Activist meeting: how do we get from here to PR?

Ā

Hi Roger,

Ā

Best of luck to everyone campaigning in the Makerfield by-election today. While members across the country await the results, we have an invitation for you.

Ā

The need to change our broken voting system has never been so clear. The breakdown of the two-party system is now daily news coverage and modern, multiparty politics is now a reality.

Ā

Dozens of MPs are calling for a National Commission on Electoral Reform and there is a real possibility of bringing in Proportional Representation sooner rather than later.

Ā

But how do we get there? With other organisations, we're holding a meetingĀ  to discuss this question at 18:00, Wednesday 1 July.

Ā

Ā

Register: the path to PR

Ā

The meeting is open to activists and supporters of all organisations in the UK advocating for electoral reform, including Labour for a New Democracy and Labour Campaign for Electoral Reform, Liberal Democrats for Electoral Reform, Make Votes Matter, Unlock Democracy, and more.

Ā

We will give an update on the campaign for PR, including the Representation of the People Bill and levels of public support, before turning to an open discussion of the route to delivering PR.

Ā

What role can a National Commission play? What constitutes a mandate? What does a national conversation about the voting system look like?

Ā

Register here, bring your thoughts and ideas, and join us to discuss.

The Long View: Electoral Reform

Ā

Need something to keep you occupied before the election result comes in? Check out this new episode of The Long View, broadcast on Radio 4 earlier this week.

Ā

Journalist Jonathan Freedland, Dr Robert Saunders (Queen Mary, University of London) and Lucy Fisher (Financial Times) have a fascinating and well informed discussion about the history of the campaign for Proportional Representation - and the latest developments, including calls for a National Commission.

Ā

Ā

Ā

All the best

Ā
