New elections inquiry Dear Roger, Earlier this month, we reported that the Representation of the People Bill went through its Second Reading, entering into the committee stages where MPs will be scrutinising this important piece of legislation. We have learned that an inquiry has just been set up by a powerful Select Committee (Housing, Communities and Local Government) to "examine the health of electoral democracy in the UK, in light of the decline in voter turnout in recent elections and diminishing voter trust in democratic institutions." Crucially? The Committee is accepting evidence from the public. At Make Votes Matter, we all know that the main problem facing "the health of electoral democracy in the UK" is our broken and outdated voting system. The thing is, the Representation of the People Bill, in its current form, does not even mention First Past the Post or its failings. I'm sure you'll agree that this is a problem, and now is an opportunity to make ourselves heard. |
We are planning to dial up the pressure on Westminster through this inquiry. Over the next few weeks, we will be pulling together expert opinions, key research, individual testimonies, and robust statistics to submit official written evidence to the Committee, making it clear that the Representation of the People Bill has to go further: it has to include Proportional Representation. This is a real opportunity, but only if we move quickly. If Proportional Representation isn't in the evidence submitted to this inquiry, it becomes far easier for Westminster to ignore the issue entirely. Staff hours, collecting research, compiling case studies; it all takes time and resources for our small team. If you can support us now, you'll be helping us fight for a Representation of the People Bill that makes every vote matter. |

Very soon, we will be asking you to help us in submitting evidence to the Modernising Elections Inquiry. We need your stories, your experience, and your knowledge about how our voting system is failing all of us. Look out for that message. With hope and dedication, Reuben Make Votes Matter |
