Billy & Darryl K.,

As you two are the official GGL Rules Committee, I will ask for clarification on a couple of our rules.

  1. What constitutes a Rain Out?
We seem to vote on this issue and I don’t understand why. In my opinion, if the course is allowing play there is no Rain Out.
We are all playing under the same conditions, we are voting to Not Play. There is nothing in our Rules addressing this.

  2. Why are people who show up on a League night with inclement weather, & the Members vote To Play, but go home anyway, awarded ½ point?
Rule 9  Point Scoring: Everyone playing on league night will be awarded 1/2 point for attendance. They are choosing to not play!

  3. How was it  decided to have a second vote To Play last night?
Once the vote is put forth, I’m assuming after a majority of the members are present, the decision should be final.
If the vote went to Not Play, by a margin of 3 votes, one could wait after 4 Nay voters to leave and call for another vote and win!

I personally don’t understand the mentality to drive all the way to Chippewa, to not play golf when the course is OPEN.

I do understand lightning and possible lightning, but I’m pretty sure Blackhawk would not allow us to go out in a storm.

Hughbone,

There is a sign in the clubhouse that says they are NOT responsible for any one plays in lightning storm.
they will not stop you unless the course is closed.

We may not have a league rule but we have set a protocol on how weather decisions are made.

I  personally like the way we vote and make the decision at the course.  If someone shows up, but decides not to play, I’m ok with them getting 1/2 point.   Course conditions and cart path rules affect everyone differently.

If you want to make a change and add a weather rule bring it up for vote at year end meeting.

Just my 2 cents.

From Genes League Rules email on 4/18/24:

5. Rule Infractions: If you have any dispute about an infraction of the rules bring it to the attention of your opponent at the time it occurs all disputes will be settled by the rules committee (Darryl and Billy) at the completion of the round. Hugh I think I replied yesterday after Gene advised I was on said committee.

I didn’t think that committee was for responding to complaints about Weather!

We talking about weather not games but weather!

Never thought league bitching would be about weather

Ok everyone take a breath.
As I stated yesterday, the 2nd vote was my idea because the weather seemed to be changing rapidly and I didn't want anyone to feel compelled to play.
As far as that goes the vote didn't change the outcome but going forward I won't do it again.

I am somewhat confused as to why this is being brought up now.As Darrell pointed out that even though there is not necessarily an official rule we have been following a protocol for quite a few years now. The reason for the vote is that at times the course may be open but the rain is so bad it would not be much fun to play in, sometimes downright miserable. The reason for members being awarded the half point started an evening the course was open but we had several golfers were not physically able to walk and could not play, out of respect for this they got the half, from that point on all members got the half whether they played or not. The original reason league members got the half point for showing up was to encourage attendance. To address your last point it was a mistake to take the second vote, at that time it started to rain harder a suggestion was made to revote I took the suggestion and had the revote, that is on ME. That will not happen again. Moving forward I would very much appreciate matters such as these addressed at the league meeting where they can be discussed in detail and voted on if deemed necessary. A good example of that would be the way we resolved the way we choose the starting order on Wednesday which I think is working out well.Hope this answers the questions.

All,

I wrote my original email because I too was confused as to how last Wednesday played out. I was seeking clarification, not a rules change.

I have witnessed us on multiple occasions take a vote on whether to call it a League night by playing or not. Since I didn’t know how we decide to call for this vote, I went to our League Rules for an answer. I am not upset with anyone, just asked for clarification, didn’t know this was the wrong forum to ask. But the advantage to asking here is, everyone can hear what is said and go back and read again if misread the first time thru, without emotions clouding our judgement.

I agree we all should exercise our right to vote and make choices. Because we disagree whether someone should get a ½ point or not, doesn’t make me right or wrong. Simply of a different opinion, we should be able to agree to disagree.

I understand now how the second vote came about, which was unknown to a lot of people until Gene’s response. Thank you Gene, for being concerned for everyone’s wellbeing, I am being sincere here.

Hope to see everyone, including you Joe, on Wednesday,

Mudd😊

I think with this issue brought up in all fairness should be addressed this winter meeting.
Dealing with past practice and setting a precedence, we’ve always voted with the folks who attended with the intention to play. The golf course does not necessarily need to be closed, but it’s for the safety of everybody, and those choosing to play or not in the rain or in a storm. We have always done that and honestly that makes it past practice, which makes it binding unless we vote differently.
I think it was more of a courtesy vote when it was established and just because the golf course is open, doesn’t mean its the requirement for the league to play depending on the members votes. Who better to decide whether we play or not then the people who actually going out to play. And as far as the half point goes, that’s always been the reward. Just because it’s what we used to do doesn’t make it right, but it also makes it a process since we didn’t have one in place for certain situations.
