Good Morning Everybody,

I just got back from running some errands in Truckee and the good news is that this morning the sky is clearer than we have seen in several weeks. Last night on my drive back from Reno there was a definite haze in the air as I got to Truckee (it was even worse in Reno) and you could smell the smoke in the air. But today, so far at least, that is all gone and it is much clearer with no trace of the smoke.

Generally mornings are clearer and the haze increases as the day wears on, but even taking that into consideration I would say today is considerable better than what we've experienced over the last week.

So at this point I would say that if you were hesitant about coming to Tahoe to train because of the smoke then I wouldn't cancel your trip because if these conditions keep up it will be a nice weekend to train. Mornings are probably best to get in the bulk of your workout but that's usually the case anyway. And the temps are perfect - about 45 degrees around 7 AM and hitting about 60 around 10 with a high in the mid 70s.

Also, below is an email from Jeff at Boost Swimming about his clinics leading up to IMLT.

Have fun and be safe,

Tom

I hope everyone’s training is going swimmingly! For those living and/ or training in Tahoe, I know the smoke has been a major challenge. We are planning on holding all of our scheduled clinics and will make a determination as to our plan based on conditions that morning. I will post an update on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/boostswimming) one hour prior to the start of the workout. Please check this page before heading to the beach. We will do one of three things:

1)      Workout as planned
2)      Modify the workout with more of a technique emphasis and lower demand
3)      Cancel the session

Refund Policy: If you pre-register for a workout/ clinic that doesn’t happen due to smoke, you have the choice of either a full refund or a future credit toward another workout.

I was on the water this morning and the air was the best we have had since last Thursday. Let’s hope that trend continues! Our emphasis this week is on navigating the race line and sighting. In addition, if conditions permit, we will be encouraging everyone to swim THE FULL 2.4 MILES. You will have 1:20 to do this. For those slower than 1:20, you will do a modified distance, so don’t be intimidated.

“Do I have to be signed up for Ironman to attend one of the Boost workouts?” – Absolutely not! These workouts are designed for anyone wanting to improve. We just ask that you be comfortable swimming 400 meters without stopping.

Below is our schedule for the month of September. We have a few exciting new opportunities coming up during next month in addition to our normal Friday workout!

Friday, August 30th               9:00 am – 10:30 am      Open Water Workout on the IM Tahoe Course
Friday, September 6th          9:00 am – 10:30 am      Open Water Workout on the IM Tahoe Course
Friday, September 13th        9:00 am – 10:30 am      Open Water Workout on the IM Tahoe Course
Saturday, September 14th   8:00 am – 10:00 am       Freestyle Clinic in Angels Camp (adults)
Saturday, September 14th   11:00 am – 2:30 pm        All Strokes Clinic in Angels Camp (kids)
September 16th – 21st           7:30 am – 8:30 am         IM Tahoe Warm-up
September 21st                       8:30 am – 10:30 am       Course Familiarity Boat Rides

Notice that during the week of Ironman, we will be providing coached warm-ups from 7:30 am – 8:30 am Monday – Saturday. Also, assuming the course is set up early according to plan, I will be taking anyone interested out for a tour of the course in our boat on Saturday morning. This will be a great way to pick landmarks and see what the wind and water is like out on the course without having to swim the full 1.2 miles the day prior to the race. This service is for Boost Swimming clients only (if you are getting this email, this means you!) I will have a sign-up sheet available at our Friday morning workouts beginning September 6th.

If you feel like your stroke needs a tune-up heading into the end of the race season, we also offer private instruction in Truckee at the Community Pool. If interested, contact Jeff at je...@boostswimming.com.

See you all on the beach!!!

-Jeff

Hi Tom,

Thanks for this update. Great news about the weather and air quality. Fingers crossed it stays that way and the firefighers have favorable conditions over the weekend!

As for the Boost clinic, several of us attended during the 4th of July holiday and had a great experience. I can easily say it was the best $20 I've spent in awhile.
