Hi,

I'm looking for recommendations of books or other training materials to learn ggplot2; for a total of no more than $300. I'm new to R and graphics but am an experienced SAS and SQL programmer. Are there any training videos or courses? I am just completing the Coursera course on R so have just acquired a foundation, but need to be able to do presentation quality graphics for my work using ggplot2 and thus want to come up to speed fairly quickly.

Hot off the shelves, Winston's book on R graphics:

A lot of material available in help files, github and ggplot2 website.

Cheers,
Roman

Hi Roman -

Thanks for plugging the book! A small correction, though: the material in the book is actually different from the material on the website -- the book covers a lot more material than what I have on the website.

Hi Mary,

Besides Winston Chang's great new book (I have 2 copies), here are 3 more books in my "using ggplot2 while on a desert island" library:

Michael Crawley, "The R Book, 2nd Edition" ($79.99 at Amazon.com, released Dec 26, 2012) has 2 great chapters on plots. While the plots in Chapter 5 aren't using ggplot2, they give good ideas for plots. Chapter 29 is about changing the look of plots which has a really good section on the ColorBrewer which ggplot2 can make use of. At 1076 pages & 4.8 pounds Crawley's new book is an extensive compendium of many R analysis and graphics. Plus, the 2nd Edition is in color so it's now much easier to read as the examples have the R code in red and the output in blue.

Robert Muenchen, "R for SAS and SPSS Users", ($74.95 at Amazon) is a good book for SAS users using R. Chapter 20 is Graphics Overview and Chapter 22 is Graphics with ggplot2. This chapter was written by Hadley Wickham the creator of ggplot2. I think it is a clearer explanation on the basics of using ggplot2 than what is in his own ggplot2 book.

Hadley Wickham, "ggplot2: Elegant Graphics for Data Analysis (Use R!)", ($56.92 at Amazon) is the foundation book for using ggplot2 and should be in your ggplot2 library. I used this book to teach myself ggplot2, but think it's a better book for using ggplot2 after you know and have used ggplot2 awhile rather than for trying to learn ggplot2.
