“Swami Vivekananda recognised that India could scale greater heights, which was reflected in his thinking and speeches, at a time when the nation was plagued by poverty and numerous famines. Such being the case, there is no reason why we cannot achieve the same again,” said noted columnist S Gurumurthy here on Saturday.

Speaking at a function organised by the Initiative for Moral and Cultural Training (IMCT) at Meenakshi College for Women, he said that if a nation is to emerge as a global model it needs grounding in its culture and ethos. In this regard, he said a CIA think-tank study has predicted that India, along with US and China, would emerge as the global power centres by 2030.

He was optimistic that the nation would emerge stronger in the face of a spate of corruption scandals across the country. “This is evident in whatever growth the nation has posted in the recent years, despite widespread corruption,” he said.

In a corollary, S Vaidhyasubramaniam, dean (planning and development) of Sastra University, Thanjavur, said that the society must lead the way for the State.  “If society is to progress, it must come from the individual. The need to channelise goodness in oneself is paramount.”

Also present on the occasion were Sathguru Swami Gnanananda Sarasvathi, founder trustee of the Sri Gnana Advaitha Peetam, and chairperson of Rajalakshmi Educational Institutions, Thangam Meghanathan.

Winners of competitions for school students held during the Fifth Hindu Spiritual and Service Fair 2013 in February  were felicitated. Cash prizes of `7,000, `5,000 and `3,000 were presented to winners.
