see is a splash screen with a list including your toothbrush on.

"the first thing you'll see is a splash screen with a list including your toothbrush on." -- Then it's no longer a splash screen.

Splash screens are useful if you have to preload data and it might be fast or slow dependent on the
system resources, so don't worry about whether its needed or not worry about if you can preload
fast enough that you don't need it.

So then it all comes down to whether the splash screen is relevant to the user?

Because as an end user, if I see a splash/launch screen that only creates a perception that the app is taking a while to load itself, that'd be more annoying than a splash screen that shows useful information then.
