one legend for multiple plots

Hello,

does anybody knows a good solution, when having multiple plots and one shared legend?

I'm looking for examples plots on where to position the legend and a clever way of scripting it.

the way I do it now is using multiplot, having the legend on the right side of the actual plot. 

pdf("plot.pdf", width = 12, height = 24)

multiplot(a,b,c,d,cols=1)

dev.off

and remove three of the legends in Photoshop. There is probably a better way.
