Challenges Forum:

Topic:  Deep Work (defined as: highly focused work investing mental energy)- best strategies trying to build a strategy to implement

  • Utilize brain.FM; binaural beats (e.g Focus music); learns you and has 3 settings' focus, relax and sleep

Topic: Failing at email (added new email addresses; used to be at inbox zero now at 1100 --> 1600 daily emails) need to return to the 2 min rule and process inbox

  • Use keywords and filters to slow the deluge

  • Have corporate use special forward for only key messages

  • Unroll (to help supplement email unsubscribing)

  • Separate into venn-diagram; to help see overlaps

  • You HAVE to give up something but boundaries will become clearer

  • Overwhelmed with data in tool “The Brain” can an index be built? to provide clarity on what’s in there

Main Presentation: Internet of Things (IoT)

Definition per Wikipedia: The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical objects—devices, vehicles, buildings and other items—embedded with electronicssoftwaresensors, and network connectivity that enables these objects to collect and exchange data.[1] The IoT allows objects to be sensed and controlled remotely across existing network infrastructure,[2] creating opportunities for more direct integration of the physical world into computer-based systems, and resulting in improved efficiency, accuracy and economic benefit;[3][4][5][6][7][8] when IoT is augmented with sensors and actuators, the technology becomes an instance of the more general class of cyber-physical systems, which also encompasses technologies such as smart gridssmart homesintelligent transportation and smart cities. Each thing is uniquely identifiable through its embedded computing system but is able to interoperate within the existing Internet infrastructure. Experts estimate that the IoT will consist of almost 50 billion objects by 2020.[9]

  • Current IoT devices

  • Wearables (smart watches)

  • NEST (smart home)

  • Nest protect (smoke detector and auto-light feature)

  • Canary home security

  • Tool like Tile (shortrange blue tooth tracker for personal items)  (geo location)

  • Pitfalls:

  • Falling in love with our objects

  • Not developing fear to weigh in or check in with our apps because of living our lifestyle

  • Trust devices have been government approved; good to know for key home tools

  • Disconnecting when on vacation or away; management of the home

  • Over-reliance can lead to frustrations

  • WIFI consumption (mindful of bandwidth)

  • Voice dialog ; being understood (still a challenge; especially in room with others) ; multiple competition with other devices in room/places

  • BT: Headset Plantronics;

  • Benefits:

  • IFTT used to connect a lot of services and devices

  • Smart things hub (Samsung)

  • Zappier has must-zaps; get notified when automation fails

Resources Sharing:  EMAIL

  • Bing – called email ga.me; works only with google apps and gmail for work (gamification)

  • Dispatch – iOS email connects to a lot of different apps/services

  • Follow up from pairBUS; auto notifies Amazon during price drops; site worked very quickly

  • CloudMagic- works across all devices

  • Using google saved search – manual

  • Google Save (chrome extension) – stronger bookmark tool
