Hello champs,

What do you think about RLG's Hope City? Are you excited about it?

The biggest bone of contention is the reported $10 billion project cost and the level of involvement of the Ghana government on the financial side.

Given the nature of discussions we have here, do we think these 25000 jobs that will be created would leverage our tech community well? With potentially more RLG devices to come (with Uhuru and all), will this give our developers more market opportunity? Would you contribute some money to buy RLG shares to help fund this $10 billion project? :-D

Holla,

Ato.

Great PROJECT.... But if it goes beyond politics and RLG also goes beyond, assembling hardware to software development... then it will be worth the noise.

I don't see passion in all this. All I see is some one or some people building an empire from what we love. and because we love it and they dont, it will just be another successful failed project. Like, just another person tryna be rich over us... its sad and we cant stop it so I say we might as well start planning and really own a huge part of it.

I feel like giving a whole speech on this...

Emmanuel i second your speech ooo. I think it isnt a bad idea but the systems is what am crying for. With this dumsooor saga, does that mean there is going to be power generation to run the city cos 75 floors isnt a joke for stairs ooo.

Oh I never heard of anything like that coming to Ghana oh.
To many it might sound good news, but in real sense its gonna compound issues.
If ECG decides to provide energy for the hope city then it means ato, and eshun and Jephthah will be cut off power. Lol

You see why our leaders make so many wrong decision?
Its because they have never done computer programming so don't worry.

Let's wait and see. Tif the hope city turns out good, fine, if not let's watch. There is very minimal you and I can do to alter such decisions

am not even concerned about electricity cos whichever way it will be provided. the president never sleeps in darkness yet we have light. the issue here is what is the actual aim of it and how is it going to benefit us. most definitely people are going to be used like a 1980 benz in 2013... but what do we get back? what difference is it with our current status. how is this project helping anyone HONESTLY!

Brethren,
We need to work on our IP laws. Why should Ghanaians need to file for a patent in Zimbabwe? As usual, I bet no one has taken time to see if we have the proper legislature in place to enable our tech community thrive. Without the proper laws in place, only fools will invest!!!.

guys, focus! I feel like we are deviating from the main questions here. Here is a review of the discussion thread;

COMMENT: The biggest bone of contention is the reported $10 billion project cost and the level of involvement of the Ghana government on the financial side.

1. What do you think about RLG's Hope City?

2. Are you excited about it?

3. Given the nature of discussions we have here, do we think these 25000 jobs that will be created would leverage our tech community well?

4. With potentially more RLG devices to come (with Uhuru and all), will this give our developers more market opportunity?

This is a good idea but it seems it has too many question marks. Government's involvement, Tech stakeholders, energy plant, and now earthquake issues. Dunno what to think again.

Ghana's IT giant, Rlg Communications, launched a $10bn IT Hub project today. The HOPE city project is located at Dukunaa off the Mallam-Kasoa road, Accra-Ghana.

These are facts you may not know about the project:

1.HOPE city is the acronym of Home Office People Environment.

2.It will create jobs for over 300million youth in Africa.

3.HOPE city will  have facilities for accommodation, offices, sports as well as spacious demarcated areas for lifestyle, education and creativity.

4. 50,000 people will work at HOPE city and will host 25,000 inhabitants.

5.It is on a plot of 100,000 sqm, developing a total Gross Floor  Area of approximately 1,200,000 sqm, for a total built area of approximately 1,500,000 sqm.

6.There will be six towers of different dimensions. A tower of 270 m height comprising:75 storeys; the highest in Africa, two towers of 216 m height (60 storeys) and three towers of 152 m height (42 storeys).

Unfortunately, this may be a disappointing news for people below 15 years and above 24 years, because Rlg is seeking this:

7.Rlg is seeking to collaborate with Microsoft in a new initiative to create economic opportunities for 300 million youth in Africa between the ages of 15 and 24.

However, some mixed reactions are coming up after some few hours of Rlg launching the project. Whiles some Techies are praising the move by Rlg, others claim this project would not propel Ghana to join other known IT nations.

Notwithstanding, those in support of the project are the majority.

What are your thoughts?

Why do they need to build 75 and 60-storey buildings? That seems to be more for show than for practicality. Like Tornam said, if the power ever, ever goes out on a workday, the people on those upper floors will be screwed.

I'm wondering, why does this need to be a separate "city" development? Like others mentioned, I'm also wondering what their plan is to power the development -- imagine all the generators and fuel it would take to power that "city" when load shedding happens then as it is now.

I'm wondering what the Department of Urban Roads/Ministry of Transport's plan is to accommodate this sort of development in terms of transport infrastructure and planning -- serious traffic!

And to really launch a set of skilled youth with ICT expertise, why aren't they (also) setting up new ICT departments, or working to improve existing ones, at Legon, KNUST, UCC, Ashesi, etc? Or is this happening? It would make sense to have some sort of coordinated initiative like that to complement this project. It's also  something that would build their brand and develop their workforce -- imagine RLG-sponsored ICT departments at various schools, all over the country. Perhaps this is a silly question, but are there/will there be enough potential employees with the requisite ICT skills they are looking for? If not, they need to start thinking about investing in that too, no? Or get ready for a mass incoming of even more Nigerians into Ghana :)

Also, what is the Government of Ghana's level of involvement, precisely?

Best,
Victoria

@Vicki,
Are you suspecting that RLG might recruit foot soldiers because of the government's involvement? That would be funny.
On a more serious note, I would like to know what exactly their entry requirements are. Please share if you have that info.

Thank you Kwame.
lots of times...I see people here and in other developer groups make comments based on sentiments and not facts. I see people criticise without attempting or making the effort to solve problems.
How many of guys here have approached RLG with an idea to partner them and churn out solutions, how many of you have looked at the flaws of RLG or even the government as a opportunity to solve the problem, make a difference and earn something ultimately?
Solve Problems ,Innovate and Be the difference.....whining won't get us anywhere. I wish y'all a wonderful week.
Cheers!

Or you think the engineers and planners are not smart enough to think beyond what you guys are saying ?

The point is, let's such sentiment be based on informed decisions.

Too bad it worked out that way for you.
I don't know your approach but for some of us , it worked out well. Though I must admit there are some a**holes(excuse my language) at RLG and we about them so we found a way to by pass them.
Again with the government, you need to take the right approach or meet decision makers. Trust me , we've all had our share of government officials not being receptive but just like wooing a girl, we must strategize and keep trying until she says yes...Never Give Up. We are in a fight to make the difference regardless .

I think the Hope City Project is a loudable one, however I wonder why  it should be set up in the Greater Accra Region.

Why dont we have a Hope City in Kumasi, another one in the Volta region and perhaps a third one in any of the three northern regions.

How do you give hope to the entire nation by centralizing a project in an already crowded area?

Accra is not Ghana it is only a part of Ghana. There is already an ICT incubation facility in Ghana Multimedia center(Ghana House). This would deepen the migration to the south.

This is also confirms our age-old problem, lack of proper planning, when was this project conceived how come it finds space where its being developed?

Its a good idea but it has to be cited well to benefit all and sundry.

Nehemiah and Co,

Please is I should ask have you also made an attempt to approach RLG?  I sure you have not. So you whin on the whinning of others!

Lets send a proposal to the RLG, Ministry of Local Government, Ministry of Water Resources works and  Housing etc, Ministry of Communications etc to offer alternatives.

I guess GTUG would be taken more serious than an individual.

Cheers!!

The project is not going to be cited in Kasoa. Its to be located at Dunkonaa. The land is owned by SSNIT. It was initially meant for a housing project.

Its not too late to make changes to any good plan. After all the plan is not a constitution or cast in stone. I hope I dont sound harsh!!

There are other issues that might be overlooked, accomodation for the 2500 plus who would work at the City, water supply, electricity etc.

Accra is said to be on an earthquake zone, I have not heard of Tamale, Ho, or Kumasi being on earthquake zones.
We dont have to put more people on an overcrowded, slum-like city with rampant water shortages, unreliable electricity supply, congested roads etc.

Nehemiah do you get my point?

Michael
