Thanks again Hadley,

Changing the faceting to facet_grid(location ~ date) was simply
excellent solution.
No need for jitter and using the basic scatter plot now says it all.

For your book cover you might add:

GGPLOT has revolutionized the way field ecologists can display data!
The perceived cost of the up front learning curve is off-set by an
excellent book covering virtually all eventualities.

Hi Hadley and all,

The more I play with settings the more powerful I realize what an awesome set of tools Hadley developed with ggplot2!
Is there going to be a need for a
ggplot2 anonymous group for addicts in the future? :-)

I am re-reading the book and still not clear how to define the plot sizes (make the facet boxes wider) and how to rotate the yAxis labels since they are over printing and if rotated 90° CCW should be legible.
When I use
theme_set(theme_bw()) all looks great except the Y axis legend is no longer centered as when plotted with the color and drops to bottom of plot.

See current iteration of plot.
Getting Very very close !

These are the code lines used and adopted from what Hadley provided previously fro handling the times corectly.

# This plot changes the facet grid to single panel for summary
# location for comparing species works.
# on the y axis is Time needs to be re-centered??
ggplot(All, aes(Date, elapsed, colour = Location)) +
  geom_jitter() +
  facet_wrap(~ Species)
#adding the ylab line works.
breaks <- (1:24) * 3600
labels <- paste(c(19:23, 0:18), "00", sep = ":")
f=jpeg(file="All_plot.jpg")
ggplot(All, aes(Species, elapsed,)) +
  geom_point() +
  facet_grid(. ~ Location) +
  scale_y_continuous(breaks = breaks, labels = labels) + ylab("Time")
dev.off()

Hi,

I mentioned this offset on the list a few days ago. It seems to be a
glitch in theme_bw() from the latest release. In the meantime, you can
correct it manually,

theme_bw <- function(base_size = 12) {
structure(list(
axis.line = theme_blank(),
axis.text.x = theme_text(size = base_size * 0.8 , lineheight
= 0.9, vjust = 1),
axis.text.y = theme_text(size = base_size * 0.8, lineheight
= 0.9, hjust = 1),
axis.ticks = theme_segment(colour = "black", size = 0.2),
axis.title.x = theme_text(size = base_size, vjust = 1),
axis.title.y = theme_text(size = base_size, angle = 90, vjust = 0.5),
axis.ticks.length = unit(0.3, "lines"),
axis.ticks.margin = unit(0.5, "lines"),

legend.background = theme_rect(colour=NA),
legend.key = theme_rect(colour = "grey80"),
legend.key.size = unit(1.2, "lines"),
legend.text = theme_text(size = base_size * 0.8),
legend.title = theme_text(size = base_size * 0.8, face =
"bold", hjust = 0),
legend.position = "right",

panel.background = theme_rect(fill = "white", colour = NA),
panel.border = theme_rect(fill = NA, colour="grey50"),
panel.grid.major = theme_line(colour = "grey90", size = 0.2),
panel.grid.minor = theme_line(colour = "grey98", size = 0.5),
panel.margin = unit(0.25, "lines"),

strip.background = theme_rect(fill = "grey80", colour = "grey50"),
strip.label = function(variable, value) value,
strip.text.x = theme_text(size = base_size * 0.8),
strip.text.y = theme_text(size = base_size * 0.8, angle = -90),

plot.background = theme_rect(colour = NA),
plot.title = theme_text(size = base_size * 1.2),
plot.margin = unit(c(1, 1, 0.5, 0.5), "lines")
), class = "options")
}

(or install.packages("ggplotpp",
repos="http://R-Forge.R-project.org") to override theme_bw() )
