I'm running Seq 1.6.9 and I'm confused about the "show as tag" feature.

I use the same Seq server to log stuff from different applications, each one using its own API key and setting a property App to each different app/environment combination.

I was expecting to have tags right in the log listing showing the value of the App property, but it seems that "show as tag" creates a query and only show the tag when you run the query...

Is this how it supposed to work?

Hi Emiliano!

Yes, this is the intention - I considered making tags "global" but often the tags you want to see depend on the data you're viewing, hence they're part of queries today.

At a hypothetical future point when queries and views are merged (should not be tooooo far away) associating tags with "views" should give much of the experience you're after.

I see. Currently I can't find a good use of the "show as tag" feature.

I just want a way to have colored tags next to the events so I can easily identify which app/environment it belongs to.

I love both Serilog and Seq, but I feel from the first version of Seq I've used that it needs a proper and clear layout to show the events of different apps/environments. Using api keys to apply App properties is good enough, but I think the layout of how these events are distinguished needs more work.

Keep the great work,
Thank you

Thanks Emiliano. I completely agree with your feedback here. Although switching queries/views is a reasonable way to achieve this, a big part of the focus of the next Seq versions will be "scaling up" some parts of the UI like this. Thanks again for the feedback! Nick
