Introduction

This newsletter highlights some of the developments and results from the Animal Breeding and Genomics Centre of Wageningen UR. You can read about the papers we have recently published and our other outreach activities. In this issue we also introduce you to the new director of Breed4Food. If you have any further questions about our activities after reading this newsletter then please do not hesitate to contact us or one of our scientists.

Breed4Food consortium appoints Bernard De Geus as director

Dr Bernard de Geus has been appointed Director of the Breed4Food consortium. With effect from 1 June 2013 he will lead the research consortium, which is a collaborative effort comprising four animal breeding companies and Wageningen UR.

Vitamin B12 in milk influenced by genetic variation

Results from a study within the ‘Melk op Maat’ project, part of the Dutch Milk Genomics Initiative, have revealed that genetic variation in the vitamin B12 content of milk from dairy cows could potentially provide natural enrichment of this important source of vitamin B12 for human consumption.

Exposure in intestinal models to determine safety and health of food and feed ingredients by gene expression.

Together with Plant Research International, Food and Biobased Research, and RIKILT, ABGC is testing ex vivo and in vitro intestinal model systems to analyse safety and health effects of food and feed ingredients.

Genomic regions associated with insect bite hypersensitivity in two horse populations

Insect bite hypersensitivity (IBH) is the most common allergic skin disease in horses and seriously reduces animal welfare. Genomic regions on several chromosomes associated with insect bite hypersensitivity (IBH) were identified in Shetland ponies and Icelandic horses.

Symposium ‘Genetics of social life: Agriculture meets evolutionary biology’

On 13 May, the Animal Breeding and Genomics Centre organised an international symposium on social genetic effects. Speakers from diverse backgrounds presented their work that focussed on the genetics of social interactions.

Breeding for animal welfare

In order to improve the welfare of animals bred in captivity, researchers from Wageningen UR are working on new breeding programmes together with the sector. The most recent edition of Wageningen World magazine carries an interview with Rita Hoving, Jan ten Napel and Piter Bijma of ABGC.

PhD defences

On 19 June 2013 at 13:30 hours, Trinh Quoc Trong will defend his PhD thesis entitled: ‘Optimization of selective breeding program for Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)’.
