Plant breeding at the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency)

 

 

·         Background to “Plant breeding and genetics” at the IAEA, why is it part of the IAEA mandate.

·         Mechanism by which the IAEA supports its Member States: Coordinated Research Projects (CRPs) and Technical Cooperation Projects (TCPs).

·         An example of a CRP: Mutant varieties for food and feed production.

·         An example of a TCP: Development of mutant wheat varieties resistant to black stem rust, Ug99

·         The work of the Plant Breeding and Genetics Laboratory: R&D, Training and Services in: 

          1) Mutation induction; 2) Mutation detection; and 3) Accelerated breeding

·         Example of accelerated breeding for fodder quality in barley
