Each grade level/course TEKS crosswalk provides a summary of the TEKS revisions and shows the differences between the 2018 TEKS and the 2022 TEKS being implemented in the 2024-2025 school year. You can access the skills matrices and crosswalks below.

The social studies team at TEA is committed to enhancing opportunities for stakeholder engagement across the state of Texas. Social Studies Stakeholder Engagement Sessions allow the TEA social studies team to expand information sharing and interaction with stakeholders. All social studies stakeholders (parents, teachers, administrators, etc.) are invited to attend by registering below.

Session Description: In this stakeholder engagement session, the TEA social studies team will focus on Celebrate Freedom Week (TEC 29.907), which occurs each year during the week that includes September 17. During this week each year, Texas schools emphasize the values and ideals on which the United States was founded as well as the sacrifices that were made for freedom in the founding of the country. This TEA stakeholder engagement session will highlight Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and required instruction related to Celebrate Freedom Week and instructional resources found on the TEA Celebrate Freedom Week web page.

Personal Financial Literacy and Economics is a one-half credit high school course developed in response to Senate Bill (SB) 1063 and Texas Education Code (TEC), 28.025(b-22). Students may successfully complete either this new course or the Economics with Emphasis on the Free Enterprise System and Its Benefits course to satisfy the half-credit economics requirement for high school graduation. Both economics courses are part of the required secondary curriculum.

The requirement to offer both Economics with Emphasis on the Free Enterprise System and Its Benefits and Personal Financial Literacy and Economics may be reduced to one by the commissioner of education upon application of a school district with a total high school enrollment of less than 500 students. Districts should complete the Request for Reduction in Required Curriculum Course Offerings form and return the form to the Curriculum Help Desk.

Social studies is a scientific approach to the study of history. It assumes that there is a scientific or semi-scientific explanation for human behavior, and that by studying and analyzing the behavior of human beings in the past, we can fully understand human beings and perhaps even manipulate human behavior to prevent bad things from happening in the future. Social studies tends to be focused on change or improvement, and it rests on the idea that by studying the past we can ensure a brighter future. Social studies tends to study groups of people rather than individuals, and it looks to draw generalizations and identify trends or themes over time.

A social studies teacher is distant and removed, treating the people and events of the past as objects to be analyzed. The social studies teacher collects data points and speaks broadly about themes and eras. The social studies teacher hopes or expects that mastery of these data points will result in a full understanding of human beings, and that that full understanding can be used to improve the human condition. Perhaps unconsciously, the social studies teacher teaches students to be distant from the subject, too. Like the social scientist, these students must memorize, master, and analyze so that they can make use of their knowledge. Knowledge in the social studies classroom is above all a tool.

Sitting through a great history lesson is exciting. It is suspenseful. There is a lot of energy in the room. The students are thrilled, and their minds are racing, but they are listening in rapt attention for the whole period. At the end of the story they are dying to know what happens next, or they are left with some big question to ponder on their own.

Now, becoming an excellent teacher of history is the work of a lifetime. Almost none of us are able to teach an excellent history lesson every time in the first years of teaching. But, improving as a teacher is delightful work, and important work, too. We at Hillsdale College are here to help.

The Utah Standards for Social Studies reflect the content, concepts, and skills considered essential for all students, and follow the purpose of social studies education, as explained by NCSS: Using an inquiry-based approach, social studies helps students examine vast human experiences through the generation of questions, collection and analysis of evidence from credible sources, consideration of multiple perspectives, and the application of social studies knowledge and disciplinary skills. As a result of examining the past, participating in the present, and learning how to shape the future, social studies prepares learners for a lifelong practice of civil discourse and civic engagement in their communities. Social studies centers knowledge of human rights and local, national, and global responsibilities so that learners can work together to create a just world in which they want to live.

The term "literacy" is too often considered solely an English Language Arts term. In fact, literacy is a term that transcends disciplines. Disciplinary literacy plays a crucial role in the cultivation of informed, responsible participants in political life - competent citizens who are committed to the fundamental values and principles of representative democracy (as explained in Utah Code 53G-10-204). We must have historically literate students, with all the skills essential to understand and appreciate the rich tapestry of human history. We must have geographically literate students who are able to understand the world around them. Clearly, economic literacy is essential for the well-being of our students and nation. Civic literacy is essential for the sustaining of our democratic republic.

The Utah Standards for Social Studies reflect the content, concepts, and skills considered essential for all students. The newly revised secondary social studies standards were adopted in the December 2016 Utah State Board of Education (USBE) meeting.

The Utah State Board of Education, in partnership with Southern Utah University (SUU), offers a full slate of social studies endorsement courses designed to provide Utah educators with rigorous course content eligible for higher education credit, while allowing maximum flexibility for participants. Courses are offered three times a year: Fall, starting in September and ending in December; Spring, starting in January and ending in April, and Summer, starting in May and ending in August. These courses demand considerable work per week per course. Therefore, educators may only register for two courses per term. However, with careful planning, it should be possible to complete endorsement requirements in a timely manner.

Credit

These courses are eligible only for college credit through SUU. Upon course completion, the instructor will submit grades to SUU and credit will be recorded on an official transcript available for you to order. There is no requirement that participants be matriculated students at SUU. Any licensed Utah K-12 teacher can register; however, these courses are designed for teachers who are currently teaching and desiring to add to their licensed endorsements.

The United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) is an amazing opportunity for motivated student leaders to have direct contact with the highest-level elected and appointed officials in the nation. Sponsored by the Senate and funded and administered by The Hearst Foundations since 1962, the USSYP mission is to encourage the best and brightest students in America's high schools to pursue careers in public service.

Two student leaders from each state will spend a week in Washington experiencing their national government in action. All transportation, hotel and meal expenses will be provided by The Hearst Foundations. In addition, each delegate will also be awarded a $10,000 college scholarship for undergraduate studies, with encouragement to pursue coursework in history and political science.

High school juniors and seniors may qualify to apply through leadership positions they currently hold per the USSYP official criteria for the current 2023-2024 academic year. All student leadership qualifying positions are subject to the judgement of the state selection administrator and will be verified and confirmed.
