Discussion Topic: Deep and Shallow Work: Is High-Value, Focused Work Deep or Shallow

  • Deepwork is defined is work in which you take long periods of highly focused time to complete the action ; Focused on the weight of the VALUE of what's produced

    • Makes the assumptions that focus is required, time is required

  • We tend to focus more on shallow work these days

  • Being able to engage in deep work is becoming a skill

  • Example: coming up with a million dollar idea in the shower; shallow work can create the same valued idea as deep work

  • Shallow work is very seductive

  • Muscle Memory type activities (e.g learning Tai-Chi) its escalates a natural learning scale as you move up belts but - where is the depth

  • Shallow work is light bc its not as important?

  • Deep work (per Ken) quiet time to really think - isn’t that just a project?

  • Deepwork can be seen as subset of flow

  • Mindfulness exercises help with Focus

  • Looking at the higher horizon to know what the value is of what your working on; more of skills acquisition issue

  • Regarding resiliency (job security) - left brain solution Daniel Pink A whole new brain

  • Professional activities performed in a state of cognitive  ; not flow,  (Grab definition from book) in contrast shallow work cognitively undemanding, logistically style task often performed while distracted

  • 2 core tenants ; quickly master & produce at elite level

  • Book can help you get re-calibrated towards long term goals and make space (head/physical) towards that

  • The book concepts are not just limited to knowledge workers; workforce skills re-development needs to happen in other industries

How do you apply this in your GTD lifestyle:

  • After you get clear - what are you doing after the weekly review

  • Know thy self - know the type of work you need to know; knowing your work styles; your fail points

  • Maintenance level of GTD (opens up the space) so that you can get to taking care of the larger projects

    • Must schedule it with yourself - keep the commitment ( think of like something critical like MORTGAGE< FEEDING THE BABY)

    • Project list - index helps keep a baseline of what type of things I'm doing deep work for

    • Adjudicate workflow issues during the WR window; don’t let it impeded getting the tasks complete (aka don’t fiddle around; keep going on task and capture issue)
