Greetings Everyone,
I met with Dr. Agbényiga today and we discussed your projects for
Ghana. She clarified some the roles for the different projects. See
below. Please send ME your materials list and project ideas by
WEDNESDAY. I have to send this to Dr. Agbényiga and BASICS.
1. I have posted the excel worksheet which has who is working on the
different projects on Google and on ANGEL
2. Some of you have sent lists of materials for your projects, and
you have mentioned websites and/or curriculums as a teaching aide.
Before you arrive in Ghana, please print out at least one good copy of
these materials on the websites or curriculums. We can make copies if
you need them in Ghana but we need at least one physical copy.
3. If you are developing a program or doing an activity that involves
a MAC computer, please remember the computers at BASICS are PCs and
it might be difficult to transfer materials between the two systems.
Remember, the projects that you are working on will be continued after
you leave and we want to make sure that the people at BASICS are able
to do these activities when you are not there.
4. Tutoring and Elementary education people (leaders and support),
many of the children that you will be working with might be classified
as “high risk” for failing in school. Some of these kids are reading
below their grade level or are struggling to understand basic math,
vocabulary, and language development. As you are thinking about your
activities and materials try to find curriculums or activities that
will help these children acquire these math, vocabulary, and language
skills to meet their grade level. In addition, materials that will
move students from one grade level to the next will also be useful.
5. Those of you that are doing the Administrative project, you will
also be helping BASICS develop a way to track each student’s progress.
So for each student at BASICS , you will be creating a student
profile that teachers can use to track their reading, math etc skills.
Part of creating a student profile is so that the teachers can easily
see what areas the students are having trouble with, receiving help
on, and the activities that they are participating in.
**For example, Kwame is a 12-year-old boy, who has recently started
school. He is having a problem understanding the basic math concepts
(adding, subtracting). Due to his struggles in math, we have noticed
that he has a problem speaking up in class. ***
6. The admin team will work with the other programs and document the
plans for Kwame educational development, his pre/post scores, other
activities that help improve his self-esteem. As you are thinking
about this project, look for materials, computer programs that could
help you document these activities and teach the people at BASICS to
continue this documentation after you leave.
7. The administrative team should also be thinking of team-building
activities that help people collaborate on projects . Team-building
activities should encourage teachers, volunteers, and other affiliated
with BASICS to work together and help student improve in schools,
arts, etc
8. I have not received any suggestions about evaluation and assessment
tools. For each of these activities (especially the educational
development, tutoring and self-esteem teams) we need to find way to
assess student’s development. Please start sending me materials or
suggestion on the different assessment tools that can demonstrate
student’s progress.

9. Dr. Agbényiga also wanted me to stress that theses activities are
not stand alone. They should all relate to each other and help
students at BASICS from a holistic perspective. The tutoring,
elementary development, and self-esteem groups will be working help
students improve their reading, math, vocabulary skills. The music,
performance arts, and visual arts groups will creating activities that
compliment the materials taught by the tutoring, elementary
development and self-esteem groups. We want to make sure the students
are learning the classroom materials in a fun and interesting way. The
administrative team should be in constant communication with everyone
to document and track students’ progress.
10. Those of you that are involved in the Music program or Performance
Arts, if you have the music for your listed activities don’t forget to
bring it. Also, remember the area and context we will be working in.
Chokor is a very impoverished area and items such as drums and other
music instruments might not easily accessible or useful to children on
a day to day, but creating a song or poem that helps them learn
something educational would be much appreciated.
That it for today. Don’t forget to look at the “things to bring”
sheet as you are packing for Ghana. Thanks everyone for getting back
to me so quickly. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact
me.
