installing GFortran on Ubuntu

Hi
I am trying to install GFortran on Ubuntu linux and unfortunately I
cannot remember my root password so I am installing it instead in just
a folder under my user account folder structure. Is anyone aware with
any problems in installing it that way?

ps. what is the difference between GFortran and the other GNU Fortran
and g95 fortran compilers? are they connected or separate efforts?
