Hi all,

This is just a quick note to let you all know that I've update the
ggplot2 book available from http://had.co.nz/ggplot2/book/. This is
the version of the book that will actually appear in press (i.e. it's
now to late to make any changes). I'll keep it up until it's actually
available in stores, but if you're really keen you can already
preorder it on amazon - http://tinyurl.com/ggplot2-book.

Regards,

Hadley

Congratulations! It must be quite a relief.

Just opened the file and I'm impressed by all the additions and
changes since the last version. I can't wait to get a paper copy in
August.

Thanks,

baptiste

Looks great, Hadley.

I am going to pre-order a copy on Friday (when I get paid ;). It's
the least I can do for this awesome package.

I'd be very interested if you could relate the story of the book's
publication, from conception until now; I don't know much about how
books like this get created. Did you consider publishing it through a
service like lulu.com, or is the proofing, design, promotion help that
Springer provides worthwhile?

Thanks,
James

When is the ggplot book going to be out for sale? I guess my question is If I order now when would I get it.

All I know from Springer is that it will be out by the JSM at the
start of August. I'll let you know more as I get updates from
Springer.

Yes, I definitely considered publishing through lulu.com. The
copyediting and promotion that Springer provides is helpful, but the
main reason I went with an academic publisher is so that I get
academic credit - instead of writing the book I could have written a
lot of papers, and to get tenure in 6 years I need to be thinking
about my research output.

If the ggplot2 book is successful, and if I decided to write another
book, the model I would attempt to negotiate with the publisher is the
one that Paul Murrell took with "Introduction to Data Technologies",
where the electronic version is made available under a creative
commons license.

I just did my pre-order and got an estimated shipping date of July 21,
2009; but who knows :)

Pre-order is good because publishers use it as a key gauge of demand,
it also counts for sales numbers in the first month, which bumps books
up into positions where some distributors automatically order them ...
at least that's what I heard, without having any insider knowledge.

I think that's just based on the preliminary date given to them by
Springer. I'm not sure how reliable that date is.

Cool, thanks for the pre-order then :) I'm also hoping that a few
people will write some amazon reviews too (hint hint ;)
