I'm running version 2.8.1 of R on a FreeBSD i386 machine. Just got
started with Wickham's book ("ggplot2") but unable to plot even the
most basic stuff. For example,

> qplot(carat, price, data=diamonds)

returns the following message:

Error in .Primitive("[")(dots[[1L]][[1L]], dots[[2L]][[1L]]) :
invalid subscript type 'list'

Any insights and help is highly appreciated.

You don't say which version of ggplot2 you're using. That is a
positively ancient version of R though, and my guess is the problem is
due to that.

I just downloaded and installed ggplot2 from one of the CRAN mirror
sites, so it's the latest version. I'll update R to the latest version
and report back. However, it would be nice to understand the source of
the problem.

The source of your problem is that your version of R is too old.
