I'm plotting some data, where facets have a "location" name. Several location levels have a localized character (š, č or ž) and I've noticed they are not displayed correctly. I've fiddled around with options("encoding" = "UTF-8") but got me nowhere. Has anyone experienced a similar problem and maybe found a way how to circumvent it? I've had a similar problem with writing to a pdf a while ago.

For instance, this facet should read "Menišija", but instead I get "MeniL..ija" (š was translated to "L..").

Any advice much appreciated.

Cheers,
Roman

I found this happened often when I was importing the data into a dataframe. I remember the solution was to add check.names=F to my read.delim() and if you had special characters in your facets I think you might need to use backticks as well. Got a simple example to play with?

Thanks for bothering with this. Was your data.frame displaying the correct characters? I can see all the names just fine and dandy, the problem ensues when plotting. In any case, I'm attaching a small example.

my.sample <- data.frame(Location = rep(c("Menišija", "Železniki"), each = 3), SampleTypeL = c("scats", "urine", "saliva"), NumAnimals = c(5, 5, 5, 1, 2, 3))
ggplot(my.sample, aes(x = SampleTypeL, y = NumAnimals, group=Location)) +
geom_line() + geom_point() + facet_grid(Location ~.)

I should point out that I'm using Eclipse+StatET. When I run the code in R gui things work time. Thank you for your time, Brandon.
