Demo Day | GTD DC May 2018


Date: 16 May 2018

Challenges Forum

Topic:  Person was curious about the number of projects to handle btw work and home

  • We went around the room asking average between 3 or 4 projects work, home, family

    • 10-15 at work on the large end as supervision

    • 6 across home and work

Topic: Personal email organization - the motivation for getting back to inbox zero

  • Categorize

  • Triage; inbox by gmail , Astro  uses machine language

  • Motivation the task can be smaller than you really think


Topic:  11 days off; help planning time and goals that can be achieved; Interests; switching .com services, diet changes, life thoughts, time management

  • Research staycation ideas & combine with productivity

  • Find something in the middle of the day and plan around it like an anchor

  • Decide and commit to X number of things per day; met the goal and the rest of the day is ‘free time’

  • Build a structured day around something personal or get up and get out the house

  • Research project templates on how to manage this amount of free time


Topic: Need good outline app

  • Popular recommendation: work flowy

  • Omni Outliner (Mac/ios only)

  • Tasks (Android)

  • MS Word - using headers and Table of Contents


Topic: Prioritizing when everything is important and urgent

  • Assume your not getting it done what are the consequences in X amount of time?

  • What is the ideal situation and what action would move you towards that?

  • Can you delegate tasks? Can you actually survive if you don’t get it done

  • Remember to say NO to things in advance; filter before it lands on your list

  • Move items to someday/maybe - your committed but at a later time

  • Utilize a Systematic way of looking at things


Topic: The complaining culture at work; how to gracefully exit those type of conversations

  • 6 thinking hats Books: educate the team; engaging everyone different hats different parts of the day; meeting facilitation tool

  • Give a him a time limit of venting

  • Remind him that that language is infectious

  • Establish boundary of what is acceptable communication


Topic: Very familiar with GTD; still a bit OCD and having blinders how to gain a better perspective on the things you don’t enjoy

  • Triggers - Marshall Goldsmith Book Recommendation; around having a standard of excellence

  • Podcast Cortex;  just discussed the book (Episode 66)
