The playstyle of a magic user, especially for the early DnD versions, is based on preparation: The choice of what spells to memorize for the coming adventure is an extremely significant one. It is, (with only a bit of exaggeration) basically the main gameplay part of being a magic user. All other actions and choices are either in support of that choice, or executions of that choice.
The first choice should be spells that allow the magic user to avoid entering combat altogether, like Sleep. Because that is their niche, and their way to meaningfully contribute, by providing functionality the other classes can't. The fighter can just hack at things. If something is too tough to hack away, the fighter is out of options. The magic user can put that encounter to sleep and walk right past.
Life is short. Youth is finite. You have every opportunity to make the most of the life you have right now. Your choices today will determine the number of regrets you will have in the next ten years.
You're also given a series of questions that will determine Sora's stats and abilities, as well as one bonus query if you've purchased the Re Mind DLC. If Kingdom Hearts 3 is your first experience with the series, or you just want to know what these starting choices really mean, we're here to let you know.

To reiterate, you'll only be asked two questions in Kingdom Hearts 3's beginning choices segment unless you have purchased the Re Mind DLC. That third question operates entirely separately from the initial pair, but we'll get into that shortly.
And if this is your first foray, don't worry - these questions aren't so weighty as to tilt the game into vastly separate experiences per player choice. As you'll see, they impact the game, but they don't drastically effect it.
Your first choice is phrased somewhat cryptically, asking what you desire most. Your choices are Wisdom, Vitality, and Balance. You can probably intuit which answers will boost which stats, but here's the technical breakdown:
Because of how powerful magic is in Kingdom Hearts 3, Wisdom is the best choice if you intend to maximize your magic spells in battle. If you're more of a melee-type player who only casts the occasional Cure, Vitality will do you just fine.
Your next choice determines what abilities Sora will learn as you level up and progress through the game. This is the most subjective question to answer because they are all suited to different playstyles. It's best to pick an option that complements your first choice if possible.
These won't impact your entire KH3 run to the same degree as the first choice, but pick whichever one will complement your ideal build as a caster, DPS (damage-per-second), or tank (defensive powerhouse), respectively.
With the arrival of the Re Mind DLC, a new feature called the Premium Menu has been added that allows you to modify the difficulty of the game beyond the original parameters of Beginner, Standard, and Proud. These fresh aspects can be used to either raise the challenge or even lower it. Here's what each choice means:
This choice unlocks the Premium Menu options that can make the game way, way harder. Obviously, this is recommended for veteran players going through the game for a second or third time. HP and MP Slip cause their respective stats to decrease over time. Zero Defense, No Cure, No Links, and No Battle Items are fairly self-explanatory. There's even an option called Ability Limit that reduces the maximum number of abilities Sora can install to 30.
Since you'll be facing a lot of undead and ranged shooters, the 30 Orc Chieftains might be a good choice. There are also a lot of wandering stacks of Orcs and Orc Chieftains so having some in your army will make them more likely to join you, especially if you have the Diplomacy skill. Personally, I always use Cyclops and Cyclops Kings if I want a ranged troop so I picked the 5 Ogres. However, both are viable alternatives so pick the one that fits your playing style.
By choosing AMD, you might be able to get more bang for your buck than if you were to pick an Intel CPU and an Nvidia GPU. So I did it, picking out all the components for a build you could go out and build today for the price of a single GPU.

Because they share a primary stat (Charisma), one of the best choices is the Warlock class. They are the ultimate short rest class, which can balance out the Paladin's dependence on getting a good night's sleep. And yes... smites are warlock spell slot compatible. Choose Pact of the Blade... get to 3rd level... take Improved Pact Weapon... and BOOM: you got a +1 magic weapon.
Barbarian seems like a good choice (cuz they are NOT boring). The Path of the Berserker will give you an extra attack and the Reckless Attack ability will give you advantage on a particularly important smite.

If the bag is bad then so are boots of flying, or teleportation spells, or even healing potions and iron rations. They all trivialize a mechanic in the game designed to be an obstacle for the players. We should be able to make players always have to make a hard choice when playing the game at all times. Or alternately they are all good and perhaps you just picked one mechanic that is a personal irk for you?
